Its going to be a busy month !
Cheers,
desmond212 05-15-08, 03:37 PM Patton is supposed to be a reference quality disc that I am really looking forward to.
I'm definitely looking forward to the reviews on the old war movies (Patton, Battle of Britain, and A Bridge Too Far) but some of the newer titles should be interesting as well.
So when will we star seeing these reviews Mr. Potts? ;)

Greetings,
They should begin showing up in the next week or so. I try to get them done as I receive them.
Cheers,
Sounds great Ralph... I was just teasing anyway. I know you get them done as quickly as you can.
I suspect Patton will fly off the shelves as a Father's Day gift. Great timing.
I will be highly anticipating the review for several of those titles Ralph (especially Patton). Thanks for your time and effort, I enjoy your reviews.

Believe it or not I have never seen Patton. I am looking forward to seeing it for the first time.

Vern Dias 05-16-08, 11:48 AM Let's just hope that they put the subtitles for "The Longest Day" where they belong!!! (That would be in the 2.40:1 image area as seen in the theater when film was projected, not in the black bar below the image). That way, those of us with CIH projection systems can actually enjoy the film without compromising image size....

I've got all three of the WW II movies on SD DVD's, so I'll be curious to know how the BluRay discs compare to the SD DVD's. Ralph, is there any way for you to make this comparison during your review?

Tom Monahan 05-16-08, 11:58 AM Hi Ralph,
Off topic here but will you be reviewing The Air I Breathe with Kevin Bacon this month?
Thanks,
Tom

Cheers,
George C. Scott portrayed Gen. Patton so well, you'll think you're watching a documentary! Masterful performance by the late Mr. Scott.

Tom, it looks like that one is from an independent studio and is only available in SD currently. I won't be covering it at this time. Sorry.

desmond212 05-16-08, 01:46 PM Ralph,
I am really jealous right now.
cnikirk 05-16-08, 02:51 PM Ralph,
Will you be reviewing the Dirty Harry Collection?
Chad
In the review for The Longest Day, I'd be interested in a comparison to the 2 DVD versions that have been out. While the 2nd release was anamorphic, which allowed the subtitles to be read when the movie was in the correct aspect ratio, the image seemed noticeably softer than the non-anamorphic version. It was one of the first two DVDs I bought, so if the Blu-ray is a big improvement I will probably triple dip on it.
horrorfan2112 05-16-08, 04:11 PM Well there are plenty on that list that are must buys for me Ralph and I can't wait to see signs on BD. Looking forward to your impressions regarding the soundtrack. Anyway so far it looks to me like you are doing a wonderful job here!

Greetings,
I don't currently cover Blu-ray releases from Warner but may in the future.

Having not seen this release on DVD I won't be able to provide an opinion on either previous version versus the Blu-ray Disc. Hopefully the quality will be good enough that it won't require it.:)

:D Eagerly awaiting the write up! :D
I'm so excited about the WWII movies, that I'm tempted to buy my dad a blu-ray player for father's day... except he doesn't have an HDTV (only ED).
June's the best month in quite a while for quality catalog releases. Maybe the best month yet.
Ralph, one notable absence from your review list is Sony's Persepolis which is due towards the end of the month. This movie is radically different than any other animation on Blu-ray to date. If you get the opportunity, I'd highly recommend giving it a look.

Crimson King 05-18-08, 05:06 PM Good to see the initial Patton impressions are good. I actually thought the DVD looked pretty good, so this is one I definitely can't wait to get.

No problem Ralph. Maybe someone else will buy the BluRay disc and post a comparison somewhere.
Apart from your postings, do you recommend any other sites that post reviews of BluRay discs? I'm trying to be choosy in deciding which BluRay disc to buy, and just wondered whether you had any tips for a BluRay newbie. For example, I remember reading somewhere that there was a problem with one of the BluRay discs in the "Die Hard" collection, but I did not pay much attention to it at the time because I had not chosen sides in the HD/BluRay format war, and now I cannot remember where I saw the review! So I've been holding off buying the "Die Hard" collection until I figure this out!
Thanks for your help.

Ralph, I read your intro tread about these reviews as well and was curious as to why Warner and Universal are exempt from your coverage. This just seems odd to me as particularly, Warners has a major presence in the video arena and was in part responsible for the final (THANKS at last!) end to the hideous format war.

Greetings,
Its not that they are exempt. I didn't cover Warner prior to coming here to review and have never been set up with them. The other studios that I cover have kept me plenty busy. I have reached out for them but haven not heard back yet.
Thanks.
Chazcdc54 06-11-08, 07:19 PM Excuse my ignorance here as I'm not familiar with the process from the inside. Obviously, you must work with "review" copies and such. From what you say Warner Bros and Universal have yet to establish agreements with you. I hope they do sometime soon as I've grown to appreciate another voice in reviewing these titles. Keep it up and we'll all keep reading! :)
