Hello all,
I bought my lovely Samsung PS50P96FD plasma in December (07). I discovered immediately the screen had a little chip in it. The retailers replaced it very fast, no problems. The replacement plasma (I'll call it Plasma 2) had a perfect screen, but buzzed very loudly. I put up with it for a few weeks before finally getting the retailer to replace it again. Anyway I now have my third plasma (I'll call it Plasma 3) which is lovely and all seems fine......except one thing.
I have an Xbox 360 premium, which I displayed using a VGA cable on my old 32" 720p LCD TV.
I used the xbox with this VGA cable for a number of weeks perfectly on Samsung Plasma 2, with beautiful results (1080p over VGA), it looked absolutely stunning (but the plasma buzzed something chronic due to vibrating clips inside, removed on replacement model).
With Plasma 3, however, When I try to get the xbox to display resolutions higher than 1280 x 1024, (say 1920 x 1080) it flicks to the correct resolution, and looks lovely, then after a bout 3 seconds the Plasma turns off the display and tries to adjust. Then it comes back with "mode not supported". I have tried it with a Mac mini (using DVI - VGA adapter), and the result was exactly the same. (The Mac mini displays perfectly at 1080p using a DVI to HDMI cable).
I have tried experimenting with going back to component and changing 50Hz - 60Hz combinations, then going back to VGA etc.
The only thing that displays perfectly at 1920 x 1080, is a windows laptop.
I contacted Samsung, and so far 3 different engineers have been to my house since Christmas, and all 3 have replaced the main board in Plasma 3. The result of which is the same. It still doesn't work. I am only convinced it should work, as it worked perfectly with Plasma 2. Incidentally I took a VGA cable to my mates house (he also has an Xbox (HDMI) and a PS50P96FD), and tried the VGA cable on his Xbox and his Plasma. Funnily enough it also didn't work.
I cannot even tell where the problem lies, xbox or Plasma 3? The fact that it worked so well on Plasma 2 is just strange.
The Samsung engineers confirmed that one of the board replacements was identical and had the same firmware version as was in Plasma 2.
In the meantime I am using component, but I know it doesnt look quite as nice as it could and I would like to free up my component ports for something else.
Before anyone diverts me to existing threads covering the issue, I have also already tried the method in the following thread many many times,
avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=866137
I have tried another 2 VGA cables to no avail. I wondered if anyone had any ideas as to what I could try as I am almost ready to give up.
All the best
