The oppo will perform better. The Panasonic is a great Blu ray player but, an average upscaler for DVDs.

If you want the ultimate from your standard dvd's the new oppo DV983H will make them look amazing!

What I'm doing is buying a Oppo 980 or 981 now and a bluray player in next year or two, hopefully the prices will come down by then.

The few blu ray players I have make me gag when it comes to SD DVD play back ability. The best one I have is the Samsung 1400 but I would not call it great. The Sony S300 has absolutely no motion processing and most of the time you just get a bunch of different colored blocks on the screen. At least the 1400 has motion processing.

If you have a sizable DVD collection and a very good display going with an Oppo 983 might end up being a worthy investment for you.

With a sizable collection of SD DVDs, I would most definitely go with an Oppo. Probably the DV981HD or DV983H, depending on your display size. Blu-Ray players upconvert SD DVDs as a secondary function, while Oppo players are dedicated to upconverting. If you compare the two side by side, you should see a noticable difference.

I've not really been following the blu-ray player news, but is there potential for a player to be released within the year that has Oppo-quality upconverting? ...or did we lose that combination bliss when HDDVD was killed off?

I have an inexpensive Philips 3960 and keep debating trading up for an Oppo 980 (really difficult to justify the Oppo price not knowing the visual difference), but ultimately I'd really prefer to just have a single player that's good at both BD & DVD.

The majority of Blu-Ray players primary concentrate on Blu-Ray performance not SD upconversion which takes a secondary role in their respective designs. While you could see a future BR player equaling the Oppo 980H, most here recognize that getting a Oppo 983H deinterlacing/scaling SD quality would cost a lot in a Blu-Ray player. Currently most feel its better to get what's best for you in two players (SD + BR) rather then wait for that one great player. But you know anything is possible, just how long do you want to wait? :)

That's pretty much what I figured. I suppose I'll need to figure out where to put a separate box when the times comes to move to Blu-Ray, heh.
