View Full Version : Samsung BD-UP5000 Firmware 1.3 Released Report BUGS\FIXES
autobot 07-22-08, 02:47 PM I just bought a floor model of this player from BB. They didnt have a remote (just ordered one and hasnt come yet) so I cant check the FW version. I assume it is not up to date. After skimming through this thread I have to ask: Should I NOT upgrade to 1.3 when my remote comes?
definitely
I was on the fence for the longest and went ahead and did it its well worth it.
I just turned off the 24fps and have not missed it for one second.
Foxbat121 07-22-08, 02:53 PM OK, I had to ask, because it seems some people are having issues playing titles, especially Fox movies. My seems to be OK on the Fox titles... When I got it home and opened up the tray, the BD version of ID4 was in it. :D
The menu comes up just fine, but without the remote, I cant tell it to play.
Also, Im going analog out to my receiver. AM I correct in assuming that DD TrueHD will pass OK, but not DTS HD-MA?
Firmware 1.3 is a must have.
You SHOULD really consider a Harmony Universal so you don't need to worry missing a remote anymore.
Analog will give you DD TureHD but not DTS-HD HR or MA (you still get DTS core).
Jerry Curl 07-22-08, 09:53 PM Yeah, I showed my wife the prices of those and she laughed at me.
JazzGuyy 07-23-08, 06:17 AM She'll stop laughing when she sees how easy a Harmony makes it to operate everything. Women are usually the biggest fans of the Harmony. Also, if you shop around, there are pretty heavy discounts available on Harmony remotes. You don't necessarily need the Harmony One to do everything well. The 880 works fine and I have seen it recently for under $100.
Foxbat121 07-23-08, 08:02 AM Yeah, I showed my wife the prices of those and she laughed at me.
That's your mistake. Show her how much the remote makes her life easier not how much it costs :) Besides, there are many deals on Harmonys on the 'Net. You don't have to spend $200 for one. I bought one from Costco for $120 (Harmony 720) and one from Best Buy for $50 after coupons and discounts (Harmony 550). My wife and kids are very happy with both remotes.
tsteph69 07-23-08, 02:47 PM I just picked this player up yesterday and updated the firmware immediately to 1.3. Just curious about the fox issue as I want to make sure that I don't have it with my player. Is it with any fox title? I have Hitman, I think that that is a Fox title. If that one's not buggy, what one should I look for to test? I will rent it. What will the player do if it has this issue.
360_4_EVER! 07-23-08, 03:28 PM Try Sunshine, any of the Die Hards, or Juno.
tsteph69 07-23-08, 05:01 PM Try Sunshine, any of the Die Hards, or Juno.
That's the Blu-Ray versions, correct??
On my way up to BlockBastard now to see what I can find. Hitman seems ok so far, it is a Fox title. What does it do anyway if it has the issue?
tsteph69 07-23-08, 06:51 PM OK, rented Sunshine and Juno. Sunshine is in right now and seems to be playing fine so far. I have noticed on the fox releases that I've tried that the player says "slide show" on the load screens. Not sure what that is about.
360_4_EVER! 07-23-08, 08:22 PM The slideshow thing is normal. I think it is a Java-ism or something. If you don't get a red screen on any of those titles, you're probably OK. Wouldn't be a bad idea to try the bonus view feature on Sunshine too.

Would love to, but the 5000 was an open box at BestBuy and had the wrong remote. Came with the one for the 1500. Everything works on the remote except the Bonus View button. I think it was a cursor button on the 5000. If anyone knows an alternative way to get the Bonus View content to play then I am all ears. Otherwise I'm stuck until the right remote gets here.
Thanks Again

Smarty-pants 07-23-08, 09:59 PM Something like a programmable HARMONY universal remote will work. You hook it up to the Harmony database on the internet and tell it what equipment you have and it automatically loads all the proper funtions onto the remote.

That is a cool remote. I have the Sony AV-3100 though that I can program, just need the original. The original was only $35.
Smarty-pants 07-23-08, 10:29 PM Ya but when you figure that you can use the Harmony to operate ANY piece of equipment, and 99.9% of the time, you do not need the original remote. So it will operate anything you want that you have now AND in the future. You can get one for around $50 or so, and about $100 for a REALLY nice one.

schneid 07-25-08, 06:32 PM I snatched one of these at CircuitCity for $349. Updated to firmware 1.3. Plays all three formats. The acid test was Sunshine. It played fine but a "BonusView" window/button kept popping up.
Anyone know what it does, how to close it, etc?

Known issue. The only way to stop it is turn off OSD message in setup.
tsteph... I did the same thing (open box), walked back in the store a few days later, approached the youngest, most nervous looking salesman on the electronics floor, and told him I bought an open box a few days earlier, they gave me the wrong remote, and asked him to look through the box of remotes for the correct one... took about 3 seconds for me to spot the proper one. Unless you looked through their collection of remotes yourself, I would not trust that they lost it. Another option is to order a new one from Samsung for $25.

Unfortunately, I had the manager look through the remotes. Took him about a half hour and he couldn't find it. On the up side, I called Samsung and just explained that I bought a bd-up5000 and that it came with the wrong remote, they had me register my product and they are sending me the new remote for free. I don't even have to send them the 1500 remote back.

Go to the disc menu and select it to play the bonus image commentary in the special features section. It should appear during movie play when the bonus image icon appears.

It's a known issue that if you mix the speaker settings you get pops. You have to either set it to all large or all small. This is the bug in the current firmware. Not sure if it will ever be fixed.
vinnie97 07-31-08, 10:06 PM To help ensure an eventual fix, call and complain. :)

Lol... I sure hope they address the performance issues along with menus and subs. Other than that I think it's all good, well better than before I guess...:o
I just got two more Transformers HD DVDs from BB. I tried the one that looks like it was in very good condition and got an Error code: 0x000000ff. So I went ahead and tried my third Transformers disc that had many little scratches and it played fine. Has anyone experienced any issues with this disc? This is the first HD DVD that gives me this problem.
jylavmtlcda 08-11-08, 04:43 PM Hi. Last message posted in this thread dates back to Aug 1st '08. Where are the messages from that date to today (Aug 11th) ?? AVS was doing a database cleanup/update this morning. What happened ?
Rgds.

James A. McGahee 08-12-08, 10:45 PM Anyone here having problems with the HDDVD Top Gun. I read in one of these threads that it was a problem disk but can't remember if it was just BR or HD. I just purchased it along with Face Off in HDDVD for the price of just Top Gun in BR. If the HDDVD Top Gun is a problem, or Face Off in HDDVD I would like to know so I can take them back and get the BR Top Gun. I have 1.3. I'll also check the problem disk thread but I believe it is BR only.
Thanks-

The movie itself will play fine, but trying to select anyting from the menu leads to a player lock up. The Hunt For Red October, Shine a Light, and Top Gun were all mentioned. don't know if anyone tested the other 3 Clancy titles or Beowulf, but I would be surprised if they didn't have the problem as well.

Add "Sum of All Fears" (I also have "The Hunt for Red October") to the list! The only remote buttons that worked after they both locked up was the Power On/Off and Open/Close buttons.
The only other Blu-ray disc that I own that had a minor problem from my particular 5k unit was Fox ID4 - all options worked except "Scenes". I can enter the option, pick a scene then locko! Only the Power On/Off button worked to release the locked blank screen.
I emailed Samsung CS and after a week with no response, ... I sent it back to Amazon and replaced it with the Sony BDP-S350 (also bought the Onkyo TX-SR606 at the same time). After I updated the Sony BDP-S350 Firmware via the Ethernet port, the first 3 Blu-ray's I played was the two above Paramount & Fox ID4 discs, ... which easily accessed those various options with NO PROBLEMS!!!

vinnie97 08-13-08, 12:24 AM Phone correspondence is usually better...at least you know someone from the company heard and documented your problem. ;)
Assuming Paramount gave Samsung ample time to test the new discs and issue updates, there's no excuse for these lockup problems.
plays fine..but freezes up when going to set up menus....definite glitch here...but playing the movie itself worked just fine....gotta call samsung 4 sure

