steverobertson 05-20-08, 08:45 AM Looking forward to this series and think it will go the full 7 at least I hope it does.
The Cup was here yesterday, to bad I didn't know about it before hand. It was at a charity golf tournament for Hockey Fights Cancer before going to the Versus studio, which is just a couple of miles from my house. My local paper has a picture of it at the golf tournament on the front page today.

I was at the Hockey Hall of Fame a few years ago and just missed the cup by one day as it was being shipped somewhere but did see the replica.

LETS GO PENS!

Now both the Pistons and Red Wings have home games on Saturday and Monday night. I'm sure some people in Detroit aren't too happy about that.
Let me come out and say it now for the Wings fans so we can get it out of the way from the beginning, the Refs want the Pens to win and the Pens play dirty. There. So if the Pens do win this series ( who I am now rooting for) we already know the reason why(see above) and it most certainly will have nothing to do with their hockey abilities.
Thanks for listening!

I am sure they are not very happy but they should consider themselves lucky to have 2 teams still playing.

Let me get this out of the way, piss off.
DocCasualty 05-20-08, 01:42 PM The Cup comes back to Detroit this year. It will be a 6-7 game series. Skill will be pretty evenly matched but Detroit will hold a decided edge in face-off wins, allowing them more puck possession, which is their game. PP and PK again, pretty even. Detroits' physical presence will hold a slight edge for them on the PK. I don't care how the refs call it, either "new" or "old" NHL, just be consistent!

I am sure by that statement you think Dallas, Anaheim, Philly, Ottawa, Calgary, Colorado and more are clean teams. I know that what you said is your ERRONEOUS opinion and lack of true knowledge of the sport of hockey, since it is well known throught the NHL by teams, management, fans and more that the Pens are not even close to dirty.
Show me something that says different, if not and you are serious you have zero credibility with respect to making comments about hockey, the NHL and teams.

It would still apply to his previous posts. :D
Willie_Tee 05-20-08, 04:30 PM Well Detroit, you whipped my Dallas Stars fair 'n square. The better team won. So congratulations and Good Luck to the Red Wings in the finals...
jdailey23 05-20-08, 04:37 PM Know why the Detroit fan said that??? He knows they are going to get their butt kicked, this way it wont be so bad.
At least Detroit viewers have the advantage of watching the games on the CBC, rather than Versus.

Unfortunately, unless you have Canadian DBS, Versus is the only HD option.

Why stop there Hugh? Just name the rest of the teams in the NHL and your covered. And that Dallas sure played dirty in that series and deserved to lose because of it, didn't they.
Hugh you better stick to figure skating because that is the sport you keep describing, not the NHL. :D

Touch a sore spot did I? Just going by some posting history in the previous threads, thats all! ;)

Meanwhile I play ice hockey! Funny how the "figure skating" teams and not the hacks are in the cup. :p
Hey don't take my word for it. As I said before, read the blogs, listen to commentators and announcers, players and fans. People know who the hack teams are. And most important, yes I like faster European style hockey than our American style. Which team was the best this year by far? The dominantly European Wings or the hack American Ducks. The new rules favor quality over bullying. YES!!
I mentioned 7 teams. Lat time I checked there were 30 in the NHL. I named the top well known hack teams.
Touch a sore spot did I? Just going by some posting history in the previous threads, thats all! ;)
No sore spot, i'm just telling you to piss off before you bring this thread into the shitter like you did to the conference finals thread. You have seemingly no knowledge of hockey and all you do is post childish and antagonist garbage every time you show up. So please, piss off.

Now it is an American style of hockey that is hack, really! What happen to the Canadian style? Was that not the original hack as you desribe, did you watch the NHL in the 60's, 70's & early 80's? Because thats when hockey was all about fighting & brawling with mostly Canadian rosters, not like it is today.
American style can be more defined as NCAA hockey, again where is this form of hack as you state because I watch a lot of it and don't see what you refer too.
Did you root for the Soviet Union over the USA at Lake Placid in 1980 as well because you liked their style of hockey better?
I played Ice Hockey too when I was younger, big deal!

