Anybody build a theater with home theater seating that included a hide-a-bed?

What did you use?

You could build a Murphy style bed into the wall and integrate it into the decor. This would be easy with fabric panels I suppose.

There's always a sleeper sofa too.

This gallery shows the only murphy bed I can remember. There was a thread, but I couldn't find it.

That said, the aero bed that goes to the height of a real bed (about $250 MSRP for Queen) is actually very comfortable. Moreso IMO than any other airmattress I have slept on.

EDIT - here is the thread:

FWIW I have owned/used two sleeper sofa's and slept on many more some from cheap manufactures and a few from from reputable manufactures and I can honestly say there was not one of them that was comfortable to sleep on and only a couple were actually comfortable to sit on for extended periods. I would go with the murphy bed if you could.

Just my .02

Thanks guys -- I actually considered a Murphy Bed, but for some reason my wife has a "thing" against them -- don't ask me why. So, I am actually looking into theater seating that can convert into a bed.

How about just a standard sleeper sofa in the front row? Assumming you've got the distance between the front row and screen, it should work.

We were in the same situation as we converted our only guess room into a theater. During the duration of shopping around, it came to 3 options: Sofa bed, air bed or futon. Due to budget, we were moving more toward the futon, but things took a complete turn after went shopping. Basically we sat/sleep on tons of sofa bed and futon. We felt they were either not comfortable as a bed or crappy as a seat. Futon were the worst. If I actually had to choose, I would go with one of the sofabed that also has recliner.

Long story short, we end up with theater seats that fully recline, so guess can sleep on that or take on of the kids bedroom.

When renovating our basement which included a home theater we did build a custom Murphy Bed in another room. For our renovation design, my wife wanted and designed a "craft" room which would double as a guest bedroom. It turned out great and I'll post pictures when I get home tonight. We bought the murphy bed mechanism from a vendor and had the cabinet maker build around it.

Yes, please post pics. We are considering doing a murphy bed in the kids playroom. Can you also tell me which vendor for the mechanism?

I snapped a few photos of the wall unit in our "Craft Room" as promised. We had the idea to design this built-in cabinet into a recessed area that existed in the bare basement space. There was a large steel i-beam that tops off that area. That was a challenge since we needed to find a relatively low (smaller) Murphy Bed than the standard sizes.

Here's the first photo showing the bed in the stowed position with the doors closed.

Here's the final photo with the bed pulled down.

We've had a few guests use this room since we completed the basement and haven't had any complaints as far as the comfort factor of the bed. Prior to this we used air mattresses which are just a pain in the butt.

We bought the Murphy Bed mechanism online from MurphyBedsDirect.com (http://www.murphybedsdirect.com).

After looking at the photos I also just realized I never put the handles on the doors that conceal the Murphy Bed. Oh well now I have something to do this weekend.

Good luck with your concept.

These Fortress seats are kinda low profile

This one from Fortress is a convertible but it's very expensive at $6-7k.

RobZ -- did those beds roll out from inside those theater seats? If so, that is exactly the kind of thing for which I am looking!

No that is actually not convertible. See the page: http://www.fortresseating.com/productpage.php?prod_id=25

Fortress makes some of the best seating around (for HT use) but you definitely pay for it. They custom build as well. I'd imagine a nice convertible leather sofa would be 1/10 th the cost of Fortress seating. I've seen nice leather convertibles at $1500-$2000.

If it were my choice, I'd go with a cozy $200 air mattress. Convertibles, etc. are never comfy.

The winter 2006 edition of home electronic ideas has a theater (that also happens to be on the cover of the magazine) where the second row is a sleep sofa. You'd never know it looking at it as they look like more theater seats....however, if I was sleeping at your house, I'd much rather sleep in a murphy bed than a pull out.

I agree with you. Believe me, I was pushing for a Murphy Bed, but my wife actually nixed the idea. I don't know why, but she's got something against Murphy Beds. I know, it's weird.

Did that issue of Home Electronic Ideas say where they got those theater seats that fold out into a bed?

No, I believe it just said who the designer/builder was....I'll look again tonight and see if it says anything more...

Even the name of the designer/builder would be handy -- thanks!
