Has anyone had a dirty disc error with GTA IV?

I'm on my second copy of GTA IV, which has never left my tray since I got it. After about 15-20 hours of gameplay, started getting a dirty disc error. I examined the disc and there are scratches (going in a circular motion) across the disc, the same as I noticed on my first copy. The first copy might have been my own cause and I was not certain, so I ended up getting another copy which entered my console perfect, and hasn't left the tray until I received the error.

My original instinct was that it was my 360 dvd drive that might be doing the scratching, but none of my other discs have the circular scratches (and don't get dirty disc errors).

Then I was thinking it could be poor quality media that Take Two used to press the disc in mass quanties, and it's possible that it's just the GTA IV disc, not the 360 doing the scratching.

Did anyone else have a similar experience with either GTA IV, the 360, or another title?

Do publishers actually have media choices? I have no idea, but always imagined that MS controlled the actual media used in production.

Your 360 is scratching discs. Get it repaired, get a new one, or find a scratch prevention guide online that will show you how to open up the drive to fix that problem.

Oh, and poor media isn't going to magically scratch itself. :) If the disc was so warped that it was the cause of the problem, it wouldn't even read in the first place as the pits on the disc would be very out of focus.

I am on my 3rd or 4th COD4 disc, had to send the 360 in to get the disc drive replaced, do it now before you kill more disks.

odd, because GTA4 is the only disc mine has problems with too.... luckily it's not scratching my GTA, it just takes about 30 mins of ejecting, rebooting, etc, before it finally doesnt say "unplayable disc"

The beginning of the end, COD4 was the same way give it about another month or two

i will not ever be on anything OTHER than my first 360. which is a launch console, and served 300-500 hours in the desert in iraq.

i've already fixed my RROD, and the DVD drive is next.

you'd have to be an idiot to send your system back to MS.

You must be an idiot. The whole world sent it back. Too much Iraq rotted your brains!!

i'm an idiot because i fixed it myself and you sent yours back 3 times? waited what, 2, 3 weeks each time? and worry every day about yours RROD again?

my console hasn't even froze once in over a year, with almost 400 hours spent on COD4 alone.

maybe you should look into BGA re-balling and the X-clamp removal.

what does this have to do with this thread anyway.... the point is that GTA4 was obviously printed on sub-par media, and the issue needs to be addressed by R*, do a google search, there are quite a few people with similar problems.

It the console and certain games make it worse. Any game that uses streaming will read from the disc non-stop. UE3 games and GTA4 are examples. I had to use my extended warranty on my old pro it gave me disc read errors.

yes, but i've had ZERO DDE's, my problem is that the xbox sees the disc as unplayable 9 times out of 10... when it finally sees it as playable, it plays fine for as long as i want to play it.

First of all, thanks everyone for the responses. A friend of mine ran the disc through one of the scratch repair machines and it did a decent job making my disc playable enough, but after 2-3 hours, I've noticed more scratching... I'm thinking I should start taking photographs for evidence  Worst case scenario I'd like to try to repair the DVD-ROM drive myself. Is there any particular model drive I need to purchase?

What bothers me is that my Xbox 360 has already been repaired for RROD in April 2007 (purchased new March 07). And is now out of warranty, the one year warranty is starting from March 07 and they did not renew it when I received my repaired console. I'd wish Microsoft would repair it for me, but the 3 year warranty I've heard about was only RROD, not other more severe defects such as a drive that is ruining my games...

Dont worry it will soon be the RROD. This is just the start.