Look in the mirror! I didn't know you can only be a Red Wing's fan to post in these threads. But thanks for trying to make the rules.

Canada is America. I still play hockey. The Soviets were 10 months out of the year in Siberia away from their families, so of course they won since they were robotic machines with threats to them or their families. I wanted the US.
You are admitting exactly what I am trying to point out. You are saying you don't see the hack style, clutch and grab and dirty hockey by Anaheim for example? If you don't see it then you again you have admittedly proved my point.
Your analogies are poor at best and I agree with Droid. It seems you are the only one being a bitter pill in this thread. What does it do for you? Why take this attitude and stance? And don't give me that, "it is my opinion, I am entitled to it" crap, because that doesn't legitimize or justify being beligerent. If it continues, I would just as soon see this thread closed, so you don't have a venue to seemingly troll.
I have nothing against you personally especially since I don't know you and I avoid going there since it is against forum rules, but Lodef, come on you are being a stick in the mud.
Let's gets back on topic and talk about the upcoming series. We know you care less for both teams, but we can still have a decent discussion.
As a Pens fan, but avid hockey lover, I can't help but think Detroit will win the cup, if not at least they seem to have the upper hand in a tight series. I just hope it doesn't turn into a blowout.
Detroit in 6. If the Pens surprise us all, maybe they would shock us and win in 5 but I doubt it.
I really want to see some fast skating, great passing open hockey.
DocCasualty 05-20-08, 10:39 PM Hugh, I can't see how it can be anything but a great series. I'll be surprised if it turns into any kind of blowout. I'll stick by my prediction of a 6-7 games series. Been a Wings fan for over 40 years now so I don't know if my prediction of the Cup coming back to Detroit is based on what I want or what I see. Guess that's what it means to be a fan!

Because you and droid don't agree with my hockey opinions I should just be quiet? I don't think so! And what am I trolling about? Because I am not a Red Wings fans so thats what I must be doing. LOL!
And what does you still playing hockey have anything to do with this? Heres the answer, nothing!
BTW The USA won that year, it was called the Miracle on Ice! But yet I'm the one who knows nothing about hockey.
Getting back to the Series, Pens in seven!
As expected (by me at least), Dallas did not pose too much of a problem for the Red Wings. I'll definitely give Dallas game 5, but game 4 was taken from the Wings. Now on to the Pens. With a 12-2 record, they should be a greater challenge than the Stars.
I'm thinking the Pens have a good chance, but I also think Detroit will again have too much with a more balanced attack and better defence. The wild card for Pittsburgh could be Marc-Andre Fleury. In any case, it ought to be a good hockey matchup. It's too bad that many Detroit area viewers will be shut out, with WOW (one of the local cableco's) not having Versus, HD or SD.

I think it's going to be a series of defensive players having to come up big and not get caught out of position. Marc-Andre Fleury has me a little nervous, he has been solid all play-offs. I can't wait until Saturday to see how these teams play each other.
PittCaleb 05-21-08, 09:30 AM Just to chime in with my 2c - Let's Go Pens!
Cheers,

DOOOOOBIE DOO-BIE DOO...
LEts see, I wonder who I might be rooting for??
Wings in 6 but it should be a great series, I highly doubt any blowouts.
The pistons on the other hand look to have their hands full with Boston
Enough of the personal comments. Keep on topic or suspensions will be handed out.
PittCaleb 05-21-08, 12:00 PM To be more on-topic - did anyone see the news (via EndgdgetHD) that ESPN-HD viewers have 43% higher ratings than those who only get ESPN-SD. Wow!

