Hi all,

I'm trying to SDI mod my DVP-CX777ES and seem to have run into some issues.

I purchased a Pixel Magic BT656Pro (http://www.pixelmagicsystems.com/products/sdi/bt656pro.htm) SDI card.

I followed these instructions (http://www.binarymetal.com/sdi_mod.pdf) to get the solder points.

A tech at work did all the soldering. It looks like he did a great job.

However, when I try the player out. The composite output shows green flashes (this may be ok, I hear the SDI board may interfere with the composite out) but nothing at all comes out of the SDI port... and after a few minutes of playing the DVD locks up so I have to pull the plug to reset it.

I just took the player apart and it looks like all the internals are in good order. No obvious damage on the board. Solders looks good and are in the right places.

The LED on the mod board lights up indicating that the clock signal has been detected.

I then double checked the instructions in the service manual (http://www.binarymetal.com/service_manual.pdf) and based on my understanding of the manual (I'm a software guy) it looks like the solder points in the instructions are on the money. D2-D9 traced back to the correct pins on the decoder chip.

The SDI port is going into a DVDO VP30 with SDI card.

I'll have the tech double check the solders tomorrow to see if he's shorting anything.

That aside, can anyone provide any information or give a second oppinion on the instructions or have instructions of their own on completing this mod?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Stan

Cliff Notes:
0. Sony DVP-CX777ES player
1. BT656Pro SDI Card (http://www.pixelmagicsystems.com/products/sdi/bt656pro.htm)
2. These instructions (http://www.binarymetal.com/sdi_mod.pdf)
3. Service manual (http://www.binarymetal.com/service_manual.pdf)
4. Component shows image with green flashes (may be ok problem)
5. Unit crashes if left playing a DVD for a few minutes
6. Nothing coming out of SDI card, but clock LED is on
7. Connected to DVDO VP30 w ABT102 w SDI upgrade

More Info:

I'm thinking there's a short that's causing the crash, but then why would it not always crash immediately instead of after playing a movie for a while... perhaps some feedback or crossover in the wires? Or malfunctioning SDI card? Also, nothing is coming out of the SDI, I at least expected gibberish. I'm lost...

Updates:

1. Put the board under a microscope and the solders look fine. Nothing appears to be shorted.

2. Scoped D2-D9 solder points and they appear to be data pins.

3. Scoped the 2 ground points, the clock point, and the +5V and they are look good.

4. Looked up D2-D9, clock, clock ground, ground, +5V points in the service manual and they match the solder points in the instructions.

5. Crashing problem has been fixed. Turned out the DVD got really dusty and was making the DVD player angry. Cleaned up the DVD and tried other DVDs, no more crashing.

Todo:

If I get a chance on Wed, I'd like to buzz out the wires to make sure they're not being misrouted or that the connector has them in the wrong places. That way I can be sure that the signals are getting to the appropriate pins on the SDI board.

Update:

I buzzed all the wires today and everything looks good. There is nothing that appears wrong with my SDI mod.

Only possibilities now are either the SDI card in the DVD player... or the SDI card in the DVDO.

Is it possible I got the wrong card? I thought I needed a 656... or do I need a 601???
