I currently finalized my speakers, AV Receiver, and Subwoofer and am now looking at speaker wires. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Receiver: Onkyo TX-NR905
Front L/R: Definitive Mythos One
Center: Definitive Mythos Three
Rear L/R: Definitive Mythos Five
Subwoofer: JL Audio Fathom F112

The following cables have been suggested to me by the store I go to. Anyone with experience on this who can speak to the quality of these cables, and/or give better suggestions, would be most helpful.

MCX2S-ML10/10
2x Monster 10' M Speaker Cable (Front)

MCX1S-MLC10
1x Monster 10' M Center Cable (Center)

MLMT-B
6x Monster Mlock Bananas

XPMS30
2x Monster Speaker Cable 30' (Rears)

Thanks in advance!

Forget Monster. Pick up a 100-foot roll of 12-gauge cable at the hardware store, or Monoprice, Parts Express, wherever. You don't even need banana plugs.

I wouldn't buy from Monster simply because I don't like their corporate approach to their competitors:

They have a long history of this kind of crap and I will not buy another Monster product until they change their corporate "lawsuit-happy" approach.

BTW, Blue Jeans Cable is a forum sponsor and I respect that by sending my $$$ their way whenever they have a product that works for me. I also use RAM electronics cables, another forum sponsor. Both companies have links to their website at the top of the page. IME, they make excellent products that work as well as anything made by Monster.

Hmm. Seems to be much hate-age for Monster :)

craig john,

I'll take a look at Blue Jeans reviews. Never heard of the company. Any appreciable difference in the quality of the wire?

mcnarus,

The higher the gauge the more power is required to send the signal through correct?

Gauge of the wire means more current can be carried and is ideal for longer distances, because the signal will degrade less. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Getting a long roll is very nice, as I can get 50' of 12AWS cable for $25 shipped.

In addition you can get banana plugs for ~$1.75 for a pair. Plugs aren't necessary, and in fact can complicate things by making more faulty connections possible. I like banana plugs personally just because they make it a bit more simple to connect and disconnect speakers.

Marginally. Here's everybody's favorite chart (http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm#wiretable) on what gauge wire you need.

The higher the gauge, the more power is lost in the cable. It also affects the resistance of the speaker+cable combination as seen by the amplifier. Generally, you want the cable to be invisible (as close to 0 ohms as possible, or a small fraction of the resistance of the speaker).

Ok from that chart it looks like 16 gauge is what I need. My rear speakers are Mythos Five's and they are 4ohm - 8ohm compatible. It's 16' from one wall to the other, so figure another 8' to run them underneath the couch and into the media console and it'll be fine.

Thanks for the help everyone!

16 would work very well; for a little extra robust-ness 14 would also work well.

edit-great deals, great quality from monoprice.com

Yup.... jump up 1 size to 14ga and never look back with the small amount more then the 16ga its worth it...

Monoprice & Bluejeans cable both offer very good wire for a decent price, can't go wrong with them, they are both fast shippers.

I decided to go with 12 gauge in the end. It was only slightly more expensive than the 14 and 16 gauge at the Proline store I went to. Got everything hooked up and watched Casino Royale.

During the part where the building collapses into the waters in Venice, all I could do was lean back and yell out "WOW!!!!!!!!!!".

Absolutely amazing.