Let's Go Pens!
drsimnal 05-21-08, 09:24 PM Go Pens GO. I just got back from Toronto (a conference). Went to the HOF gift shop and asked for a replica Stanley Cup featuring the team that will hoist it this year....the Pens of course. The clerk chuckled out loud and I bought the '91 cup; will have to go back and buy this years after the series! Here's to a great series!!

I have WOW and it has VS sd, not the HD feed but it does have the sd feed, channel 306
Go Wings
I'm glad FSN Pittsburgh isn't showing any games. They are not always in HD, especially the first round of this year and last years playoffs.
I don't know if we can beat Detroit, but I hope we do. I live overseeing the city skyline in the southside and hear all the noise from Carson Street (pittsburghers know where I mean) and I remember how nuts it was when the Steelers won the superbowl in Feb. 2006. I didn't sleep much that night, hearing all the horns, yelling, fireworks, here we go steelers chants, F**k Seattle etc.....but it was a good night none the less. Hoping for the same with the Pens ths year!
Stanley Cup Favors Penguins
Sandra Cup would love to be able to send her husband to a hockey playoff game.
She tried, through the box office, but she couldn't get even standing-room-only tickets for the diehard fan to watch his beloved Pittsburgh Penguins. A friend was going to sell her a pair for a recent game, but that deal fell through.
So when the Pens skate onto the ice in the finals against the Detroit Red Wings, Stanley Cup -- that's right, Stanley Joseph Cup, 59, of Saltsburg -- will not be in the building.
"The Penguins are so hot now, it's hard to get tickets because everyone wants them. I think they're going to go all the way," she said, lamenting her husband's misfortune.
"You'd think they'd want the real Stanley Cup there, because he could be a good-luck charm."
Stanley Cup, a steel worker who puts in daily 10-hour shifts at the Akers National Roll mill in Avonmore, doesn't think of himself as a talisman. Nope, he said, he's just a regular guy.
He is the son of a coal miner, Steven Stanley Cup, a man who had a "real good friend" named Stanley but no real interest in hockey. His father, the son of an Austrian dairy farmer, also liked the common ethnic nickname for Stanley -- "Stush."
So Stush, not Stanley, is what his friends call him.
He prefers his quiet life in the country to the hectic pace of any city he's ever visited. He collects hockey pucks but still needs one from the Penguins. His favorite player is Evgeni Malkin. His favorite beer is Miller Light, best enjoyed with his buddies at the Tunnelton Inn.
He doesn't like the limelight but is too polite to shun the attention his name draws, particularly during hockey season. Every couple of years around playoff time, his phone rings with interview requests from reporters across the country, he said.
Usually, it's a snowball effect. When one journalist looking for a new story angle digs up some hockey trivia, others follow the lead.
Sometimes, journalists get his 91-year-old aunt, Helen, because her phone number is listed. She giggles and quizzes reporters about their credentials "to make sure you are who you say you are because you just can't tell these days" before she checks her address book and offers his number.
"I got lots of calls when this first started," she said, telling a reporter that she's no hockey fan, but she's certainly proud of her nephew. "I like it to a certain extent, but not that much, not like him."
Cup said he doesn't mind the attention from local print journalists, but television and radio interviews make him nervous. He talks to reporters only because his wife and daughters, Stephanie and Sabrina, get a kick out of it.
"I'm not much of a talker," Cup said.
Years ago, his name got him some free beers in a Toronto hockey bar. In 2001, a Detroit radio station tried but couldn't convince him to visit the city to bring luck to the Red Wings.
His family persuaded him to step into the spotlight briefly in 2006, when he served as an ambassador for the OLN cable television network for National Hockey League games. He went to New York with his daughter and her husband, where he did some television interviews and met some players.
The network sent him and his son-in-law to the first playoff match between Carolina and Edmonton. He touched the Stanley Cup and had his picture taken with his namesake trophy.
That was a thrill, but three days in New York City was not.
"New York was scary to me. I don't like the city," he said.
Although he'd love to see the Pens in person -- just as he did for seven or eight games last season -- Cup will be with his friends at the bar when the Penguins take on Detroit. It'll be fun, he said.
Tunnelton Inn owners Jan and Kevin Nagg put out free food while their patrons party and watch the games on a big screen TV. They've hung a picture of Cup, holding the Stanley Cup, above their bar.
"I keep teasing him that I'm going to take his picture and make copies of it so he can autograph them for us to sell them," Jan Nagg said.
He takes it all in stride. For a regular guy, a game on TV and beer and buddies is OK.
"That's what we always do," he said. "We'd like to be at the game, but tickets are tough to come by, so we'll just hang out and watch them together."

