View Full Version : Problems with my HR21-100 and an easy question

I am now on my 2nd HR21-100 receiver. The first one kept locking up one of the sattelite feeds (making it paused indefinitely or turning the screen gray with no sound), also the audio would skip and stutter and there were other minor issues. Unplugging the receiver and plugging it back in always fixed these issues.

So after a year of this I returned it and got a new HR21-100 from D*. My new HD DVR is less than 3 weeks old and now it is locking up. I can watch TV fine all night, but then I'll come back in the morning and the whole unit will be locked up. This has happened twice in the past 3 weeks. My previous HR21-100 was having issues a few times per week.

Is the issue I'm experiencing normal? Are others with the HR21-100 also having strange problems with their unit?

Are there fixes available for this?

OK, now for the easy question. In the HR21-100 set-up for audio I can select Dolby Digital on or off. I have an Onkyo 705 receiver. Should I set the HR21-100 DD to off? Will the reciever decode the PCM content, or do I need the HR21-100 to have DD on for the Onkyo 705 to decode the sound properly?

Thanks!

Some people are having lockups with the latest release of software, I expect this will be fixed in the next release.
Since the 705 has a Dolby Digital decoder, set the HR21 to output Dolby and set the 705 input to "auto detect" (or some similar setting). Connect the HR21 and the 705 using an optical audio cable.
Or you can connect the HR21 to the 705 using HDMI. Some upconverting receivers have HDMI compatibility issues with some DirecTV/dish/cable boxes but I am not sure if people have reported any issues with the 705/HR21 combination.

Thanks. I'm not sure how to set the 705 to auto detect but I've got DD turned on on the D* box. I know sometimes it says Dolby D and sometimes it says THX Nueral 5.1 on the Onkyo display :dunno:

I'll RTFM and figure out how to auto detect with the 705. :) Maybe that's what PCM means? :dunno:
