View Full Version : Bernies basement
maarass 05-28-08, 06:56 PM Hi all ! I've been a member here for quite some time, ever since we built our new home. Been lurking over the years just enjoying the threads and pics ! Finally getting around to doing up the basement and actually have already begun the home gym. I'm still in the palnning stages and probably will be until it finished. LOL
Okay, here a drawing of what I'm going to do, I'll post actual photos soon !
ps. I am getting sooooooo many ideas from everyone here it's mind boggleing.
BIGmouthinDC 05-28-08, 07:27 PM Having built a wide open plan theater, next time I will do everything to create more of a walled in dedicated space.
Better surround sound field, more flexibility for lighting in non-theater spaces and easier to contain the sound from the rest of the house.
Also looking at the plan where is the refreshment area? Some might call it a bar.
maarass 05-29-08, 10:58 AM Thanks for the reply. I need to update my drawing. I am indeed enclosing the theater room !! I think the refreshment area will be under the stairs as it's plenty big for a fridge and microwave. Great ideas ! Thanks.
whiskey > work 05-29-08, 12:42 PM dang, that's a huge space. Good luck with that!
maarass 05-29-08, 01:50 PM Yeah big space ! I'm working on one part at a time.'
Here's the revised drawing.
Looks like a great space! I'd love to see the house that sits on top of it. Do you have any pictures? Also do you have any drawings that include dimensions. I am having a hard time getting an idea of the scale.
One thing to watch for is the area around the pool table needs to be fairly large for a clear playing field. I have an old 8' reg table and I am still trying to find an arrangement where the play field doesn't completely consume my largest basement room.
With Regulation 57" cues...
Table Size ------ Room Size
7' Home -------- 13'8" x 16'10"
8' Regulation ---- 14'2" x 17'10"
81/2' Oversized - 14'4" x 18'2"
9' Tournament -- 14'8" x 18'10"
Now that being said items/furniture that are below or only slightly higher than the table edge can infringe on this area... Unless you are a purest. :D

Personally, I would go with a shuffleboard table where that skeeball table is (I recently bought one for my basement, so I am very biased).
Also with regard to the bathroom area, that small hallway seems like wasted space to me. Couldn't you enlarge the bathroom and readjust the doors?

Thanks for the specs on the pool table. Mine is a 7.5' nothing special one. I'm beginning to think I made my gym area too big and thus sacrificing square footage. This link goes to the architects website. They actually used my pics. If you click on the rendering you will see "additional images". All are mint except the first "front photograph".

Yeah I like shuffle board or even the long bowling ones. My wife is stuck on skee ball and I have one lined up for a sweet deal !! I did think about nixing the small hallway as it would give me more space. But the feel seems good to me, kinda more thought out. Still throwing things around as I have to move some mechanicals. Right now it all full of stoage shelves so current pics would not give an idea.
Very nice house Bernie... The unique floor plan gives you a very fun shape to play with in the basement. I would personally devote more space to the HT and Game room and less to the gym.... Based on a strict personal usage study in my own home. :D

HAHA. Yeah I don't even use it, it's for my wife and kids. I go to a commercial gym, but it sure does look nice. I'll post some pics here shortly of it. I already framed the wall though. I see you have a awsome plan in the works. I think I'll use sketch up ... seems that's popular around here !
maarass 05-30-08, 09:56 PM i'm resizing pic now. But here's a neat photo to share. I know wee all like looking at construction pics. This is the foundation and you can see the outline like in my drawings. What's weird is it looks so small untile the walls were poured.
How do I get the pic to appear in the post itself ??
mn_hokie 05-30-08, 10:09 PM Bernie,
Looks like a nice plan. You should embed your images in your post so they pop up while scrolling.

I agree, do I need to host them on another site instead of attaching them to the post ... anyone ???
Stew4msu 05-31-08, 01:11 AM Yes, you need to host them somewhere. If you don't have your own webpage, you could use photobucket to host them. Then just post them here with image tags.
put the link in here
mn_hokie 05-31-08, 01:20 AM I put mine out on Flickr.

free = popular :D
maarass 06-01-08, 05:20 PM Hi all. I'm going to embed these pic in the posts. I have webspace on my internet provider. But here's the first drawing with a few dimensions.
I might have an issue. I think the home theater room might be too small ??!! I want to keep it in the same place as it's perfect for it (3 conc. walls and minimal light). I'll I really need is seating for 6 too. Hmm. First row would be approx. 8.5 foot away from the screen. Is this too small a distance ? I don't think a 100" screen would work ... something samller. Walls are already framed for the gym and I have too much equipment to make it smaller. Besides I like the size as it is. I thought about bringing the rear of the theater to the back of the stairway space but I have that damn column in the way.
maarass 06-03-08, 03:42 PM Let see if it works. YES !

benson peculiar 06-04-08, 09:07 PM I really like the layout of your basement, it's totally different than what I've ever seen before.
About the HT being too small. What if you squared off that corner? You'd be able to keep the skee ball with this idea! Please excuse the poor MS Paint skills, but something like this...

The red square would be a riser for the second row, and you could either leave the side by the front row open or put a table there.
Any way to push back your front row to about 10 feet? That's right at the edge of suggested distance for a 100" screen.
Looking forward to this build!

Hey great suggestion ! Now if the rear seats are further back, would that make it difficult for rear speakers , sound wise and that kind of thing ? I would also have to sacrifice double doors into the theater but I would gain some square footage. Decisions decisions.

I would think that you'd be fine. Maybe some in-walls or some have done in-ceilings for the rear surrounds that they installed in their soffit. Maybe a good pair of dipole speakers would help with the proximity issue.
I would also have to sacrifice double doors into the theater but I would gain some square footage. Decisions decisions.
I think if you get a big enough single door you'll never miss the double. Plus, it's easier to keep sound from escaping around just one door.
Glad I could help!
Laters.
mn_hokie 02-17-11, 10:17 AM Hey Bernie,
How is the build progressing?
