INFINITE UNDISCOVERY? Is that what they are going to name it for the US? Odd name.. anyways, the more rpg's the better even if it is a jrpg ;)
AHDTVDiet 05-23-08, 02:23 PM Looks interesting, there are a number of RPGs coming this year that I want to play and this one is on the list.
WilliamR 05-23-08, 02:25 PM At this point, I'll take an RPG I can get.
jason10mm 05-23-08, 03:04 PM Lost Odyssey is doing a lot to turn me back on to JRPGs. Hopefully this one is as good or better. God knows how many discs it is going to be :)
fjtorres 05-23-08, 03:20 PM That is a dangerous release date; two weeks after TOO HUMAN and two weeks before THE FORCE UNLEASHED. It'll be interesting to see how out plays out for them...
danforth 05-23-08, 03:54 PM I've been looking forward to this since it was first announced. I'm a bit worried about the battle system, though.
nnarum23 05-23-08, 04:06 PM I saw the trailer for this and am really excited for it.
Slordak 05-27-08, 12:27 PM I suspect most serious Japanese role-playing gamers would be better served by playing Lost Odyssey than this title if they haven't already. tri-Ace tends to make their games too action-oriented for my tastes, resulting in extremely chaotic play and difficult-to-control combat. As a result, I was not a fan of the Star Ocean games at all.

Exactly my thoughts (3 posts up). However, with the complete lack of JRPGs on this generation's consoles, I'd imagine that most fans of the genre have already played "Lost Odyssey." I was really hoping that the PS3 would offer as many RPGs as its predecessors had during their runs, but it's been a complete let down so far (hopefully that will change).
I'm still looking forward to this game and hoping for the best, but I doubt that I'm going to enjoy the combat system.

I think all three titles are going to disappoint...
[edit] - Okay, after the demo of Force Unleashed I admit it's looking like it will be a fantastic game. I was right about Too Human though!
SlaughterX 05-29-08, 01:50 AM Yeah this game is beautiful, one of my most anticipated this year!
ebackhus 05-29-08, 05:58 PM What's with the PS2-quality textures these days?
Slordak 06-02-08, 11:55 AM Well, you see, Japanese developers have been developing on the PS2 for so long that they're convinced that this is really all that's possible...
ebackhus 06-02-08, 07:00 PM I hope that's just sarcasm. :(
Consoles are well beyond the days of PS2 and can potentially deliver visuals that are on par with modern PC games. Why do the devs skimp? is it really that much more work to make high-rez textures?
Might check it out after I finish Lost Odyssey (about 72 hours in, and still some side quests + DLC waiting)

How is lost odyssey? that game anygood?
Slordak 06-03-08, 10:50 AM Yes. As was mentioned above, Lost Odyssey is probably a good bit better than Infinite Undiscovery is going to be (if that makes any sense). As long as you don't have a problem with turn-based combat (or even prefer it), it's fantastic.
Slordak 08-27-08, 03:56 PM ... And now the IGN review does indeed reveal that Infinite Undiscovery is somewhat lackluster, as predicted. Not terrible, but certainly not great. Personally, I just don't enjoy tri-Ace's game designs. It's like the real-time combat system from the Tales series of games taken to and well beyond its logical extreme, where everything is just massive button mashing and "find the boss' weakness before you die".

Disappointing first review. I'll wait until more reviews come out before deciding if it's worth trying out, though. If I had listened to some of the early critics' reviews of Lost Odyssey, I would've missed out on one of the great RPGs of the past several years. The user scores are tracking a little bit higher, too, and I tend to weigh those equally if not more when it comes to a game's playability.
I've usually been impressed with tri-Ace's offerings, although I agree that their implementation of a real-time combat system doesn't appeal to me as much as those in other RPGs.
AHDTVDiet 08-27-08, 07:48 PM Actually after reading the review there was not much negative in it to me. He used both compelling and intriguing when talking about the story (yes I did take them slightly out of context but it seems he found something compelling and intriguing and not boreing)and his first paragraph ends as follows "Infinite Undiscovery, while enjoyable, is nothing special."
Well, OK then, so it's not a "special" RPG...its not the greatest...are all games supposed to be? If it can be just an "enjoyable" game to me for 35-40 hours then thats all I really need it to be.
Johnsteph10 08-27-08, 08:17 PM I think that game review sites just don't "get" most JRPGs. :(
If it isn't Western in origin, it just can't be good in their eyes.....
Slordak 08-28-08, 09:36 AM The question is... Have you played the Star Ocean games?
If I had to guess, I would guess that this game will have a lot in common with them. In particular, the lack of any real control over your fellow party members, coupled with the frantic real-time combat. I tried playing Star Ocean: 'Till the End of Time on the PS2 and eventually gave up due to some serious problems with encounter balancing, party members doing silly things and getting killed in combat, and the nonsensical "inventing" system required to get most of the better equipment.
SlaughterX 09-02-08, 05:02 PM So anyone else pick this up today?

Best Buy LE foil cover on the left, GS (and Amazon) preorder foil print with DLC code.
I'll post some impressions later...
talyler 09-02-08, 05:14 PM No! I might buy it tonight. I'm looking forward to playing it.
My pre-order is in and I'm picking it up after work and playing it.
Will post impressions tomorrow. Updated first post for more of an official thread feel.
AHDTVDiet 09-02-08, 06:47 PM I picked this up today but I am 20 hours in Tales of Vesperia so I guess I should finish that, plus I picked up Mercenaries and my boss is awaiting my impressions on that. AND I turned off the Tenn\UCLA game last night after the interception at halftime, but luckily I DVRd it + 1 hour so I have to watch that now and see how this supposed "great game" played itself out...because UCLA QB looked like crp in the first half. So much to do, so little time.
I'm not far enough in for a detailed impression you need to get past the first 1 and half hours of the beginning of the game which I just passed.
So far the music is great, the VA is ok. It has some weird thing were some of the cut-scenes aren't voiced and it doesn't say who is talking. Those are few and don't last long. There is some slowdown in the battles with a lot of creatures and party members on screen. The kids aren't as bad as other kids in JRPG's.
number1laing 09-03-08, 04:59 PM is it really that much more work to make high-rez textures?
Is that a serious question? Of course it is.

LOL. Tennessee fan?
Twylight 09-03-08, 05:01 PM I did a mini review in here for everyone. 7/10

Nope. Not really a fan of either team but I guess I was rooting for UCLA since they were the underdog. But it really looked like UCLA QB was overmatched so I assumed Tenn would run up the score in the second half.... guess not. It was a great game.,......unless your a kicker.
SlaughterX 09-08-08, 01:27 AM So I beat the first disc a few hours ago. It was fairly short, took me less than 9 hours, I'm guessing the majority of the game is on the second disc. Anyway right now the game is a bit disappointing to me, it just feels incomplete. I don't know why SE would rush it considering the time of year it is, but it really wouldn't have benefit from more development time.
Also I feel this game would have worked better as an online game. It's cool having several different parties all fighting at once, but you have so little control over everyone else it just makes you long for more.
Anyway here's hoping the next half is better...