We? I dont think you could beat Detroit either. Maybe the players on the penguins can. But I doubt it. Wings in 5
I have to tout my hat to my beloved red wings. I do repsect the young guns on the pens as well as the red wings players do. I just dont believe the Pens have played anyone who has been a formidable back checking opponent like detroit. Philly did it once and won that game. Great skill levels for sure on both sides of the ice, but Pens to me are still in the growing stage. They WILL be the dominant team for years to come, just not yet. Good battle starting saturday for sure. Cant wait. Game On!
I think it will be Detroit in 6. I've always liked the Penguins though and love Mario for helping keep them in Pittsburgh. I think Detroit has a better line-up top to bottom but Pittsburgh has a touch more youthfull exuberance, which can go a long way, it's tough to call.
just another thing id like to ask you fellow hockey nuts. Anyone miss hearing Gary Thorne doing the play-by-play like I do? The guy used to help make it more exciting and get "in the moment". He had the hair on my neck standing up at times hehe. I really do wish the NHL would reconsider who they make deals with for NHL coverage. As of now its the "Who do you want to see play tonight from the Eastern Conference?" games thanks to Comcast and VS :(

Not at all, I enjoy Gary Thorne doing baseball and he is tolerable for hockey, but does not compare to the great hockey play-by-play men of Bob Cole and Jim Hughson from the CBC.

You remember when Mickey Redmond and Dave Strader used to do the games together in Detroit, they were great together.
1080eyes 05-23-08, 09:45 AM big wing fan here! Detroit in 6, and could be 5 if chelios doesn't play. Pens won't have the same room to work that the Rangers and Flyers gave them. Over all wings a re 1/2 step faster then the Pens. This is going to be fun!
Filthy McNasty 05-23-08, 09:59 AM but does not compare to the great hockey play-by-play men of Bob Cole and Jim Hughson from the CBC.
I wouldn't put Bob Cole in the same sentence as Jim Hughson. Hopefully, this will be Cole's last broadcasts on CBC.

scottro 05-23-08, 11:05 AM I'm probably being a homer, but I think all you wings fans underestimate the Penguins.
Hopefully your team will do the same. ;)

These are my two favorite teams, i follow them both religiously. I just think the Wings are a smarter, more experienced team with better defense and puck control.
steverobertson 05-23-08, 01:38 PM I like the Pen's in this series and I also think it will be over in 6 but as a neutral observer I just want to see a great hard hitting series with great goaltending
steverobertson 05-23-08, 02:34 PM Here is a funny story http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=3409330
wolfgaze 05-23-08, 02:35 PM Wings are a MUCH better opponent than any of the teams the Pens have faced thus far in the playoffs... More experienced, more balanced, and much much stronger on the puck in all 3 zones....
I think Wings in 6....
Detroit needs to stay out of the box and avoid giving chances to Pittsburgh's PP.
I'm probably being a homer, but I think all you wings fans underestimate the Penguins.
Hopefully your team will do the same. ;)
Seems to me most people are picking the series to go 6 or 7 which means neither side is underestimating the other. I'm hoping it goes the distance and the Pens win the 7th game in Detroit. If this series lives up to it's expectations, it should be a very entertaining one and will be good for the NHL.
DoritoOfDeath 05-24-08, 11:05 AM Pens in 6.
