When is it overkill when you decorate your HT.?

I havent seen anyone yet who has a seperate building from their house as a HT with a Marquee and a ticket booth now THAT would definately be overkill!

This guy's video arcade is in a separate bldg. I think he has a theater too.

I may be forced to move and I am thinking of a separate building now for the new theater.

My dream theater would have a two person balcony. I think I could make that happen in a 12x16 tall barn pre fab kit shed. :)

Really overkill considering he can't find anyone to watch a movie with because they can't stop laughing

I've seen this theater online but I'd be afraid I'd step on something if I need to get up (to go to the bathroom, to get some popcorn, etc.)

Check out the two Theo Kalomirakis books on home theaters he's installed. They are absolutely INSANE!

Mine is in what was a separate building, until the town made us put on a breezeway in order to keep using the room. So it is in fact about 25 feet from the main house down a long sloping hall which is where my Marquee is. I still need to add some big golden gates at the head of the hall. But since I have to move and leave my theater sitting there for a few years I guess it will wait till I return. [Assuming I live that long]
I personally don't think one can go Over the Top!

Now if you installed a ticket booth that would be overkill! :p :D

And fun too. ;)

Did somebody turn you in or something? That seems dumb.

I don't think there is such a thing as over the top.
Sure certain theaters might not set well with the tastes of some, but if that is what you want... then by all means go for it.
I am wrapping up my home made candy counter as I type this and I know some think I am crazy for adding such a piece. But there are just some things that I have always wanted to compliment my dedicated theater when I built one. A candy counter is one and a ticket window and marquee are the other two pieces.

"Theater room" and "overkill" are 2 words that simply do not belong together....

Merely having a dedicated HT is excessive and overkill. That being said, everything else is personal preference. Go for it.

Overkill is necessary to increase the coolness factor. :)

May as well post this....

We are building an outbuilding/barn/playhouse/whatever you wish to call it.
The main room will be a 34x 45 foot gymnasium with 20 foot ceilings. Overlooking this gym will be a loft 20x30 feet in size. 16 feet of the loft will be open to below so we can watch the kids at play. Our theater is going up in the loft. Light control is not going to be an issue. I figure some of the audiophiles may have a problem with this set up but I think it will be fine. We will have a curtain across the open area when the theater is in use. The building is framed. Siding is going on as we speak. And my constant monitoring/studying of the AVS forums continues.

I think that if you have a passion,as in any hobby ,to outsiders, it is overkill. I have a friend who is into high power rocketry. We talk all the time and I've been to a few of the launches and competitions. It really is awesome and the things they build are very very impressive. What they make happen most of us would consider over the top. He built a scale model of a surface to air missle and spent months looking for screws that would be exact scale so he could get a few more points from the scale judges.

This is just an example but I think one can get the point. Except for my home theater nut buddies (all of whom I've met on the internet) I don't personally know anyone who would want my theater or even something like it.

Oh Art... you are far to modest... :D
I don't know anyone who WOULDN'T want a theater on the level of yours.

I think the key point is, most people would love a dedicated room in their home. But most people are not willing to spend the money, or jump through the necessary hoops to achieve such a space.

Dude everyone wants your theater! They might not want to pay that much for it though. :D

Yeah it is funny how people react to things. Several examples.

One pilot friend in GA made a huge deal about my 1st dedicated HT. He acted like I was out of my mind crazy etc. Every time I was around him he would bring it up and go on and on about it.The same dude has a 100K+ boat parked in his driveway that he uses one weekend a year. I don't begrudge the boat, but it is funny how he doesn't even think about that, but flips out about a dedicated HT. These days, dedicated HTs are much more common so he is probably working on his own in his basement right now. :D

Another funny example was several years ago, I bought a very old but nice Miata for about $3200.00. I showed up at a friends house to help him with his mega backyard pool project. It was the definition of excess. When I showed up with the car, he went on and on about my wild extravant life. I don't deny me excesses, but I think it is funny that many people have some hobby or passion, but see anything everybody else does as excessive. Kinda funny.

I love to see everybodies overkill!!! Big projects are way cool.

umm yeah, that's about what I would call an over the top setup. Sick as hell, don't get me wrong and that's their passion, but wow

gotta love the blacklight carpet! I almost did that in my rec room, but the UV that comes out of the Blacklight fixtures is known to fade the artwork on my pinballs.
