Need Help. My wife's parents have a Mits 2006 model rptv. They just purchased a phillips 5992 dvd player. I was trying to make sure the settings were correct for hdmi. Their tv does not support 1080p but the DVD player is now set to 1080p and will not go back to 1080i. I have tried the RESET under the menu options. No joy. I have connected a standard video cable while the hdmi cable is plugged in and this doesn't work either. The screen flickers and It wont let me change the settings. At this point I would like to just set this back to factory defaults if it will let me. I thought the menu option would do that but it seems not to. If I try to change the hdmi settings they are grey'd out most of the time.

The tv has an mlink option and it was working with this link. Now however when I change the input to the dvd player I just get a blue screen.

What can I do to get this issue resolved? I can't find any firmware to try and reflash the bios... The tv see's the dvd player but the player thinks the tv is 1080p and doesn't work.

Thanks for your assistance.

Steven

Where did they get that player? There are no indications that the 5992 has been released.

Try the following from page 44 in the owners manual

It provides the picture settings to enhance the appearance and picture quality for disc playback. This feature is only applicable if you have connected this unit to a HDMI-compatible TV/device.
{ Resolution } – Select a suitable video resolution that is compatible with your TV display capability.
{ Auto }
It detects and selects the best supported video resolution automatically.
{ 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p }
Manually select a video resolution. ‘p’ for progressive and ‘i’ for interlaced.
Note:
– If the selected resolution is not supported by your HDMI/DVI TV, a black screen will appear. In this case, wait for 5 seconds for auto recovery or use the composite (yellow) video cable to connect this unit and your TV. Turn on your TV to the correct input channel for the composite video and adjust the resolution setting to 480p/576p.

Ah, yeah, I think those are different models. The 90 model doesnt do video playback by usb, and the 92 model does. Unfortunately, no one seems to have the 92 model in yet.

Anyways, you should be able to navigate from the setup menu to the video setup menu, to the HDMI menu, where you can choose the resolution.

Basically you need to go to the menu where you make the change on resolution but, you can't see it. What I would suggest is finding somebody on this site that has this model and essentially give you a detailed example of how to get to that setting change in the menu. Almost like giving instructions to a blind person.

Someone in another thread just directed me to videohelp.com, and it looks like it does video over USB without a hitch. Yes, my exact post in that thread previously was "that's the one that's not supposed to have USB 2.0", but it apparently does and works great!! ANyone have a clue if there will be a 5992, or is it a European only model, etc?

I just did a side by side comparison of the 5990 and 5992 on the Philips website. According to them, the 5992 has USB2, but the 5990 only has the USB1.1 - they call it USB Direct.

The 5992 can play WMV files. The 5990 cannot.

That's about the only differences I can see.

Yep, agreed 100%, but go to videohelp.com, search 5990, and you'll see a "first impressions" thread that talks about the 5990 having usb 2.0 and playing wmv. If nothing else they talk about playing vob files from a usb, and that is not happening off a 1.1. Stutter like crazy.

The 5990 and the 5992 are identical except for color (black versus silver). Someone on another forum called Philips and was told that.
