haven't seen any reviews or news on this camcorder. anyone know how it is in terms of value/image quality. HMX10 was decent, but this is supposed to be a new full hd model on par with the panasonic sd9. looking to pick this one up as a father's day gift, so any and all input would be appreciated.

I've had this camcorder for a few days now and I can say that I am watching (in QuickTime) and editing these files (in iMove / Final Cut) in mere seconds of slapping the card in a reader

IT's not as feature rich as the Canon's(HF10) or Sony's (SR-11), butat least you can watch and edit the .mp4 files without having a supercomputer transcoding the files into something else first

That's exactly why I'm about to pull the trigger on this model, instead of either Canon. Joining, cutting, deleting, editing clips in camera, as well as watching clips straight off the camera will be excellent.

well, today I went back to where I bought te Samsung with 8gbSDHC in hand
took some clips with the Canon hf100 and went back home to see what I could do with the files

the AVCHD file in the Canon is buried a few levels in the folder the Canon created on my card .. the .mts file resides in the STREAM subfolder

well, you can't natively see the .mts file using Finder's 'preview' like you can the .mp4 files from the Samsung, but I had no problem getting iMovie to see the card (and it's contents)

I realize it's a small minor step to view the .mts (using VLC-nightly build), but it sure is convenient and more wife friendly to view the files in the Finder window for preview and watch them instantly in QuickTime ..... the quality of viewing the .mts files from the Canon hf100 is smooth ,but is plagued with artifacting and trailing

I really like the simplicity and speed of using the Samsung, but prefer the more advanced functions of the Canon .... then I have points to give to the Sony sr-11/12 for the viewfinder, but I then take it away for use of strictly MS Pro Duo ... the Samsung gets a plus 2 for usage of an INTERNAL FLASH / SDHC (up to 32gb) / and MMC cards, which we have for our Canon DSLR

I have about 7 more days before I have to decide to keep the Sammy or exchange it for the Canon or the Sony

Yeah, this is a hard decision. I was able to play the MTS files on my Mac side and PC side of my MBP, and just now tested the Samsung and Canon files on my PS3. Canon has the lead in video quality, just not the ease of the Samsung on-camera features and playback. Whoever has the best deal by Friday wins, I guess...

Does it skip and lose frames playing within the camcorder? If not, than I suspect your computer hardware/software is not up to par. You must have a fast cpu, preferably dual core or a video card that can accelerate mpeg4 AVC (newer ATI/Nvidia cards). If you have one of those and still find it choppy, try other players other than quicktime. Newest versions of VLC and MPC-HC are free to use.
