View Full Version : Canadian Home Theater Underway!
cdnhometheater 05-29-08, 05:59 PM Well, its finally underway!
Been wanting to put together a Home theater room for several years now, and last year was finally able to purchase my first home with a nice unfinished basement.
Before I get posting pics of progress, I thought I'd run some of my Sketchup pics by a few members to make sure that this qualifies as a 'dedicated' home theater room and I'm posting in the right area. (the theater area and concession/rec area are open as you can see in the sketches)
The Desired Result...

I'd also like to give props to this amazing forum...the amount of ideas, information, and inspiration here is second to none.
That being said, I welcome any and all ideas, comments, suggestions...
Thanks!

As mentioned, finally got to buy my first home last year, and the home theater has been a dream for a long time.
After some debate as to whether to do a fully enclosed room or not, I opted to do a 'semi' enclosed area as the space to put the dedicated room in would have been to small. (I've got 5 siblings who all live close, and we are all huge movie buffs so they'll frequently be times where I'd need to seat 8+ guests - the room would have been a 6 seater max).
Anyways, I'll start with some pics of the unfinished area.

Couple of issues to sort out...
I put a deposit down on an Integra 9.8 about a month ago. Called the dealer yesterday, and he indicated that it's going to be AT LEAST another month, and further to that, they would be in limited quantity - I may not even get one!
So, I'm not sure where that leaves me. Supposedly the Marantz AV8003 is out the end of June, and cost/spec wise it seems very similar. Perhaps make a deposit on both and see who wins the race????
Other than that, I'll likely scoop up a ps3, a panasonic DMPBD30, a shaw DCT 6200 cable box, and a few other goodies.
More to come!

Sure is. Good to see another Canadian hard core HT fanatic. I like the layout. Can't wait to see it progress.
I really like your design and sketchups. Where do you plan to mount the surrounds? It looks like there will be three walls... Keep the photos coming!
Yes you are doing great so far.
very nice looking. Any shots of the back of the room in sketchup?

Here's a shot from the screen in 'two point perspective' view:

You can kind of make out the left and right sides and rear surround behind the projector. The opening is a landing area with stairs behind the rear wall (great spot for an AV rack ) , and the other areas are bedroom/bathroom/storage.
Being as all the front speakers will be hidden, it's a bummer that the surrounds will be visible. Again, disadvantages of an open room.
Will get some more pics up shortly!
What are the two white objects on the left hand wall that you have showing reflections?

Those would be windows...fun.
I have been reading some info on window plugs and have some ideas kicking around designs wise. In any event, the plan is to 'plug' them.
Here's an idea I drafted up that is a combo plug/multiband trap that matches the other traps on the walls:http://www.canadianhometheater.com/images/windowplugs.jpg
If anyone else has window plug ideas I'd love to hear 'em.
Thanks!

And now for a couple of questions if you'll indulge...
1.) It was suggested that I put stainless steel to face the stage bottom bulk head face. While this no doubt would look 'cool', I'm sure something this light reflective could be distracting during movie viewing. Any other thoughts?
2.) Carpet - Grey, or off white / beige ?
Thanks in advance!
oman321 06-06-08, 08:49 AM Wow nice progress...
Could probably have saved on a couple of the coats of red if you had tinted your primer a dark grey. Oh well to late now, but it looks great.
Do you have any carpet samples to show us the colors your mentioning?
Xnay on the stainless is what I say.
forumworx 06-06-08, 11:35 AM Nice.
What kind of pot lights are you using?
Size?
Type of Bulb?
Did you insulate all your ceilings?
JBUNGIE 06-06-08, 01:27 PM Looks great! You have done a great job of making you vision come to life.
cobolisdead 06-06-08, 04:45 PM 2.) Carpet - Grey, or off white / beige ?
I'd go with a gray colored carpet, as it will go with that red a lot better than the beige or off-white.
Off white would make it look like the bathroom in The Shining.
cdnhometheater 06-10-08, 02:25 PM Off white would make it look like the bathroom in The Shining.
lol....good eye:

I've decide to go with a grey berber. Next up is whether to have the trim on the columns red or white. See examples below...

White Trim:

Tiling is being done to the bathroom and bar area with carpet to be completed the end of the week - it's getting close!
