I recently upgraded my DishNetwork package, and the installer came out today to connect my VIP622 HD DVR. Before he even entered the house, he noticed that I was using a Terk 42 18" Clip-on Antenna to tune in Local channels.

He said that antenna won't work with HD service and the VIP 622. He even called his boss and said that the power would "fry" my antenna. I suggested running a dedicated line from the antenna to the OTA input on the back of the VIP622, be he declined, and didn't even connect a thing.

Does anyone have a set-up like this, if so, do you have a wiring layout of how I can get HD programming with DishNet, plus HD OTA Locals using the Terk-42 antenna.

I called DishNetwork to complain, and they are sending another technician out Monday, but I'm affraid he'll tell me the same thing. The tech. on the phone said he didn't see any problem with connecting the Terk Antenna to the VIP 622??

Sounds like you had a lazy installer that didn't want to deal w/ additional diplexing.

One of my coworkers that has DirectTV says this no longer works w/ DirectTV as they use ALL the bandwidth in their coax. With them you would need a separate coax run from the antenna to the receiver. AFAIK, you should still be able to do this with Dish.

Try asking this on dbstalk.com (AVS sister site) and satelliteguys.us as well.

How can a receiver "fry" an antenna? Even though it's amplified, I don't see it.

I'm not anywhere near a Electric guru... but I have seen various models which just bring a dedicated coax into the OTA port on the VIP622. Question though would that then be relayed to the TV2?

No, I use an amplified set of rabbit ears on my 622. That is in a sense dedicated coax, but the antenna isn't outside. Live OTA HD is not viewable on TV2--period. OTA is just another feed just like the two feeds from your dish(es). The 622 can record 2 HD or SD streams from the satellite and one ATSC stream from OTA all at the same time.

When our 622 was installed, I suggested an OTA antenna as well. I'm guessing that Dish has also found a way to utilize all bandwidth. This would be the reason the installers declined. There are at least 3 items that look like diplexers installed prior to the coax entering the 622. Could the last be a quadplexer? I've never tried to view OTA via the 622 on TV2. I'd think that should work somehow, but don't know.

After 3 DishNet techs, and 2 weeks of waiting. I finally will get HD Service this Sunday, and yes the TERK 42 is compatable with the VIP622.

1st the tech wouldn't get on my roof to access the existing dish.
2nd it was raining and OSHA prevented him from accessing the dish.
Now this Sunday (weather permitting) they will swap out the LNBs on my existing Dish500, and throw up another Dish at 61.5 for HD Service, and finally I can rejoice.

Fingers crossed for nice sunny conditions as it seems that's all the technicians will work with.
