In what way does it look like crap?
How is it connected?
Have you tried a calibration disc?
That player is about eight years old. Technology has gotten better since then.
I've been pleased with my Oppo players, but without knowing what you are seeing or what improvement you expect, it would be hard to recommend one to you.

Ok i realize the player is old and their has been significant improvements in technology, but has anyone compared side by side a non up-converting dvd player to a Oppo dv-980 or a similar up-converting player, how big of a improvement is their?

I moved from a 1999-era Toshiba with 480i component to several Oppos, including the 980. I would say there is a definite improvement; no A/B switching required to see it.
But it depends on your viewing preferences, how far you sit from the display, and if you are calibrating the display to get the best results.

how big of a improvement is their?there will definitely be some improvement in picture-quality with the Oppo DV-980H, and even moreso with the (new) DV-983H. I would go for either unit (preferably the DV-983H).

I came from a ten year old Panasonic (pretty nice player) to a Toshiba A35 HD DVD player (a very good upscaler for SD disks) which I rate close to a friends 980 in image quality. The difference is rather startling. If I didn't have both the A35 and a Panasonic BD30 Blu Ray player I'd get a 980 (or maybe the new 983.)
How much improvement? You'll easily see better image quality but, if you look at all the various opinions on these boards, you'll see that it's in the eye of the beholder.
Most sellers all charge bust-out retail but there's a seller on Amazon who offers new 980s for around $140. Not Amazon but you're protected by their polices.

I might be able to tell you tomorrow as I just got email notice my new 980H was delivered today. I have an older Sony hooked up to my new 50PX80U and although the viewing is okay it's definitely not what I want.
I ordered mine straight from Oppo, as the prices were the same pretty much everywhere.

I recently purchased a 980 from Amazon. $169 shipped. And got it in 2 days.:) The first thing I noticed was the manual was in english only. Thats really good, because I can only read english.:D Just thought I'd throw that one out there.
Anyways, The audio (multi-channel and 2 channel) cd is better than I was expecting from a sub $200 universal player. I have a pretty big HT system, and the 980 seems to be fitting in very well. I have a HDMI cable on order for my FP, but the picture looks great with just componet video. 480P. I haven't got a chance to hook up the HDMI to my Samsung plasma yet. Hopefully I will get to it in a couple of days. But I expect the PQ to be really good. It's main use will be for the FP though.
