I'm having so much trouble finding one that is 16" or smaller that isn't a total portable unit. My bedroom armoire needs it to be that size. Never had a problem with my DIRECTV DVR's or anything else fitting in there, but everything I see at Best Buy or Circuit City is about 16.8 inches or wider which just won't fit.
HELP. Must be an HD upconvert capable as well with one HDMI output. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The Helios H4000 is only 14 inches wide. It upconverts up to 1080p over HDMI and component, too. However, it is noted as having handshake issues with some tv brands, and it is quirky at times. I own one and it does a decent job of upscaling, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it because of its quirkiness. For example, it gets very hot in standby mode so I turn the power off by the switch on the back. And for some strange reason, you sometimes have to go into the menu and reset some of the settings. It's as if it has trouble holding things in memory. But that may be because I hard power it off. Anyway, if you don't mind the quirks, it is reasonably priced and, as I said earlier, it does a pretty good job at upconversion.

It uses Mediatek chipset which is well-respected for HDMI upconversion to 720p/1080i. It was avail. at Bestbuy for about $60 but now discontinued. Try Epay for a used model.

Helios brand is very unreliable in many opinions including mine.
