Wow, how long have we been waiting for this? The Tiffany Network that practically invented football in HD, has been making way too many HD fans who follow the lower ranked teams in the NFL -- poor Browns' fans -- suffer through SD football just about every Sunday for as long as we can remember. Meanwhile the last broadcast network to go HD, would deliver almost every game in HD, every week. Well enough is enough, and the very credible Ken H from the AVS Forum has brought out his Magic 8 Ball -- which has a much track record then the one on our desk -- and confirmed that CBS is going to live up to its promise that for the 2008-2009 season every single NFL game on CBS will be presented in HD. All we can say is, about time.

Oh Almighty Magic 8Ball,

Please reply to this message with the following information:

1- The stock that will be the leader in 2008
2- The six numbers when the Mega Millions hit 300 Mi
3- Jessica Biel phone number(BOING! Sound of Mrs Travelfan1 hitting TravelFan1 in the head)

Also, I heard that Indy V will be called: Indiana Jones and the AVS Magic 8Ball ;)

Great NFL HD News, now if the magic 8ball can somehow convince Directv to offer Vs in HD Ch. 604, in their normal Commercial Choice packages for Bars and Restaurants I would be a happy man. My home local cable Co. Cox, in S. OC. So. Cal doesn't offer it either and being a Pittsburgh native I'm pretty much screwed tonight in my ability to watch the Pens game in Hi D. I can't get it at home or even go to a Sports Bar. I run the Steeler fan club out here and our Sports Bar has been showing the CBS NFL games since 01-02. Tonight, no joy....

how much does a bar or restaurant pay for sunday ticket ? is it based off its size, location ?

Ray Lucca

Sunday Ticket is based on the Fire code, 1-50, 50-99, 100-150 etc. plus of course the Super Fan now being additional for the HD. We have 20 HD receivers, 11 early games, Nascar, Baseball, Basketball, Golf, Tennis, a couple of early games run late, 5 or 6 late games, we are probably going to add a few more this summer.

If all games on CBS are now in HD, will they make the extra cost of SuperFan HD included in Sunday Ticket? I never used the other features of Superfan, just to get the HD feeds. I hated to pay for Sunday Ticket and also for Superfan just to enjoy HD. Now with all games in HD, hopefully not 2 charges anymore.

there still will be 2 charges....still an extra $99 for superfan.

If there are going to be two separate charges, then I expect D* to either stick by it for all OR repeal the Superfan charge for all.

Hopefully, it is not necessary to have anymore threads devoted to "how to get the Superfan charge waived".:(

I have yet to pay for SF and will not this year I either get it for free or drop the whole package it will be their decision not mine. The ST is just not waht it used to be with all the games that are now available on OTA or ESPN or NFL Network. I really don't think I would miss it all that much unlike 5-10 years ago.

the browns were dissed on hd alot last year because every year they sucked....now off their 10 win season the pressure is on them and they have a brutally tough schedule to go with that as well.

What's interesting to me about the news in this thread...it's huge! If news like this came out three years ago, this thread would have easily been 30 pages and more by now.

The fact that this thread being only a month old and only currently has about 30 comments that does not even fill up one page speaks loudly as to the current state of HD programming.

With DirecTV, to me it's easy to get lost with all the HD programming and channels out there...that and the fact that I only have one SD channel programmed into my channel list helps. Because of this and all this HD NFL news, I think we've become very expecting that everything should be in HD. And if it's not, we scratch our heads wondering what's going on!

CBS covers the AFC only, unless it's an interconference game with the AFC as the visiting team. As such, HD coverage for Lions and Cardinals only affected if they are hosting an AFC team.

Here is an article from the Sprots Video Group detailing CBS's plans.

CBS Sports Is Set To Go All-HD for NFL
Aug 29, 2008 - 9:55:21 AM

By Carl Lindemann

At CBS Sports, this season’s NFL football coverage will mark the last in the transition to end-to-end HD. According to Ken Aagaard, EVP of Engineering, Operations and Production Services (Editor’s note: Aagaard also serves as chairman of Sports Video Group), the network may be able to deliver all HD, all the time -- if the cards fall right. Regardless, this is the opportunity to work out the remaining kinks to make sure that everything is in place to make that happen in the 2009 season.

“Next season, we have a contractual obligation [with the NFL] to do all-HD,” he says. “This year, we’re right on track and very close to achieving that.”

What remains on CBS Sports to-do list? For the most part, the major technical hurdles are past. The big picture in the jigsaw puzzle is clear, with just a few missing pieces still to find their place.

“All of our trucks and game sites will be HD. Everything will be produced in 16x9, 1080i HD,” Aagaard says. “Our issue right now is that we may not be able to distribute completely in HD. It depends on our networking. There are occasions where there will be issues. For example, in a double-header, a late game may start in 4x3 until we can free up distribution equipment from the earlier game to get the HD signal out. It’s very possible we will have no problems all year. Still, there’s a multitude of circumstances were we can’t transmit in HD, and these may surface during the season.”

Even though Aagaard has hope that these scenarios won’t surface, the main goal of the build-out in the months ahead is seeing to it that they can’t happen in the future. One element in attaining that is getting a full complement of coordination rooms up and running.

“We still have two coordination rooms that have to come on-line,” he says. “We can work around this using the eight in place, along with some additional HD facilities at CBS.”

What does this mean for viewers?

“Our videotape-highlight area is still not fully redone, so, on any given Sunday, our highlights at halftime won’t be in HD. That is the last piece that we’ll have in place next summer.”

Once this part of the HD game plan is complete, the next engineering issue is to resolve ongoing issues with 5.1 surround sound.

“This was the biggest problem at the Olympics, and an engineering challenge that will continue to evolve,” says Aagaard. “This is something that everyone -– including manufacturers -- will need to get involved with in a coordinated effort.”

Yeah, that's probably it. I just had my Dish TurboHD installed today here in San Diego, and I was pretty underwhelmed with the Chargers vs. 49ers game. I did catch the Andy Roddick US Open match, and that looked GREAT to me however.

Browns 08;)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the Browns are going to be 6-10 or 7-9 at best this season. They go from a last place schedule to the second toughest schedule in the league. They weren't 0-6 against winning teams last year for no reason. They will come back down to reality unfortunately for Browns fans.

This is also good news for Australia who will now be showing NFL live in High Definition for the first time ever on Free-to-Air. For local Aussie viewers, tune into Ten HD (not on SD or Analogue) in the coming days. Because they are live, the games will be shown around 8am local time.

Yes, see the article I posted in post 43. All games produced in HD, some late games may start in SD until a late running early game ends. However, these situations is likely to be few and far between, if at all.
