View Full Version : Bitstream from Denon DVD 5910
xj bandit 05-22-08, 10:42 PM Ok, I need some serious help here. I recently purchased a used dvd 5910, and I love it except for the fact that I can't seem to get it to put out bitstream. No matter what setting I choose, my pre/pro (Integra dtc 9.8) shows "PCM" beside the source, and when I check the input under display, it shows Multich PCM. I want the 9.8 do perform the decoding for movies.
I have read the instructions front to back on the denon (and the 9.8), and called their help desk twice, as well as re-initialized it, and still, always PCM output no matter what I do. Can anyone help with this??? Please???? Am I misinterpreting the display? If so why does it show PCM on my 9.8?
The display on the denon will show up dolby digital or DTS, depending on the format that the disc is, and the 6 spkr indicators light up, so I know the denon is doing the decoding. How do I get it to output bitstream??? help!!!
Current settings under digital interface setup is set for normal(multi), which according to the manual is supposed to tell the player to output bitstream. I have also verified that it is not the 9.8 as I have a DVD recorder hooked up via HDMI as well (set to output bitstream) and it works just fine, 9.8 displays Dolby Digital, DTS, or whatever format the disc is in. How do I get the denon to do that??
HELP!!
PooperScooper 05-23-08, 01:24 PM It's not sending mch PCM via S/PDIF. How do you have it connected?

xj bandit 05-23-08, 06:42 PM It's connected via HDMI only. Last night I hooked up a digital coax to it and it works perfectly. So currently, I am running HDMI for picture and Coax for bitstream audio. Tested it once more and still, PCM only over HDMI. Any thoughts?
PooperScooper 05-24-08, 07:40 AM Ah, ok. Last time I paid much attention to 5910 posts the player only had DVI output. :) It's obviously a bug of some sort. At least you have an easy workaround.

xj bandit 06-11-08, 02:43 PM Ok, so after not being able to figure out what the problem is with my denon 5910 not putting out bitstream via HDMI, I decided to take it into a shop and have them look at it. Fortuantely, they were able to fix it. However, i thought I would post this in case it helps anyone else out there who may be having a similar problem. The following is a conversation I had with a member while trying to identify the problem.

Please let me know as it is driving me nuts! I have read the manual 2x, and have called denon, and have re-initialized it, but still no bitstream. Please help with any info that you have...

Sorry to hear you're having the same issue. I have NOT been able to find a fix for this yet. I have succumed to just using the coaxial out for audio, which will then "bitstream" to my processor. For the life of me, I can't figure out why the 5910ci will only output PCM over HDMI. I have all the settings properly set up in the menu, so I'm at a loss.
I'm using HDMI for the video, but coax for the audio. It would be nice if I could use HDMI for both!
Let me know if you find a fix for this - and I will do the same!
Regards

What do you mean by "removing the dlink completely"? Do you mean the cable itself, or something internally? Right now, I don't have the dlink cable hooked up at all....

On a better note, I have spent the last hour calling around to denon repair shops trying to see if anyone has repaired something like this. I finally got in touch with one that has an update for the unit here and in europe from denon, but it is quite intensive, as in 4 separate discs intensive. He said there are about 12 pg's worth of instructions for it so he is reviewing it to see if it is the right update to fix this problem.
Basically, after skimming it, he said it looks like the update corrects a communication issue that occurs between the denon and pre/pro over digital connection. There is some sort of signal loop that occurs that tells the denon to revert to pcm output only. It is not specific on if this is digital coax, toslink, or HDMI, but I assume it would be HDMI as it is the only one that can communicate both ways.
Anyway, he said he will review the doc's and let me know around noon if this looks like it will fix the problem. This update is strictly not for the public from denon, he wouldn't even let me review the instructions/description to determine if it looks like the right update. All he said was it was system wide and a significant update.
Anyway, I will let you know what he comes up with. I have a feeling he will want me to bring it into the store and have them do the update ($75!) and won't give me copies of the discs...but we shall see...I can be pretty persistent...
Wow. Congrats for being persistent! I'm glad (sort of) to hear that this is actually an issue - vs. something I'm not doing right in the set up menu.
It's hard to believe this hasn't been more "public". It seems every little nuance on almost every other type of component gets it's own thread on the AVS Forum. Maybe it's because so few people actually have this high end player?
Let me know what you find out. If there is a way I could get this fixed, I would gladly pay the $75. I would also be interested in hearing how you go about explaining everything to your local repair shop - and if this would be something acknowledged by Denon for an actual firmware update.
Let me know - and thanks again for all the information!
Kind regards!

