I believe there's significant confusion between the the HDMI interface standard and HDMI cables. They are not the same.

The various versions of the HDMI standard affect changes in protocol and functions of HDMI operation, not necessarily changes in the cable. All HDMI cables are functionally forward and backward compatible. The only version that affects the cable to this point is 1.3 which increases the maximum bandwidth requirement. But even older versions of the cables will likely meet that requirement, at least for shorter cables.
