You have to contact them and ask. What display are you using? I already have a Phillips upconverting player that i will use with an older HDTV. I am on the market for a nice one for the new TV. Joe Dwarf 05-14-08, 11:39 AM What's your budget? The universal opinion here seems to be that each Oppo is the best at it's price point, but if your budget is less than $170 you'll probably have to do some thread digging. FWIW I recently got the 981 and am very happy with how it looks on a 46" Sharp LCD. After quite a bit of reading I decided the 983 was overkill for my application. longhaul747 05-14-08, 11:50 AM I will be using a Samsung LN52A550. SD picture quality seems very good with the two. Vivid colors, crisp detail and clean picture. For a $50 player the Philips does very good. I am waiting on a Oppo 983 for my 67" Samsung DLP set but for the smaller sets in the house I will just use a cheap but good upconverting player. If you want the best of the best and have the spare change the Oppo 983 will do you good. rohitgupta22 05-14-08, 02:07 PM i just bought Sony NS700H UpScaling DVD player for my LN52A550, after reading reviews on amazon, but very disappointed. Could not watch even for 20 mins. My HD Channels looks much better than that. May Blue Ray is the right option. wmcclain 05-14-08, 02:16 PM i just bought Sony NS700H UpScaling DVD player for my LN52A550, after reading reviews on amazon, but very disappointed. It can't compete with a good high definition source. A dvd has 720x480 pixels (NTSC). A 720p HD signal has 1280x720, and 1080i/p has 1920x1080. -Bill JohnAV 05-14-08, 02:17 PM i just bought Sony NS700H UpScaling DVD player for my LN52A550, after reading reviews on amazon, but very disappointed. The $169 Oppo 980H is almost free of video artifacts at 1080P. (step up from NS700H) Joe Dwarf 05-14-08, 03:01 PM My 981 looks better in some ways than some of the broadcast HD channels (FOX, I'm looking at you). It's certainly very watchable. I think you must have a setup problem, if the Sony is a competent player. rohitgupta22 05-15-08, 01:41 PM Make sure you are using HDMI connection to your Samsung display and also using movie mode (DCDi disabled).