No issues with the HD DVD version, it was the Blu-ray version that was reportd as a "problem disc"...
acted like it was the first time they heard about the paramount problems..looks like awhile b4 and update
jylavmtlcda 08-19-08, 04:25 PM  Hello all. Just had a chat with Nathan T. at Samsung USA - I advised him of the latest blu-ray's from Paramount out since jul29th/2008. Looks like he was not aware of this problem (how many times do we have to tell them?)
He said he will advise his engineers to fix this and release a firmware update, etc... etc....I already called Samsung Canada on this also, so all we can do is wait, wait... until they release their firmware 1.4. Patience, patience... I did try Top Gun, Sum of all Fears, Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger. They all perform the same, playback=perfect, menu=zero. I think the new Paramount menus have all the 'bookmarks' feature. Guess they introduced new stuff & 5k is not ready for it.:D
I have 17 HD DVD's now & I think that will be it for me on this format. Those HD DVD's play so well...no lockup, no blank screens.....even Twister HD DVD released in May08 plays great ! Back to why I stop buying HD DVD's: 5k is the only HD DVD player I have so say it breaks down in 10 or 15 yrs, what happens with these movies ?? Will Samsung repair/refurbish my player for a reasonable price? Etc... etc... too many unknowns so will stick to blu and regular dvd's for now. Ok that's enough for now. Take care.;)
jrstinkfish 08-19-08, 10:35 PM Well, you'll probably always be able to find an HD-DVD player on eBay if your Samsung stops working. Hell, grab one now and stick it in a closet just in case -- you can probably find an A2 or A3 for under $50 :)
In 10 or 15 years, you most likely won't give a flying crap about those HD DVDs or Blu-rays.
my panny 10ak which is older than the sammy 500...plays the movies perfectly and accesse all menus..go figure
Smarty-pants 08-20-08, 04:36 PM It really has more to do with up-to-date firmware than the actual age of the player.
hasn't been one for the panny 10a since november...plays all flawlessly..sammy's seem to have the most issues and the most firmware updates..was the same issues with the 1200 player...must be a flaw in sammy's blu ray technology when they manufacture players...they need to go back to the drawing board
vinnie97 08-21-08, 08:14 AM It surely seems they need the most updates. Unfortunately, they seem to be going about haphazardly in the hardware realm. They were first to market and now they can't seem to stop churning out new models at an average of every 6 months.

Nope. Almost every Sammy player, even the regular DVD player, requires multiple firmware updates. Sammy tends to rush out hardware before software is ready.
Foxbat121 08-21-08, 12:52 PM Now BD-P2550 has showed up @ BB, I think we'll probably see new firmware for our 5k in a few weeks (remember 1.3 firmware was out after BD-P1500 showed up for a few weeks) :)
Smarty-pants 08-21-08, 01:43 PM What the hell is a BD-P2550???

I just purchased an open box UP5000 from Circuit City. I updated it via the ethernet to v1.3. I tried playing Live Free or Die Hard last night and got the scrolling "Slide Show" message. I skipped the promos where it was hanging up and finally got it to play until around the 1:25 mark where it froze. I contacted Samsung support this morning and they verified that v1.4 is now available (not on their site yet) and hopefully that will fix my problem. They said that I should receive in a few days. I'll post again when I get it and if the update resolves the problem.
I just called into Samsung and did what every 5K owner should do, report any bugs that occur. I let the CSR know the issues with recent Paramont titles but it took almost 10 minutes to explain I was just giving her information and not requesting a repair ticket.
Is anyone having an issue with The Hunt for Red October where when you are fast forwarding for over 8 seconds the player locks up?
jylavmtlcda 08-21-08, 07:10 PM Hi. Yes got the same issue as you with Hunt for Red October and I also tried Top Gun blu-ray's and locks up at different speeds either 8x or 128x after around 10 or 20 secs. The firmware update will also fix this hopefully. Bonsoir/bonne nuit tout le monde !
(Good evening/good night to all).

Hi. Just chatted with Nathan again at Samsung USA & reported the freeze problem on Fast Forward on the Paramount BD's in question & he will forward & add this problem on the issue he reported about menu's lockup. Cheers, good night.:p
I am getting a freezing problem when watching Blu Rays and SD now. It does not happen all the time but, it has happened a couple of times already on different movies. Do you think a lens cleaner will help? The player plays anything I throw at it even Fox titles. Just started having this problem recently.
This issue started about two weeks ago. By the way I had a marathon movie watching this weekend and watched all three pirate movies without a hiccup. Today I was watching Fantastic Four and the movie froze towards the end. Had to restart the player and watched the same scene without a problem. It seems to be happening intermittently.
vinnie97 08-22-08, 12:13 AM Yuck, man...you're the fourth or so long-time owner to report this.
I've been having a bit of a nightly marathon lately myself with Hollywood Video's free Blu-ray rental special lately. Largely trouble-free. :D
I can't help the dust situation when opening the tray, since you gotta open it to put the disc in! But I long ago developed a habit of looking at every disc (even brand new ones) before putting them in. Wiping them gently if they had residue or blowing off the dust.
Knock-on-wood, that seems to have helped me avoid all but the firmware-proven problems with most discs.
vinnie97 08-22-08, 03:03 AM ^I've been doing the same. Also, for those having problems, try blowing some compressed air into the tray's space.

played fine all the way through......mine was an open box from BB...you never know how players were abused on shelves..maybe yours took a beating.

I've had the player since December '07, and up until now, the only lock-ups I had experienced were from home-made Dual Layer DVD's, which I had attributed to the media itself. (Single Layer home-mades seemed to work just fine.) Lately, though, I've been experiencing a lot more freezes and audio dropouts on SD material than ever before, both commercial and home-made (DVD-R and DVD+R). BD and HD-DVD seem to be unaffected, though.
For the folks who just recently purchased open box 5K at CC and are experiences problems not associated to the known list, you should quickly send you player back to Samsung for servicing since I believe the warranty is only 3 months labor and 1 years parts. I sent one of mine in and should be getting it back soon. Strangely enough, it was my new player having problems and my open box has been the champ.

So none of the recent Paramont titles lock up when you access the menu?
Bill Gaw2 08-25-08, 09:51 AM Cannot get 24 HZ. to stick in setup. Immediately reverts to 60 Hz. Any suggestions?
Foxbat121 08-26-08, 10:26 AM Cannot get 24 HZ. to stick in setup. Immediately reverts to 60 Hz. Any suggestions?
What's your TV? Does it support true 24Hz mode? In order for 24Hz to stick, you set it up and it switch to 24Hz output to display a confirmation box. If you see the confirmation box (means your TV does support 24Hz) and clicked ok within a preset time, the 24Hz will stay. Otherwise, you will probably see a blank screen, like my TV, and revert back to 60Hz.
Unless you're sure your TV supports true 24Hz mode (check Blu Ray Software forum sticky about a list of TVs that support such mode), it is probably a waste to use 24Hz mode.
Also, SD DVD and certain HD DVD or BD will force the player to use 60Hz mode.

I haven't tried any of the recent Paramount titles, but just the other day, I watched "Awake" (SD) and the player froze up at EVERY chapter break. For most of them, I could rewind playback for a second or two, and then it would play over the chapter break, but for one of them, advancing to the next chapter and rewinding playback was my only option.
Also, "Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay" (BD) simply would not play the DTS-MA track without very loud static, but I read somewhere that this is a common issue.
I seem to be having more troubles with SD material than anything else these days.

I had this exact problem with my first disc of South Park season 11... but only the first day. I got tired of backing up and going forward again to get past the pausing so I turned it off after two episodes. Next day I turned it back on and resumed and never had it do that to me again for any of the remaining discs either.
Denophile 08-30-08, 03:17 PM HI all--what an amazing thread-so much condensed info here--everyone who has a blu ray player should read this thread just in order to undrstand the new audio formats better:D
so here is my question--since I have pgraded to 1.3 my player is at best selective about what it plays but more often than not it ejects both hd dvds and blu rays saying teh disk is unplayable. 1) do you think that going back to 1.1 or 1.2 would perhaps help this in that it seemed to work much better then and if so, 2) where can one find the older firmware?
this has been so disappointing as my older panny (which actually got a firmware update on 8.5) has never had a single problem--in fact it has taken residence in my main system again because the sammy plays so few disks...
thanks
Kilgore 08-30-08, 05:52 PM You might check the disks that don't play for dust or fingerprints. I've found that the 5k is very fussy that way, in particularly with HD DVDs. I've put in disks that wouldn't load, or froze, took them out and cleaned them, and they played fine from then on.
vinnie97 08-30-08, 07:16 PM I've only had a disc denied once. I also almost always wipe the discs pre-insertion also, so that likely has something to do with it.

