I could use a little help from a DirecTV customer. I've searched the forums but can't get an answer.

Currently I'm with Dish but I'm shopping around because:
1. The covert canceling of Voom channels without notification ticked me off
2. My local phone company says if I bundle the phone+DSL+DirecTV they'll give me a discount

The PLUS HD DVR package should = Choice Xtra + DVR + HD

Simple question: How much would my monthly bill be (NOT the initial promo offer) if I wanted "PLUS HD DVR" with two additional normal receivers (3 total TVs)?

Sounds simple but I'm getting DRASTICALLY different answers from the DirecTV rep and the phone company rep. The phone company tells me $60 ($50 + $10 for two extra rooms) and claim that is not a promo offer that expires (i.e. doesn't end after 12 months). DirecTV tells me $82.99.

I realize the phone company is telling me I'll save by bundling but $22.99?! Seems too good to be true. Something tells me I'm not getting an apples to apples equation.

I have DirecTV's PLUS HD DVR package and it would break down like this for you:

Choice Xtra PLUS HD DVR = $72.99
2 extra SD DVRs ($4.99/ea) = $ 9.98 (note there is no extra charge for DVR boxes vs. non-DVR so might as well get DVRs)

So the total would about about $83/month.

New customers however can get some sick deals though so I'd call up DTV and push for one.

Currently with Dish I'm Top-200 (the middle package) with HD, DVR & 3 TVs total for $65.

Isn't the Choice xtra considered the middle tier for DirecTV? Looking at the web site it looks like they have Family, Choice, Choice xtra & Premier. Dish has Family, Top-150, Top-200 & Top-250. I was trying to compare apples to apples and thought Top-200 to Choice xtra was comparable.

D* Choice Xtra is more like Top-250 on E* but with D* you get your locals with the price unlike E* w/ the extra $4.99. With the E* HD or HD DVR receivers though, they are built to handle 2 tvs at once, one being in SD res though, so that is why E* doesn't charge for a 2nd receiver unless you want programming for 3 tvs and up. I believe they charge 6 or 7 dollars extra.

I'm a brand new old customer of D* and getting the HD DVR pkg w/ 3 standard receivers for a total of $65, of course this is a promo price.

Remember also, that $83 doesn't include the HD Xtra Pack (should you also want that). Further, don't forget the $99 upfront fee for the HD DVR and the necessary two year commitment!

drifter77, I didn't realize the charge for additional SD standard and DVR boxes was the same. Interesting! Quite a plus actually.

$83? Yikes!

Compare that with Comcast though. Over half the HD channels DirecTV has and it's $68.95 for digital, $13.95 for a HD DVR, and $6.95 for every other HD box after that. For 3 boxes, that comes out to $96.80 a month.

Question: The savings is over 24 months. I've read that the contract is for 24 months. Does this mean that my contract is up at the same time my AAA savings ends? The obvious answer seems to be "Yes" but I'm just checking that there isn't something that says the contract timer starts when normal (i.e. no discounts) prices kick in (i.e. month 25).

By my calculation I can save:
$240 -AAA (24 X $10)
$216 - DirecTV national deal (12 X $18)
$144 - Cincinnati Bell (save $6 a month by bundling with phone/DSL line = 24 x $6)
$50 - Referral discount

Total savings = $650 over 24 months. After figuring in the $100 start up cost for a HD DVR with normal price being $83 (Choice xtra, HD, DVR, 3 rooms) it works to an average monthly rate of $60.08.

So I'd save roughly $5 a month for 24 months over Dish (Total of $120 for 24 months). Seems like a lot of work to line all of this up for $5 a month but I'm game.

National Deal is at $23.00 per month for 12 months now but you never know when it will change
