hi,

this is probably gonna end up a long winded post,if it does i apologize in advance :)

right, ive bought myself an eyeone probe as recommended in the excellent greyscale tutorial by kal,but i dont want to just jump str8 in without fully understanding what im doing, ive just spent the last hour in the service menu on my widescreen 32" crt which is hd ready (first in the uk :D),ive located all the controls required for doing the greyscale calibration which are listed as: cut of r,g,b - drive r,g,b - bright, cont, color, hue - by gain ry angl.am i correct in thinking cut is rgb high end and drive rgb low end? and does anyone know what the by gain and ry angl controls are?also should i set the bright, cont, color and hue settings in the service menu rather than the regular osd?

right this is where i get confused lol,im using an xbox360 and an xbox 1 as my main sources, when i was messing about with the service menus i was doing it with different video systems (ntsc and pal)and resolutions (480i,480p,1080i)through component input and scart rgb,at 1080i the xbox 360 sets my tv to display ntsc all the time even when playing pal games,at 480p it sets it to pal even if im watching r1 ntsc dvds,so i changed the cut and drive defaults at 1080i ntsc to see if it affected the 480p pal settings which it didnt,so am i right in thinking ive got to set greyscale 3 times?once for 1080i ntsc once for 480p pal and once for 480i pal/ntsc?if so ill use the free hd setup disc located on these forums for the 1080i ntsc greyscale, but can anyone recommend a pal sd calibration dvd to use for the 480p and 480i settings?i have dve pal and avia ntsc,i looked into getgray but they say its not suitable for crts, and i cant really afford to buy dve pro.

thanks for takin the time to read this
any help is greatly appreciated
regards

Greetings

Cuts = cut off = low end. Dark stuff.
Drivers = bright stuff.

The RY BY stuff are color decoder controls (red push et al)

Correct. You had the cuts/drives backwards. I've added a few lines to make it clearer in the guide. Good luck with it! Let me know if you have any questions! I'm still adding new hints/tips and other things as time permits so check back every once and a while. :)

hi guys thanks for the replys,

ive just been lookin through the forums and came across a fix for avia when using component video inputs, could i use this with my 360 to set greyscale at 480p even tho avia is ntsc and my tv is displaying pal,or does ntsc/pal only matter when it comes to colors?

thanks in advance

The D65 point for HD, SD NTSC, and PAL are all the same so yes - you can use any test disc to set greyscale. It's only the primaries (and subsequent secondaries) that differ between the three gamuts.

can anyone recommend a pal sd calibration dvd to use for the 480p and 480i settings?i have dve pal and avia ntsc,i looked into getgray but they say its not suitable for crts, and i cant really afford to buy dve pro.

GetGray will work fine for calibrating your grayscale on a CRT. The only place it is not suitable for a CRT is that it does not include specific patterns to check for things such as blooming when setting contrast. But if all you want to use it for is to measure/set your grayscale and measure/set your color/tint, it'll work fine. In addition, HCFR has it's own PAL calibration dvd. Finally, it seems that you could just use the AVS HD709 disc to calibrate all 3 different settings since I assume that you can manually change the output (480p, 480i, 1080i) on the 360.

hope this helps,

Yes, there are likely a TON of calibration discs that'll work perfectly fine. I haven't (and do not intend) to try them all given that sub-$20 and free ones exist that work fine.