Interesting, I don't play a lot of SDs anymore but we did watch Saving Private Ryan and The Empire Strikes Back during the past month with no playback problems. I've avoided having the unit play home-made DVDs since we have a specific generic $25 DVD player exclusively for those media.
I must've missed the posts to H&K 2's audio static... the only issue that I've read is popping when bitstreaming and even when I played it on my PS3 sending out LPCM to my Onkyo 605. The other issue I have with that disc which only one other member confirmed is a lock up at a specific point in the movie. It doesn't lock up when I use the PS3.
And it seems all the recent Paramont titles will lock up when you access the menu. I've also had an issue when fast forwarding for more than 8 seconds, causing the player to lock up. Another member also confirmed this.
Caveman64 08-31-08, 01:22 AM Hello all, I am considering purchasing a combo format player. I am not sure if the bdup5000 will work for me as I have a HK AVR 347. Will that amp process dolby true hd and dts-hd ma via bitstream? Does the firmware 1.3 fix the issue where the player processes everything? Please let me know can get the player for 200 dollars.

Hello, this player can bitstream all of the high def codecs with firmware 1.3. I just checked and I don't believe that your reciever accepts bistreaming.
However, this player can also decode TrueHD internally and output it via the 7.1 analog outs which will allow you to get TrueHD with your current receiver. I think DTS-HD decoding will be added next firmware update (but not DTS-MA).
Caveman64 08-31-08, 08:46 PM shawnmos thanks for the reply, I picked it up today for 150 dollars at BB on clearance. I have it updated to HDMI 1.3, Little upset that I jumped at the avr 347, as the 354 is so awesome. However, I only paid 300 for it so can't complain. Thanks for the feedback.
I dont know if this is a problem with the disc but, I just watched the movie transformers on BD and had quite a few audio drops and video stutter. Has anyone else had these issues with this movie?
netflix rental..played perfect
Just out of curiosity, and since I'm still new to my combo player... IF/WHEN we get 1.4 firmware, will there be a new thread started about it or will this one just get renamed?
I'm assuming a new thread will start, that makes more sense to me instead of sifting through old information when some members may only want info pertaining to the new firmware.

You are correct, a new thread would be started....
Cool... that's what I was thinking, but wanted to be sure. I don't always keep up with this thread and didn't want to miss if 1.4 got announced and people started talking about it.

I just tried another Transformer disc from Blockbuster and its flawless in new condition and the video stuttered again in the same spot. Right around the time when the hot girl pops the hood of bumble bee to check the engine. I just ran a cleaning disc on the UP5000 to see if it eliminates the stutter.
Smarty-pants 09-08-08, 10:02 PM What cleaning disc??? The kind with the little brushes?? You may have jarred the laser out of alignment just enough, that certain times while playing a disc, it may not track correctly.

No it was stuttering before I used the disc. I am trying to see if the cleaning disc will help.

vinnie97 09-08-08, 10:48 PM Very nice, that's probably more effective (since it's aimed directly towards the lens) than focusing compressed air into the open tray. It definitely sounds safer than the brush designs.

Good move Bori, you definately want to stay away from those "other" cleaning discs.
I haven't really heard of any other complaints about Transformers BD. Maybe you might want to try sending your player in for service if it's still under warranty.
I haven't had the chance to try the disc myself, as I've already been enjoying it on HD for about a year now. ;):)
vinnie97 09-08-08, 11:36 PM ^That might be the case for most dual format player owners (or they have long since written off this goofy flick). :D
Smarty-pants 09-08-08, 11:41 PM AFI 100?... maybe not :D.
...but I usually have a soft spot for summer blockbuster type movies, plus I loved Transformers toys and cartoons as a kid.:)
vinnie97 09-08-08, 11:50 PM As did I...but the movie's too ridiculous to keep coming back for repeated viewings (the robots in the backyard scene for instance, gah. the inept govt. agent, meh). ;) That said, I fell victim to the hype and regrettably blind bought it last October. :o
Smarty-pants 09-09-08, 01:08 AM The soundtrack is what makes it repeatable  :D.
hi guys. any one of you have any problem with the sound of "THE ORPHANAGE" blu-ray disc ? the disc is new, no scratch whatsoever. player has got the latest firmware and receiver is Denon 3808.
when it starts playing movie via its DTS-HD MA soundtrack, i can only get sound from my rear speakers (5.1 set-up) and the sound were very very crackling n loud.
any idea ? i have straight away tested other discs (BR and HD-DVDs) and they all played fine.
appreciate any help.
thanks.
godfa7h3r 09-17-08, 11:00 PM I've tested bitstreaming of all the audio formats on my Onkyo 905 receiver and everything seems to work great except for DTS-HD Master Audio on HD DVD's. I get a static popping noise once in a while, much like the "DTS Bomb" (which I corrected on my Onkyo receiver by updating the DSP's).
Blu-ray doesn't do it, HD DVD does. Strange.
I tested Pans Labrynth HD DVD and the DTS demo disc (both HD DVD flavor and BD). The pops are not very frequent, but they have only occured on the HD DVD side...none so far on BD. Of course, this is just a couple hours of testing thus far.
FYI, it seems to be a little random. I can't rewind and get it at the same spot each time.
Just picked up a Denon 3808ci last night and I can confirm the popping sounds on Pans Labrynth HD DVD. I threw in Independence Day and Juno Blurays to test the Master tracks on those and experienced no popping whatsoever. Looks like I may just have to replace my Pans HDDVD copy with a Bluray copy.
vinnie97 09-18-08, 12:53 AM Yes, I also had the problem. As I listened further through the film, the pops became much more faint. I haven't tested this but some folks made that on a second run-through of the movie, the pops had vanished (or perhaps diminished greatly in volume).
emptychair 09-18-08, 12:42 PM I had them once, but now can't get them to return...not that I'm complaining :)

