Hi,

I have the following problems with watching content on my home theature setup. I don't have data on which happens the most often, but all three happen separately.

1. Projector loses the HDMI signal
2. The image suddenly has a TON of video noise.
3. The image turns green either with or without a ton of video noise.

At all times, the audio is fine. The problem almost always corrects itself by waiting it out. However, it can sometimes last for minutes. As you can imagine, it ruins the viewing experience.

I've had this problem since Day 1 of my home theater. I've gone thru 3 Sony VPL-HS51/HS60 projectors. I've gone from connecting my SA 8300HD DVR cable box directly to the projector to using a Key Digital HDMI switcher/scaler (http://www.digitalconnection.com/products/video/kdhdmi4x1.asp).

My two source components (cable box and PS3) send audio to my receiver via TOSlink digital audio (i.e. - not using HDMI to transport audio & my receiver (HK 635) does not accept HDMI.)

So with 3 different projectors and a few different source components, the problem has existed. Does this mean it is my cable?

I'm really hoping somone else has seen these problems before so I know I'm not the only one!!

Thanks!

Maybe you can check them spearately to see which machine has problem.

The machines with HDMI signal should have HDCP protection. It seems these problems are similar to the phenomenon caused by HDCP.

See my post in the projector forum. No, this isn't an HDCP issue, or else you would not get any picture ever. Picture dropouts and green/pixelated/blocky picture is a sure sign of HDMI signal integrity problems, usually due to long cable runs. How long is your HDMI cable and what is the wire gauge? Can you hook up a shorter (less than 10 foot) cable temporarily and see if the problem disappears?

Agree with DMilani. First though, did you buy your cables from "Joes best buys?" If you did, you might consider some decent cables. Green screens, purple screens, patterned dots, ect. are signal problems. In the early days, signal problems were as likely to be occuring inside components as in the cables, but not so much any more.

Even with a good cable, on a long run, too much capacitance can build up and cause these sorts of problems. HDCP has a cutoff of 400 picofarads of capacitance, which is pretty darn low. There are also rise and decay issues with the digital signal. There's a guy on the east coast that makes a solution, a thingie that bleeds off excess capacitance in HDMI cables and tries to sharpen up the rise and decay times of the signal, which really should be a square wave. I've gotten out of trouble by using it more than once. I don't know what his company name is off hand, but his name is Jeff Bostachio (spelling?) and I know you can purchase his products through Paul Collins and Associates in Orange, California. They are a distributor, so they will refer you to a dealer. This may fix things for you if a better cable doesn't work.

You could try one of these:

Cheap, and I've seen reports that it works well. You put it at the "end" of the line. Then use a short HDMI cable to your display.

I am having aproblem that I believe is a function of my long cable run, but my installer is chasing down hardware compatibility problems. The three relevant components are: JVC RS2 projector, Denon 5308ci receiver and Denon 2500BT Blu-Ray player. My HDMI 1.3a cable run is 45 ft. Signal was fine running just high definition Comcast programming from the 5308, but when the 2500 is connected by a short cable to the 5308, only audio, but no video to from the JVC. If my installer were to run a cable from the projector along the ceiling in a channel straight to the projector I think the cable run could get down to around 25-30ft instead of the 45dft required to snake it through the walls. Any sense of this being my most likely problem, because, or course, Denon and JVC are pointing fingers at each other, because no one wants to admit that these high end pieces of equipment have little flexibility in stallation and must be on short HDMI cable runs. I also here that the signal boosters for HDMI result in deteriorating performance. Sorry for the long post.
