I'm interested in investing some money into a new upconverting DVD player but I having some trouble on making a final decision. I have decided to steer clear of Blu-Ray for now and just go with a good 1080p upconverting player. I think I have narrowed it down to two that I like. The Pioneer Elite DV-48AV or an OPPO player. Can anyone else help me out here? Maybe give suggestions on which to go with or maybe even a different player that is not listed. Please let me know.

BTW, I just want a good 1080p player with good surround audio and a very good, clean and clear picture. My surround sound is run off of my HDTV via an optical cable. The TV that I am using is a 42" Vizio LCD 1080p HDTV. So I will connect the DVD player via an HDMI cable.

Thanks in advance!

I recommend an Oppo. Probably a DV-980H, unless you're a hardcore videophile, then you might consider a DV-981HD or the DV-983H. I have a 42" HP Plasma. I tried the DV981HD and experienced some macroblocking issues due to the Faruoudja chip. Exchanged it for the DV-980H and I could'nt be happier. It's hooked up via HDMI direct to TV, and Digital Opt out to my receiver. The picture from the 980H appeared to be a little sharper than the 981H. Good product and Customer service. Great price too!

macroblocking from faroudja (oppo 981) and lcd combo shouldnt be an issue.
with a 42" lcd set either 980/981 should work well.

Does anyone have a personal opinion on the Pioneer Elite that I mentioned? I can get a brand new/sealed one with the 2 year manufacturer warranty for only $150 shipped.

So you're saying for the price to go with an OPPO player not for the price that I mentioned to go with the Pioneer Elite player, right?

here is my story. i got elite dvd from sound advice for 78$ reg. price 299$ the picture quality was same as on my 8 years old denon that rund tru compnent. the reason why thay are so cheap is the production date is 2006 and thay are old .The PQ was really bad and fuzzy , there was no difirance in 480i and 1080i via HDMI. I returned my today and ordered oppo insted.

With a 2006 build date are you sure you got a DV-48AV and not a DV-46AV