No problems here. I'm using the analog outs though.
musclebound 10-13-08, 06:55 PM I have a Samsung BD-UP5000 and a Onkyo TX-SR605 Receiver hooked up thru HDMI. When I play TruHD or DTSHD it turns on the receiver and I hear a difference in sound, but the sounds cost totally out withen about 10 seconds. I have to put it on regular 5.1 sound to get it back. I'm not sure if it's the receiver or BluRay-HDDVD player. Anyone else has this problem. Samsung BD-UP5000 is updated.
It's the Onkyo, and it's a known bug referred to as the "audio lock-on problem".
They fixed this problem in later firmwares, but the only person who can do the firmware upgrade is Onkyo themselves. They don't even let "licensed service centers" do firmware upgrades. It seems they made the upgrade process so complicated and error prone, they don't want to take the chance of people bricking their units.

Does anybody have (or can anyone do it) an updated version of the audio output chart that is at the start of this thread?
It's very confusing, especially in that it seems to be saying that you only get 5.1 via analog outputs, which makes no sense at all since we have 7.1 connections... I can't test all possible configurations, but surely we are getting 7.1 output via analog from the Samsung for at least some of the audio codecs, aren't we?
If not, then why are the connectors even there?
That's what makes me think this chart is not quite right.
The reason I bring this up... I just recently bought a couple of Disney flicks with DTS-HD 7.1 and I know the Samsung doesn't decode that... but I'm not sure what I get via analog. Am I only getting 5.1 analog from the DTS core? (My audio receiver doesn't do the newer codecs and I don't have HDMI either, but I do have analog inputs on the receiver).
And whatever the answer to the above about DTS-HD... it made me wonder about LPCM 7.1, and whether or not you get 7.1 audio over analog for that, since it seems like a no-brainer that should be true except the chart in this thread (the one borrowed from the 1400 model) doesn't seem to reflect that.
Smarty-pants 10-18-08, 08:14 PM If I am correct in my thinking...
Yes, there are 7.1 audio tracks on Blu-ray. Since the 5000 can not internally decode DTS-HD/MA, those 7.1 tracks are "out".
Then you have True-HD tracks which I do not know of any that are 7.1.
So that leaves 7.1 PCM tracks. There are 2 or 3 of these out there that I can think of 2 off hand... Sleeping Beauty and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
I belive the 5000 DOES internally decode 7.1 PCM tracks, and should be playable though 7.1 MCH analog output.
Now for SD dvds, there could only be DTS-ES and DD-EX soundtracks. I have no idea what the 5000 does with those, because I have done VERY little SD playbck on the 5000 so far.
James A. McGahee 10-18-08, 10:23 PM I have the BD-UP5000 w/7.1 analog output. My receiver has 6.1 analog outputs. I believe "Nightmare" was 7.1 TrueHD actually, but I can't remember... and I haven't watched Sleeping Beauty yet.

