View Full Version : Question-Basement Flooded
tonybradley 05-30-08, 09:29 PM I was washing off my deck on Thursday, scrubbing, spraying, etc. Had the water nozzle on for about 3 hours. To make a long story short, the entire basement was flooded due to a split in the water hose nozzle bib. Luckily, my speakers in the HT are OK, but the carpet is ruined. Not a huge deal, but still stinks.
Ok, the plumber installed a new frost free nozzle, but it's longer than the old one. Before, the Shut off for that water hose nozel was inside the wall and I had a wall plate covering it. Well, now, because it is longer, the Shut off valve sticks out from the drywall. When the valve is open, it sticks out about 4 inches. The plumber and the adjuster told me you can buy an access panel to cover it. However, I did not see anything that would work at HD or Lowes. The only ones I can find are flush mount, which aren't deep enough to cover the shut off valve. I can't find anything on line from my searching either. Anyone have any ideas?
dnddwilson 05-30-08, 11:09 PM Is it possible to build a 4" deep column at that location?
A 2x4 plus the drywall thickness would give you the needed depth.
You could then mount a flush-mount access panel.

I may have to go this route. I was hoping I could buy something that would work off the shelf. If not, I do plan on building one, but I now have so many other projects (replacing molding, Carpet, painting, etc.) that I was hoping to get by a little easier on this one. But, I may not have another choice, and I do like your suggestion.
tonybradley 06-01-08, 10:50 PM Nobody has a Ready-Made suggestion to cover my Shutoff that protrudes about 4 inches from my drywall? I'll build a box around it if I have to, but for the sake of time and hassle, I was hoping a company made an Access Panel/Box that didn't fit flush with the drywall, but could be mounted to the wall, over top of the shut off valve.
BIGmouthinDC 06-02-08, 08:25 AM Frost proof sill cocks come in a variety of lengths and your plumber should have used one that was appropriate for your wall construction so that it doesn't protrude and doesn't require access from inside the house. The outside handle controls the valve that is way inside the house and you avoid the split pipe issue.
He just grabbed what he had on his truck and called it a day.
Time to discover that plumbing is not that hard to learn. Playing with fire is always fun. BritinVA installed some in his build thread if I remember correctly.
One vendor's offering, they 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 inch lengths.

You are right that it's all he had on his truck. He did ask if I was OK with that or if I wanted him to drive back to town for another one, then back to my place. He then told me you can buy an access panel at Lowes to cover it, so the bigger one wasn't a big deal.........until I discovered that I can't find a panel to cover the shut off that protrudes from the wall on the inside :o
Looks like I'll be building one myself.
BIGmouthinDC 06-02-08, 06:11 PM Living with a shut off protruding from a wall is like walking around with your glasses held together with tape.

If that was my house every time I saw the bump out I would think that It should have been done differently. But that is my affliction.
The_Fuzz 06-02-08, 06:15 PM I just came here to say, you are not alone! I did the exact same thing last month. I had been smart and unhooked my water line last fall, then spring came and I hooked it up. Being in Calgary, winter came again (-15°C a the end of April!) and it must have froze. I had the same design as what is posted here. Anyway, washed the deck for about an hour, came in and all I could smell was wet cardboard! It was leaking in my storage space and all my boxes were soaked. Fortunately there was a floor drain there, so nothing got anywhere near my electronics. As I was washing I thought to myself, geez, there doesn't seam to be a lot of water pressure! I should have checked then.
I replaced the piece myself, but for some reason the one there before was 13". I bought a 12" one, thinking they were all the same. Go figure.

We have too much pressure where I live. I just purchased a regulator, but haven't installed it. I did have pressure while washing the deck, but it wasn't as much as usual. I had purchased a new Water Nozzle for the other water hoze, and it came with a free "cheap" one. I used that on the hose to wash the deck, and thought the decrease in pressure was due to the different nozzle I was using. Oh well, live and learn. They made it sound like I would have no problem buying something pre-made to cover the protruding shut off valve, so I thought nothing of it. I'll know better next time. Honestly though, I don't mind having a panel protruding from the wall as it's near a corner that is rarely seen and behind my Treadmill. I just didn't want to have to build something.
