i just tried looking at the service menu of my plasma tv, and when i saw the words, "HDMI CALIBRATION" i just wanted to see what it was, and well no my tv has an HDMI calibration sign on it that wont go away and everything looks weird!!

PLEASE HELP ME!!!
Does your manual state anything about a factory reset?
Such as unpluging it for a certain amount of time, or plugging it back in while holding one of the front panel buttons?
----
And just because I have to ask; did you try powering it off and back on again?
Hope it helps
-Brian

the tv locked the remote out, i couldnt access anything, all i did, was that i click ONE BUTTON!

ALL OF MY IMPUTS HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY SCREWED UP!!!!!
ChrisWiggles 05-22-08, 06:16 PM Sorry. This is likely one of the situations where it starts an auto-calibration routine to an externally supplied pattern, which in your case was not supplied. This will totally screw everything up.
You hosed your TV. Your fault. You should purchase a new one.
Lesson learned. DO NOT go into the service menu unless you are qualified and know what you're doing. Doing so is totally your responsibility.
It is not the manufacturer's responsibility to fix the problem. You might be able to pay for them to fix it, but again, this is why we repeatedly state that you DON'T go into the service menu without knowing what you're doing and assuming the risks.
Sorry.
Did you read my post Danny? It might help...
But Chris is probably right. Sorry.
factory reset was useless!!!!!!!!!
i dont get it, itt says HDMI CALIBRATION in big letters, and i didnt even click anything, all i did, was hit the little click bar to the right, and it was off,
i didnt even realize what i did!
i didnt go in there to change anything, i just wanted to see what it looked like!!
now my dad is absolulty furious at me!!!!
HOW MUCH WOULD IT BE TO HAVE IT FIXED?!
please help!

we just got this one and we just cant manage to get anything else!
we need this TV!
can BEST BUY fix it with geek squad?

It may not be fixable. I have seen where clients have done this. You need factory test patterns to complete this and you must be able to see the display menus. I would contact the manufacturer and see what they say. You may have a brick on your hands though. This is one of the reasons people give cautions about entering the service mode.
Your best bet is to contact the manufacturer and ask what can be done.
I HIGHLY doubt geek squad could do squat :-p
Another suggestion would be to disconnect ALL the cables to your TV for a couple of minutes (especially HDMI) including the power cord if it's detachable.
Sorry, but live and learn is what it seems like it's boiling down to for you :(

i dont even know what i did though!
i tried to get out of the service menu!
i didnt try to do anything,
btw, if i do contact samsung, how would they help me.
They would be the only ones who have the necessary patterns to complete the process you started by accident.
I feel your pain though, I've done plenty of things like this to other people's stuff in the past :D
In all honesty, it's not a good feeling.
Best of luck,
-Brian
how do you get the patterns??
can i download them and put them on a FLASH DRIVE!???
ChrisWiggles 05-22-08, 07:06 PM Contact the manufacturer, tell them what you've done (and don't try to fix anything more), and see if it is possible to have them repair the set. It won't be repaired under warranty since it is your fault, but it may be possible. They may refuse, or it may not be possible. Hopefully it will be possible, but likely will involve shipping it to a factory service center, at your cost, and at your cost for repair. Unlikely that Best Buy can fix it. Be aware that claiming that the TV set simply got screwed up on its own and trying to claim a warranty repair/replacement constitutes fraud.
I'm sorry that you're in the situation, however you did basically voluntarily void your warranty and enter service items to which you should not have had access, which you did at your own risk. This kind of thing is also a big negative because it motivates manufacturers to further limit, hide, and restrict adjustment item access which is of benefit for professional calibrators to attain the best image, and to enthusiasts who know and assume the risks of their actions.
While I hope you can get this problem rectified without having to purchase a whole new TV, and without unreasonable cost, be aware that what you've done is frowned upon strongly by this community of calibrators who depend upon access to these menus to properly adjust the display. The more people who hose their sets as you have, the more likely manufacturers hide and obfuscate these menus, to everyone's detriments.
Hope you can work things out okay, but again, BIG lesson learned that I hope others also draw experience from and DON'T go into their service menu unless they assume the risk that they turn their device into a doorstop. I hope that's not totally the case here.
As I said "They (i.e.) Samsung would be the only ones who have the patterns"
So, no.
More than likely, you ship your F'd up TV to Samsung, and they fix it for a price and ship it back, or replace it if still under warranty.
That is to say IF!! they will do that!
-Brian
Your best bet may be to switch to using the component inputs. I know one person that did this after doing what you did to his Samsung.