At least for the 6.1 DTS-ES and DD-EX those will go bitstream and my receiver decodes those... so I haven't even tried to see what happens there via analog.
It seems you and I are on the same page of understanding, though, which probably means I should just remind myself not to look at that chart. One reason I have a tough time sometimes is due to the lack of config for the analog outputs in terms of EQ/VOL/DIST and so forth, my volume levels are different via analog vs optical... so sometimes even a 5.1 optical sounds more impressive than a 6.1 or 7.1 from analog so I can't always tell if I'm missing one of the channels. I know the sound-test cycles through all the speakers appropriately, but its hard to judge from one encode to the next with not all being equal.
Smarty-pants 10-19-08, 12:42 PM ^Ok, you are correct. Nightmare is 7.1THD (the only one so far), and I do believe the 5000 will internally decode that format.
Sleeping Beauty is 7.1PCM.
Barney in the 1400 thread has a chart of 7.1 Blu-rays. I'll try to find it.

It's a 5 year old Kenwood Sovereign 5900. It has 6ch input whereas the BD-UP5000 has 7.1 output. With the matching MX5000 power amp I have the following speaker connections available. Center, R, L, RS, LS, + BL, BR, & Sub (7.1-as advertised with matching separate amp.) through the receivers Pre-Out Jacks. I realize the setup is not ideal or even proper, but until I get a true 7.1 amp. I would like to be able to use my back speakers but don't seem to have volume through the receiver's pre-out.
Thanks for your help!

Just because it has been what 5 months since the last update? While I wouldn't be surprised at some point to see support dropped, I gather there has been no urgent need. Lots of us have little things we'd like to see addressed... but I'm not aware of major failures that would drive a new release.
With the nature of Blu ray (and HD DVD before it) all manufacturers had to realize they would have to have possible firmware support for older players for longer than they are used to because of the encryption key thing where players might need updates to play new movies. IF companies don't provide that for older players, consumers will eventually uprise if they had to buy a brand new player every 2 years for no other reason than an encryption change that forced it.
I suspect player performance/new features to probably not continue very long... and for the Samsung, we might never see feature enhancements... so that part of the concern could be valid.
vinnie97 10-30-08, 02:16 PM There are some showstoppers, yes...Paramount titles from July 30 lock up with ease. Then, there are the few Sony title problems (Made of Honor failing to play, Zohan dropouts over HDMI)...finally, the infamous Dr. No (James Bond). The latest in new releases is the Dead Space playback problem.
This all warrants a fix...um, NOW.
EDIT: Not to mention the REgression with the flickering (24fps) AVC-encoded Paramount HD DVD titles! That should have been fixed the following day.

Think there is hope?
I think it is safe to assume that a firmware release is eminent.
A recent posting on The Digital Bits (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents) regarding the recent playback issue with the new 007 titles states;
Sony has just posted a new firmware update for the S300 Blu-ray player (the update is v4.30). This corrects the playback problems some of you have been having with the James Bond Blu-ray Discs. These readers (including Michael B. - thanks much!) say the discs now work just fine. Other manufacturers are updating their firmware as well, so keep checking here (http://www.blu-raydisc.com/en/Technical/Updates/en.html) for the latest updates if you're having difficulties.
While I believe we will never see any upgrade for BD Live (Blu-ray proile 2.0) I expect the firmware release for the BD-UP5000 will run later than most and hope that it will include fixes and enhancements over and above that of the fix for playback of Sony titles (Hunt for Red October anyone?).
I appear to be in the group of people having received issue free players (knock on nearest forestry based renewable resource). My two Samsung BD-UP5000 have had none of the drop-outs or red screens reported by other owners. Aside from not having BD Live (which I rarely, if ever find a BD Live feature that I would use more than once), I miss out on nothing.
I have an HD Fury 2 (http://www.curtpalme.com/HDFury2.shtm) on order, which I hope will allow me to take advantage of the 1080p (in my case 1080i) 'up-conversion' capibility of the player as I currently have a non-HDMI television. I'll post my two-cents on the product when it arrives, hopefully this next week.