We are not to sure what exactly caused all this, but like I said before, it is suspected that it was the upgrade to the D-link 3. There are several, and I mean double digits here, firmware updates and versions for this machine with all the different production runs that it went through.
To make a long story short, you will need to take your machine into a good repair shop, and get them to open it up and do a little investigating to identify the components/firmware’s that you have. Specifically, get them to look at your laser, is it a HOP-1200RN/S or is it a HOP-1200W-B. After that, verify which version of d-link you are running.
In my case I have the older laser, but the newer d-link. For this scenario, change the following:
Gen 6780-6 to 8278-3
Make Day 609D to 801D
Drv 030825 to 060825
The first two have to be done together, the last can be done separately, but it is recommended that you do all 3. Please keep in mind that it is crucial that you identify your equipment properly and use only the correct updates before updating, or you will cause more problems and create a bigger mess.
The other firmware’s that were left alone were:
system 6867-2 no change
scaler 0A04 no change
DSP 6790 no change
C2004 1028 no change
Once this is all done, turn the machine off, then turn it back on, hook up the hdmi, verify your menu is set to multi (norm) under HDMI Digital Interface Setup, then insert a disc, and try it out.
I hope this helps and works for you! Let me know! total charges were just under $100, but it should be less for you as they don't have to spend as much time looking for the problem.
Cheers!
One last thing, is it cool with you if I post this conversation under my post in case others have similar issues?
Congratulations! Wow, I'm impressed with your persistence on this matter. Based on all your notes above, I'm almost scared to take it in and have anyone touch it! Did you just take it to a "local" repair shop that is authorized to fix Denon, or did you have Denon fix it?
I appreciate all the feedback and help. No problem on posting this conversation. I wonder how many DVD-5910 owners actually know of this issue?
I'll keep you updated on what I do, and will let you know if I have any questions.
Thanks again!

I read the 9 page report provided my repair shop and the cause is listed as a fault in the front and back end firmware, updates needed. In the bulletin from Denon, it actually states a conversion issue from bitstream to PCM through digital output. If you tell your repair shop that, they should be able to figure it out fairly easily. Hope things go well for you!

giuseppe001 08-28-08, 09:37 AM Hi,
i have the same problem but here in Italy nobody is able to solve the problem.
Could you pls tell me better and with more detail what have you done to your 5910 ?
Tks & Rgds

locutus2k 02-11-09, 12:16 PM Well, i've just upgraded my A1XV (european model for the 5910) to Denon Link 3 and 1080p, to use it with Denon AVP-1HD new hi-end preamplifier.
Guess what?
Denon link 3 doesn't work. It is recognized by both pre and player but no sound at all.
I also have the LPCM hdmi issue so i was wondering if those issues are related.

Hi,
i am also a viewver of AVMagazine and already talk about this problem.
From DVDA1XVA in hdmi you cannot go out in bitstream.
From DL3 yes, but you have to set the digital output
see this guide:
"I have been writing in about a problem with Denon Link not coming thru with HDMI in the 3910.
Well it does and it does flawlessly.
I was waiting for a call from Denon as I just couldn't figure out what setting I had missed. This is my 3rd Denon Amp and love them.
I was waiting for his call and in my mind going over it and also thinking about the Ethernet cable I need to get to do the firmware update and then it hit me.
I bet I got the Denon Link in the Ethernet slot.
Sure enough I did.
The Denon rep called and we had a good laugh about it as I have been going nuts trying to figure this.
So to the other people that were saying that the two ( AVR 4308 and the Denon 3910 do not react together due to the different types of HDMI) they are wrong.
It does and it does great!!
Settings for Denon 3910
HDMI 2 channel
Denon Link set to 3rd.
Settings for AVR 4308
Input Mode : Digital for the 3910.
It plays SACD, DVD-A and all formats of 5.1 sound.
"
Ciao
locutus2k 02-11-09, 01:16 PM HE'S RIGHT!!!

locutus2k 02-13-09, 05:16 PM New issue: On the player display i can select 1080p but the output signal remains 1080i. TV is a last Gen Kuro, but also with external scaler i had the same issue. No matter what, only 1080i output. I'm beginnin' to think that the service updated the firmware but leave the old board inside:confused:
