View Full Version : Where on earth is the "Spring Update?

Here we are on May 20th and we haven't even heard what is in the spring update this year. Each year it seems Microsoft is interested in pushing the boundries of what spring really is, and this year it looks likely that the update won't be released until June, as we usually get at least a full week warning before the update hits.

In case you're wondering the "Spring Update" was released on May 9th last year.

Oh, and yes, I've seen the "rumored list" and I think it means nothing for now.

I have heard any thing from its not coming and will be here in the summer instead. To there having issues with it. There always a let down. Usually only a couple good features. The rest is to make them more $$$$$.

In the United States and the rest of the northern hemisphere, the first day of the summer season is the day of the year when the Sun is farthest north (on June 20th or 21st). This day is known as the Summer Solstice.

It is still Spring until June 19th or 20th, depending on the year.

Is it even really all that necessary at this point? I mean, don't get me wrong, some new features are always nice but it seems like the 360 firmware is pretty solid at this point, the interface is (finally) nicely organized and it supports Divx. Anything I would want at this point is a small fringe feature.

I don't think Microsoft is obligated to release an update twice a year... It's a good deal they do though!

I would love to see some more features for slideshow. Such as a adjustable time, or different special effects. Let the xbox remote volume buttons actuly adjust the volume of either music.

Yes, I figured someone would post a quote like that. But does anyone really believe it's Spring in June? Please. When I got out of school for my "Summer break" it began in early June.

Regardless, they seem to push this "Spring update" as they call it, further and further into the year each year. Then they push the fall update further and closer to new year's each year. It's just sort of funny to watch it slide each year.

Anyway, there are plenty of very important features that could still be added right now. How about the ability to cancel your subscription from your actual Xbox instead of having to call them on the phone? That would be a nice change.

Depends on where you are in the states with that question. Otherwise the calender says Summer starts around 20 June get over it. They feel they have until then to deliver so bottom line is it will come when it comes.

FYI, in the last podcast from Major Nelson and e, they bashed that list of rumored new features saying that it was a wholly inaccurate list.

Have you checked under your couch cushions? It might be there. I just hope you didn't leave it in your pants' pocket and ran it through the wash.

Good for you. So not only do they HAVE to put out an update in the spring, they can't even go by the calendar. They have to go by your personal interpretation of when spring is. Awesome. Sense of entitlement much?

This may come as a shock, but regardless of what your mom told you, you're not special.

LOL... that will NEVER be added.

Doesnt matter when its released, you wont see the features the customer actually wants, just more fluff like rearranging the dashboard.

Figured as much. That "rumored list" had waaaay too many great features on it to be real. ;)

As others have said "does it really matter". Definitely something I don't give a hoot about or have any anticipation for. I'm just looking forward to some good games. It is just going to be a bunch of rearranging and some new or reworked functionality. Really nothing to get your panties all bunched up about.

BTW it has been spring here in Florida since February.

I'm more looking forward to the next RockBand update where there will hopefully be a "jukebox" mode to play all that DLC as a music source, and even more importantly I'm hoping for custom setlists/playlists that are accessible in al modes: create one setlist and pull it up in quickplay, solo tour, BWT, on-line, or jukebox mode.

You'll get all those features you want for Rock Band, if you buy Rock Band 2 this fall. I wouldn't be expecting any features being added to the current game though.

I disagree. I think MS has added lots of features that the user community has repeatedly asked for...are there things that are still being asked for? Sure, there are but I'm still optimistic that MS will deliver; especially considering the competition Sony is starting to put on their market.

Next-Gen interview with general manager of Xbox Live Marc Whitten (http://http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=10620&Itemid=2&limit=1&limitstart=0)

Last year Xbox 360 owners got a spring dashboard update in early May. It's now late May and you still haven't announced anything regarding this year's update. Should 360 owners be holding their breaths for it?

We have taken a different approach this spring and spent a lot of our time and resources of building the proper infrastructure and scale for the service not just today but also into the future. So while most users will not notice any significant changes to the dashboard this spring, I can tell you that the team will be releasing a new digital rights management (DRM) tool next month that will allow you to better consolidate your licenses for downloaded content to a single Xbox and allow you the freedom to be able to play your content both online and offline.

Yes, this new tool will officially launch next month on Xbox.com and will allow you to be able to consolidate these licenses onto one box so you can access things like Xbox LIVE Arcade games and TV show you have downloaded even if you are not online. Because this involved allowing users to re-download licenses for content that belongs to our partners it has taken some time to work out the agreements with them to allow this, but we have heard the concerns from folks about DRM and are happy to announce that everything is nearly in place to roll this out in June.

Ack. Does anyone knows what this means? My system just died, and while I have a Best Buy replacement plan, I was going to eat the cost of what I paid for it so that if I went through MS I could easily relicense my content just by re-downloading. My service request is already processing, but now I'm not sure after reading this....I could have a new system tonight, but I don't want to be stuck having to go online if this new feature isn't as good as it sounds, or if you have to go through MS.
What should I do?

Contact MS and find out if you can wait it out when this launches which it seems like it shouldn't be a problem. You shouldn't have any problem anyway as long as you set up your new 360 with the same gamertag you should be good to go especially with the good news about the DRM. Keep us informed on the progress.

Called MS, as expected, the agent knows nothing of this.

What worries me is this (from xbox.com):
Important Information About Your Downloaded Content After Console Repair/Refurbishment
Notice to customers who have had their Xbox 360 consoles serviced by Microsoft: If you previously downloaded content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace prior to your console service, you need to connect to Xbox LIVE to restore the licenses for that content on this console. If you don't, you'll only be able to use that content when signed in to Xbox LIVE with the profile that originally downloaded the content.

To restore your licenses:

Attach your hard drive or memory unit.
Turn on the console.
Sign in to Xbox LIVE with the gamer profile that originally downloaded the content.
Go to Xbox LIVE Marketplace and select Account Management, Download History.
Select an item and then select Download Again.
Repeat step 5 for each item in your download history.
After you download your content again, anyone on this console can use it, whether you're signed in to Xbox LIVE or not.

License restoration will only work on the console as returned to you by Microsoft’s service center.

I wonder how this tool differs from the above, and what's involved.

It says it will be on xbox.com, so maybe it will let you assign your license to consoles registered under your account.