James A. McGahee 11-02-08, 11:50 AM I think they are referring to DTS-HD, not DTS-MA.
You are right. I found the information in Sound and Vision's current issue revealing the 2500 Profile 2.0 BR player has a forthcoming firmware update to enable DTS-HD HR. No mention of DTS-HD MA.
What's the difference in HR and MA? I know MA is the better of the two but is there a difference in HD and HR?
It's also interesting that Consumer Report has no, none, zero BR players listed in their top 7 picks although Samsung did pretty well in the LCD (1st & 2nd in 52", 1st in 46-47", 1st & Best Buy in 40-42", 6th in 37", 1st in 32", and 4th in 26" categories. In Plasma Samsung came out 1st in 58-60", 1st (Best Buy), 3rd, & 6th in 46-50", 4th in 42", with none listed in the 32" category.
Sammy didn't do too hot in the frequency of repair coming in 9th out of 16 in LCDs and 4th (next to bottom) out of 5 in the Plasma TVs.
Looks like Samsung needs to pump some time, money, energy and quality into the BR player division along with build quality into the TV division. I suspect the profits are tilted a lot toward the flat panel side of the equation resulting in a better initial showing for the TV division.
Foxbat121 11-02-08, 12:22 PM HR is still lossy compression like DTS core. MA is the only DTS lossless format from DTS. Not many titles use DTS HR BTW. So the firmware update for that is quite useless.
shawnmos 11-02-08, 12:22 PM DTS-MA is lossless, DTS-HR is not. It is a step up above DTS though. Kind of like how DD+ is a step up from DD, but it's still not as good as TrueHD.
What I'd like to know is if they add DTS-HR decoding will DTS-MA tracks get downsampled to DTS-HR or will the DTS core still be extracted? Because there aren't many movies that actually use DTS-HR.

I still haven't seen any double blind listening tests showing that these high bitrate lossy formats are perceptually inferior to their lossless counterparts. It's great to have them but I think the differences are commonly overstated.

Received notification of shipping just this morning. The HKMod over at www.curtpalme.com says that product shipment takes 2-5 days to anywhere in the world.
...the notification message showed point of origin (both the message and the shipping depot) to be Taiwan. Give or take a day should it get delayed in customs, and I 'may' have it by the weekend.
I'll start a review thread (or add to one, if one already exists) once I take delivery and get it configured.

James A. McGahee 11-03-08, 08:28 PM My 720p projector has one dedicated HDMI input. In order to run only one cable to the projector I use a component to HDMI converter which feeds into a 4 way remotely controlled switch box. From the switch box I run the one HDMI cable to my projector. I am pretty sure neither the switch box or the component to HDMI converter upgrade quality of video or audio. My DVD changer has Faroujda DCDi processing which helps quite a bit with the standard DVDs.
Question:
Would the FuryII improve the Farojuda DCDI processing even more if I replaced the current MonoPrice component to HDMI converter with the FuryII, placing it between the changer and switch box instead of the old Component to HDMI converter?

How very odd! I had alread flushed my browser cache (FireFox 3.1 beta) and re-load the page, and also tried FireFox 3.0 as well as IE and saw nothing other than 1.3!
Samsung must have either done some sort of staged roll-out, or they've got multiple web servers serving various regions and the page I was routed to was not updated as quickly as others.
Of course now that I am in to work, I can see 1.4. Time to remote into my home network and at least get it downloaded. I was planning to run back home over lunch, so I'll burn and update at that time.
You have to double click the FW box on the web site and there is Ver 1.4 to download about 28MB.

Gene - did you burn the ISO file to CD (i.e. ISO burned as a data file onto the CD), or did you burn the CD 'from' the ISO file.
The reason I ask is most failures are brought about when a user burns the file to CD. ISO files are in fact 'images' or 'snapshots' if you will, of the actual media. That said (and excuse me if you already know this), you need to open the ISO file from the burning software and burn the image to CD.
Alternatively, most bruning applications are associated with ISO files and will recognize them as such. Simply running the ISO file, in most cases, will open your burning application to a dialog box prompting you to 'burn'.
Hope this helps. If anyone can describe the ISO format or method of burning better than I, please feel free to do so.
Spence

Spence
Did you ever have a chance to start a thread on the HDFury?

No I have not! Thanks for the reminder! I'll see if I can get some photos taken and compose something over the next couple of days.
In short, it works as advertised and I am happy.

Great Spence, whenever you have the time, I will appreciate it. Based on your other posts, I believe we have similar setups, so your review will be very helpful for me. I am especially interested in the SD upscaling results you've had. Thanks again!
Spassvogel42 02-24-09, 03:07 AM Two questions...sorry if noobish...
How do I find what firmware version I have for the BDUP5000?
Does the 1.3 update allow you to play Blu-Ray recordables? I tried playing a burned blu-ray disc that I'd made and this wouldn't play it. The PS3 would.
Thanks!
Anyone looking to buy one with about 10 hd dvd's can pm me.