I would be extremely surprised if they fixed it under warranty. User damage isn't covered by any kind of warranty. You don't get a free TV if you embed an axe in the face of it. And you don't get a free TV if you brick it by (essentially) hacking it.
Jeff does have a good point though. Maybe you can still see a decent picture on composite input.... :-/
That's why I said "IF!!" LOL!!!
And Jeff said "component" not "composite"
Like you said, it might be worth a shot :-p
-Brian
ChrisWiggles 05-22-08, 07:24 PM yeah well, the point is anything analog; other than HDMI input.
I still think we need a sticky thread on this.
Danny V - By the way, shipping a moderately-sized TV is a fairly expensive proposition. Shipping a large TV can be downright-prohibitive for a consumer who does not have access to a freight carrier. Depending upon your set, you may be looking at a significantly greater cost to fix the existing one than to get a new one. I would STRONGLY recommend getting a quote from Samsung tomorrow, as well as a freight quote. Memorial Day tends to bring a lot of sales on electronics, and you want to know what your cost is going to be to fix it versus any sale ads in the paper.

Sorry Chris, I wasn't trying to be a smart @lec.
I agree that this ought to be stickied as a cautionary tale and that is why there are professional calibrators.
-Brian
ChrisWiggles 05-22-08, 07:34 PM I agree about the sticky. I had a thread about this two years ago:
http://archive2.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=720819
A recurring theme, unfortunately.
NONE OF IT MATTERS NOW!!
I WAS USING A REEEEEALLY OUTDATED FIRMWARE AND WHEN I INSTALLED THE NEW ONE... poof EVERYTHING IS BACK TO NORMAL AND IM OK!
NO OTHER HELP NEEDED!
THANK YOU ALL FOR SCARING THE LIVING CRAP OUT OF ME!!!!!!!!
You deserved it :D
Now, don't do it again!!
-Brian
never!
ill only mess around with the actual menu settings!
at least there i can reset it if i dont like it!
This is a bad sign actually. It means loading firmware in the Samsung's resets the calibration to factory default.
IDC!!
i got my baby back!!
ChrisWiggles 05-22-08, 09:34 PM I am very happy to hear that.
I hope everyone reading also learned a lesson.

First of all I'm SICK AND TIRED OF THE LOGIN ON THIS FORUM. WHY DOES IT ALWAYS TELL ME I ENTERED AN INVALID PASSWORD WHEN I KNOW VERY WELL WHAT I ENTERED?!!?!?
Fine. Nothing personal.
With that out of the way, I must say, Wiggles, that is a frightening concept - that one could nuke certain TV models by simply entering service mode/service menu without actually touching anything. This probably makes being an ISFer a little scary!
Wow... Thanks for having to suffering though this lesson so I didn't have to... :)
As a new member I find that this forum really does make it seem like such an appealing thing to access the service menu to better try and calibrate your TV. And as a photographer I assumed that I could at least try to pick out colors, but I'm glad I didn't do it now. I knew there had to be some serious catch.
This really should have a sticky

That's actually very unlikely, never seen it happen, or heard of it. The user in this thread didn't just look, but did engage a specific item in the service menu. Still, it's very easy, as illustrated in this thread, to engage or change items unintentionally since often the controls in service menus may be confusing or abnormal. They're not designed to be easy to understand because it's only for service technicians, who have training to know what's what.
