View Full Version : LN46A650 and 1080p 360 issues?

Anyone have any idea why when I set my 360 to 1080p in the dashboard, the screen goes black when I change blades? It also happens in games.

In Lost Odyssey for example, during one of the first fights, on occasion the screen will go black and I get a mode not available type message.

I know this TV supports 1080p, it just seems to happen whenever something changes on the screen. (changing blades, going to cutscene, etc.)

Using component by the way. Any help is appreciated, sorry if this isn't the right section.

I have the 52" A650 and it does the same thing. I switched the res. to 1080i and it hasn't happened since. Could it be the cables are unable to handle 1080p?

My first 46a650 had no problems with 1080p over component. My replacement set now has this problem. Any suggestons?

Well, just asked Samsung support, and they say that 1080p isn't supported through component. Oh well.

Pretty much every game gets rendered natively at 720 resolution while a few titles can be rendered at 1080 resolution. Full 1080 resolution is just too much for the current console tech to handle. Sure a PC can handle it but consoles can't come close to the same level of quality at that resolution because they simply have less to work with when it comes to hardware accelerated graphics. You can do 1080 games on the current 360 but you can only do them with simple effects and a lot of game engine tweaking. I bet the successor to the 360 will render all games at 1080 resolution with a combined GPU/CPU architecture but we'll likely never see any version of the current Xbox that will allow native rendering across the board at 1080 without some kind of penalty. The console should only be set at 1080 resolution if you are going to view HD video. Otherwise leaving it at 720 will get you the best visual experience because you aren't scaling the video through the 360 which can give issues on titles like Saint's Row. However, your TV will scale the video to it's own native resolution and it's usually better to do that unless you find that the 360 scaling works better in your particular situation.

Yeah, you are right. 1080p isn't that big of a deal as far as console games for now. It's just the fact that I finally got a "real TV" and I want it. :) heh

But the games do look great as they are in 720p :)

1080p is just bragging rights for now in the realm of console gaming IMHO.

Hmm i have the LN52A650, i use HDMI so 1080p works. But i tried component just for the hell of it and that works as well, no problems.

how do you upgrade firmware ?

The 360 automatically prompts you to update the firmware when you are connected to the Internet and it detects that updates are available.

I think he means upgrading the fw on the TV not the XBox.

I've read a couple of people in the 650 owners thread say the new firmware does indeed fix this. Go there to learn more and upgrade.

A flash drive is a little solid state memory stick. You plug it into the USB port of your PC and can load data on and off the stick.

I own this one: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8145376

You plug it into the computer, throw the file on it, take it out and plug it into the TV, then load the firmware.

If you don't want to buy one, Samsung will send you a free one via mail (call support) but that will take a couple weeks or more.

I'm thinking of getting the Samsung 52" a750 when I move to my new apartment. I love my Sammy 4071, but since I'll have my own living room (instead of the shared one I have now), I'll need a bigger TV. I don't really like them too big, as the pixels are clearly visible on 58"+ TV's unless you sit really far away.

I guess I'm spoiled by the small pixels on my 40", making it better in PQ than bigger sizes.

I just hope the TV doesn't have really bad issues.

I have a 52 inch 650 and I sit around six feet away. I don't notice pixel structure at all.

You are right though. 1080p in 40 inches would be really sharp. I've never really checked out a 1080p screen that small but I'm sure it would be VERY nice to behold.

Game Mode is 60hz on the 120hz Samsung Tv's. I wouldn't advise it. Judder/motion blur galore.

My Sammy 1080p DLP accepts 1080p over component. Funny they aren't allowing that with the newer models.

An update, after the newer firmware it seems to work like a champ. :) ....right now anyway.

Thanks for the discussion guys.

It sounds like the problem was/is the TV losing sync with 1080p over component. They probably made some timing changes and thus the new firmware fixing the problem.

What's the firmware number for this? I just switched my 46a580 today for the 650. I'm also having this problem. But the 580 did not.

just set your 360 display settings to output in 1080i. It wont make any difference because there is no such thing as "1080p over component" for xbox. Everything plays in 1080i (or 720p) regardless.

You may need a TV exchange then. The Firmware update should fix it like everyone else.

720p is better than 1080i for Xbox 360. Since all games, save a couple of exceptions, are rendered at no higher than 720p, that's the right setting to use. At 1080i you'll lose some resolution, especially when there's a lot of motion on the screen. 1080p, if you can get it to work, is also a good choice.

My LN46A650 looks noticeably better when I set the xbox to 1080p than any other setting. I do have my xbox output set to "expanded".

That's because your a650 is 1080p native. Although the majority of games aren't 1080p, the 360 upscales them to that. A true 720p signal on a 1080p (press info, and it should say 1280x720p) TV comes out a little soft. That's the problem with the majority of ps3 games on a 1080p set. The ps3 doesn't upscales most of it's games, letting the TV do the work. It's more desirable to have the source upscale, not the TV.

Expanded doesn't do anything for that. I can get my Intermediate option to look just as good as Expanded.
