I just got a Barco Graphics 808S and have no idea how to set it up. I have connected it to my laptop via a VGA to 5 bnc connector cable (port 4/5), but no picture on the screen. I have done the adjustments/ focus/ convergence etc. The internal cross hair pattern seems to be focused, and converged. How do I tell the projector which input port to get the signal from?
Are there any set up threads for this projector anywhere with pictures and instructions useful to a Noob?
Thanks and I apologize if this has already been covered elsewhere. I tried searching the forum but came up empty... perhaps I dont know the search process here on this forum.

When projector is in stb, press 5 (like port 5) to start it.

Then you need to adjust geometry and convergence again, because internal patterns are separete memory blocks.

Read installation and owner manuals first.

Doc,

I went through the learning curve of being a n00b with a BG808s myself. First, if you have great tubes, I envy you; the 808 is a hell of a machine even with imperfect tubes.

About getting a signal:

-You probably need to use PowerStrip or similar to force H-Sync negative, or the Barco won't like it.
-I couldn't get mine to work with my laptop. Even though PowerStrip said the sync was correct, it wasn't. If you can't get something to work, try a regular PC with a reasonably good graphics card (though I seem to recall some of the newest ones not working with powerstrip).
-Get Nokia Monitor Test - do a search on google.

Now, for a basic setup:

Switch to the video mode you'll really be using. Since you're new, you should start with something really easy, just to get the feel for things. You're going to redo this a LOT anyway, so don't worry if it's not the real resolution you'll run. Doing a lower resolution lets you see what's going on a bit easier and eliminates some trickiness that might be confusing at first.

You could even try something like 1024x576p, or 1184x666 (A lot of 1271 guys use that). The point isn't to get great resolution but to learn how the PJ works.

OK, so:

1) Set the PJ to your target / test resolution. Doesn't matter what image you're sending.

2) Do your initial geometry and convergence setup with "genlocked pattern" which will use the internal test patterns but 'locked' to the incoming frequency.

3) Fine-tune convergence and focus with the "external source" (IIRC, it's been a while since I've hard the barco on :().

This doesn't cover mechanical and optical setup.

A couple of things to look at:
-Guy Kuo's focus bible (look at the sticky links in this forum)
-Curt Palme's projector setup guide: http://www.curtpalme.com/CRTSetupGuide.shtm

Read those about ten times. :)

It'll take you a while to get a really nice picture, and even then you'll have a lot more you can do. But it's a hell of a lot of fun, and a BG808s is a fantastic PJ. Aside from going to a 9" monster, about all you can do to help it is color filter the lenses and mod it to be liquid coupled (with color filtering a lot more important IMO, and much easier). Enjoy it!
