View Full Version : Hi Def Apple Trailer's better then Blue Ray?
Alan Gouger 05-13-08, 10:01 AM To my eye I was surprised to see Hi DefApple Trailers (http://www.apple.com/trailers/) surpasses Blue Ray. Take a look at some of the HD content. 720p looked the best on my laptop.
Ck out Speed Racer (http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/speedracer/hd/) no contour bug at all in any of these, No EE, No pixelization and the colors looks beyond consumer color.
Probably the closest thing to a D Cinema tease we will see, at least short term.
I wish Blue ray looked as good as these.
coldmachine 05-13-08, 10:38 AM The Apple trailers seem to be very well done. The HD movies on Apple TV arent a patch on HDM but those ones you linked to may be different.
For their PQ they d/l really fast. I wonder if theres some cool compression going on.
Speed Racer Looks like a crap film but truly insane demo material.
I wonder what that would look like with a full DCI gamut? It would probably melt your scrotum.
Alan Gouger 05-13-08, 10:46 AM If these trailers are as bug free as they appear ( clearly superior to BD ) maybe there is hope after all for quality HD downloads:)

Ive just looked at the 1080p version................WOW.
I'll throw that on a PJ when I get time.
Cant wait till we get super quality D/Ls. A high end VUDU with a great UI and a massive HD catalog would be insane.
Arent K talking about heading that way?
markrubin 05-13-08, 10:56 AM wife and I watched an HD movie (PS I Love you) from AppleTV over the weekend:
I was amazed at how fast it downloaded and the PQ looked quite good (not ready to say better than BD just yet though)

Mark how did the movie differ to the apple trailers which look superior to BD regarding typical artifacts. What display did you watch this on. Very interesting, Thanks!!

Youre correct, the AppleTV movies are NOT at BD level, but those trailers Alan linked to are a different beastie.
Ive noticed before that some of the Apple TV HD trailers looked freakily clean, especially considering how quickly they d/l, which means high compression. I'd like to see some info on that.

If you dont you may end up sitting in a pool of "Big Daddy Gouger's Organic Hot Nacho Sauce":)
I think stuff like this speaks to the fact that we still have a lot to get out of 2k before we worry about anything else.
Andreas 05-13-08, 12:11 PM These clips can be truely amazing. One reason why I keep a DVI HTPC in my setup....

That's some impressive color.:D I saw the speed racer trailer at a DLP cinema and I could feel them getting hot though.

I'd like to see some info on that.I think trailers get noise reduction and get the colors boosted to try to give wow factor in a lot of cases. Kind of like how companies try to boost the volume on commercials. I remember the trailer for Click looked significantly different than the BD. I didn't personally like the look of the BD much, but the trailer looked like it had been noise reduced and I believe the colors had been boosted.

Alan Gouger 05-14-08, 10:32 AM Darin if you get a chance to watch some of these on the big screen through a projector compare many of the studio intros to the same intros on Blue ray and you will see a big improvement in the posturization and banding during the fade ins/outs. No side effect from NR.

This is what i have been saying for a while. Once you get past all of Peter's hyperbole, you see that the proj we deal with has plenty of room to grow. and it is no secret that BD is not as good as it can be.
4K source material in any quantity other than a few downloads is a pipe dream for at least 20 years. The broadcasters and the studios (and eventually the theatres) need to recoup the billions they have spent so far before anybody even thinks about jumping to something new. Remember that it took 57 years (thus far and still counting) to proclaim HS as being the dominant format. So the next great step is a long way off.
But the big point is to remember that what we see today has no bearing on what we will see over the years with HD content and HD Displays.

Not a BD versus Apple trailer issue. It's a source issue. There is no Speed Racer BD. Once there is if it looks 'worse' than the trailer they made the master 'worse'. If anything BD can outperform the trailers since the bit rate is usually higher and multi pass encoding is used with hand tuning. BD with worse compression than trailers are very unlikely. Someone would have screwed up big time. Trailers using different masters on the other hand is apparently quite normal.
Speed Racer better look excellent since it was shot all HD with the latest Sony camera.

Im guessing this is the case. The biggest difference I am seeing is
lack of banding, color posturization during fade in/outs. That is where these trailers have BD beat. BD must be going through several additional stages resulting in errors some where along the line. Possibly from the use of different gamma.

Usually Bruckheimer uses deep blacks. On Apple HD trailers of "national treasure" I also had the feeling the masters used where from before processing. They looked unusally bright and transparent.

Another good comparison is Narnia. The opening logo on BD has typical banding/posturization compared to the Apple trailer (http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/thechroniclesofnarniaprincecaspian/hd/) which is much cleaner and transparent during the fades. If anyone gets a chance to compare there is a big difference.
