View Full Version : What is the point...Harry Potter ABC Family 4:3?
TimHuey 05-25-08, 10:20 PM Whats the point of putting a Chopped up show on a high definition channel then saying "it's been formated to fit your screen?" All HDTVs I know of are widescreen. Even if there are a few that aren't the vast majority are.
The whole presentation just blew monkey chunks.
They don't have an HD transfer, as yet, so SD is what we get.
DuaneAA 05-26-08, 02:09 AM Pretty sad. Maybe I could loan them my bluray copy that I have had for what? Six months? What a joke some of these networks are!

It's more of a joke that you think it's that simple.
bicker1 05-26-08, 07:06 AM Ken: Is this for a certain set of rebroadcasts? or are the original episodes like that too?
It's more of a joke that you think it's that simple.
Because ???? Technical issues, financial issues, or (gasp) contractual issues ???:rolleyes::rolleyes:
What???
I saw 4 of the HP movies on ABC in HD, perhaps your tunning into a different Channel.. was it on regular Sunday ABC movies? That was a few weeks back.. they ran a movie a week.

What, did I need to add a whole string of smiley faces to indicated that I was being facetious?
It just annoys me the same way trying to add hard drive storage space at work does. I mean when the hard drive on the PC I use at home for a DVR gets full, I run to Best Buy and for a couple hundred bucks add a terabyte external drive. But at the big company where I work it takes a purchase order signed almost by god to do what should these days be a petty cash item.

Potentially all of the above. And there is no way in hell a network would put a Blu-Ray disc to air. DVCProHD or D5 (and one D5 tape cost about as much as a Blu-Ray player).

I believe the problem was he was watching ABC Family. Some carriers have the HD feed (not DirecTV yet though), but from what I've read elsewhere, there isn't a lot of actual HD content there yet.
They must be in it for just the ad revinue.
Junk HD channel in that it has no real HD.
bicker1 05-26-08, 05:06 PM They must be in it for just the ad revinue. There is a reason why they call it commercial television. They're supposed to be in it just for the advertising revenue.

I still don't understand why some new HD channels don't broadcast any HD content. What is the point? It takes up needed bandwidth that providers could use for something else.
I haven't seen any HD content on ABC Family, AMC, or Disney.
I do realize that everything won't be in HD, but films their parent company/s have shown in HD should be available. If they don't have contract rights for the new channel, why broadcast it yet?

bicker1 05-27-08, 06:36 PM Of the 35-36 HD channels we have here, only one doesn't have any HD programming, and it is a local broadcast channel.
Just because someone hasn't seen any HD content on those channels doesn't mean there isn't any, or won't be any, broadcast on those channels soon.

DirecTV doesn't have the HD feed for ABC Family or AMC yet, but there are a number of shows that I've seen on Disney HD.

For the same reasons many of the other new HD networks are mostly SD at this time.
- Just getting on the air in HD is very, very expensive, but is also necessary as soon as possible. A placeholder in HD now is a guarantee of not being shut out later. This falls under the old Tower Of Power theory: 'There is only so much oil in the ground'. Translation: 'There is only so much bandwidth on our system(s)'.
- The cost of accumulating HD programming is secondary to the cost of getting on the air in HD.
- After making the conversion to HD, the budget can be turned to HD programming.
- Just as most other HD networks have done, the pattern is set. First get on the air, and worry about asking forgiveness later, as programming expands.
Marcus Carr 05-28-08, 08:39 AM I haven't seen any HD content on ABC Family, AMC, or Disney.
AMC shows a few HD movies every week.
I haven't seen any HD content on ABC Family, AMC, or Disney.
All of ABC Family's new original programming is broadcast in HD. I have watched several HD episodes of Greek and have also seen Kyle XY and Wildfire.
The only Disney HD is have seen are the High School Musical movies.
So...the HD is there, but there's not much of it yet.

Sure, the same night I post this, I saw HD content on each of the above channels. Obviously, I was wrong.
Ken, thanks for the additional information!
