Posting this "Slate" article is in no way intended as a political statement. Nor is the article itself political in nature. It is more a commentary on the irony of Sen McCain's advocacy of HDTV and it's possible effect on his candidacy.

I was surprised by the comment, "High-definition TVs are not yet a mass-market consumer product". Even later in the same article, the author acknowledges "... you may find that your local electronics store now sells digital only." Of course, not all digital sets are HD; but most are. My local Best Buy has perhaps twenty times as many HD sets on display as SD.

Now, whether or not people are actually watching HD on those sets is another story.

My local Walmart does not have a single SDTV in stock, anymore. Seems to be pretty mass market, to me.

Slate is a little behind the times.

I really hope that most people are not so shallow that they would vote for or against someone because an HD image of the candidate shows that they are really not that good looking.

I mean really, the presidential election is not a beauty contest.

I would hope that politicians would not try to slow down the spread of technologies like HDTV because it might show the public their facial flaws.

Let's not go there.
