I won't bother the forum with a pile of questions, I'm just looking for some links so I can sit down and start reading about the various technologies in current FP displays. I'm looking into buying an HDTV (37" or so, for a small apartment).

I've been out of the tech scene for a few years now so I don't really know what the current hardware is... but the main thing is that I want some links with real hardcore details about the tech itself.

I DON'T want a buyer's guide... I want the really hardcore tech details about what's going on inside these TV's... I really don't like buying stuff like this without knowing what's under the hood, so to speak (too me months to research and buy a relatively cheap camera).

720p, 1080p, resolutions... I know all those basics, but how is scaling handled? How does a 720p set scale a 1080p source (or possibly, how does a 1080p device scale down to a 720p signal)? How do HDTV's in general scale SD content? There's still a lot of debate between Plasma and LCD, but how are they different (at all levels)? Zooming, scaling, black bars, grey bars... The list goes on an on.

So... Where should I start reading? I'm not interested in any sets in particular, I want the really nitty gritty fundamentals first, then I will start looking at each set's options and differences.

Oh, and FYI, I live in Japan (I'm Canadian though)... It's REALLY hard to pick an HDTV here. The local electronics store (in Osaka) is 7 stories high... The HDTV section is about the size of half an entire Costco with probably a 100-150 different models. It's pretty nuts...
