Hi everbody. My wife just surprised me with a Denon AVR-3808CI and a PS3. I hooked it up (correctly, I think), but I'm having some problems.

I'm using HMDI for my TV to AVR and AVR to Cable/DVR. My other equipment is: Pioneer 6070HD, Definitive Technologies speakers (BP20 fronts, Celsius rears and C/L/R/ 1000 center), Velodyne HGS10 sub and Motorola DCT 3416 DVR (Time Warner cable).

Problems I'm having:

1. When I shut off the TV, the audio goes away for 2-3 seconds. Not sure why, given that the audio comes through the AVR.

2. Audio disappears for a 1-2 seconds when un-pause from DVR.

3. Video flashes black 2 or 3 times (and audio goes out, too) when I switch from DVD (or any other use) over to TV/Cable AND every time I turn on the TV. Not good at all.

Someone on the Denon thread suggested that at least #1 is an HDMI problem. I hate to think that I "upgraded" to more problems when my system worked perfectly fine without this stuff. Any and all suggestions are appreciated on how I can fix these things. Thanks very much!

Hi what is your display?. Also I have heard of this problem before, I will see if I can digg the info up for you, it is obviously something to do with the Display or Denon AVR, I just cant recall which....

I experience all of those fun hdmi resyncs too, it's just something I have come to live with. Actually, I don't have problem #2 though. Different receiver (Yamaha 663), but I have that same DVR.

The #3 flashing video resync business is tremendously annoying, I blame that on the DVR though; the TV (Philips something7422) doesn't 'double resync' with other sources (DVD, HTPC, etc).

Example for #1, if you're listening to a CD with the DVD player and turn off the TV, the HDMI connection needs to resync to make sure you're not trying something shady, that cuts the audio out during the process. The AVR is part of the HDMI/HDCP chain that ends at the TV, so the whole chain is reshuffled when the TV is turned off.

As far as I'm aware though, those annoyances are the norm. If they're not I'd also really like to know what I need to do to rid myself of them.

I have a similar problem with my Onkyo 805 receiver when viewing Dolby Digital material from a DirecTV DVR, either with HDMI or an optical audio connection. It apparently takes a second or two for the receiver to determine what the digital audio format is (which does seem an excessive amount of time) after a pause in the signal. I noticed that the Onkyo display that shows the decode format (in this case, Dolby Digital) goes blank for the time that the sound is off. (Curiously, for some reason the delay is shorter now than it used to be. Don't know why.) My understanding is that, if it selects the wrong format for decoding, you could get a blast of noise from the speakers, which is not good for either your ears or the speakers, so it blanks the sound until it determines the proper format.

Cinema mad, my display is the Pioneer 6070HD. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks to you, too, imeridian and crutschow.

Yes, this is something you are going to have to live with. Overall, hdmi is going to give you sound formats from your ps3 that you can not get with fiberoptic tos link or digital coax. So, yes leave it HDMI and learn to live with the quirks of hdmi. Also, do a firmware upgrade, this will aleviate one of your issues.

JKeith, thank you for your reply. Which issue is a firmware issue?
