I have a new Toshiba D-R400 DVD recorder.
I have an older Sony 61" Projection TV with no HDMI but it does have Component, S-Video and Composite in.
I have a cable box with HDMI, Component, S-Video, and Composite out.
The DVD Recorder has two RCA (I guess they are Composite) inputs and one S-Video input. It has one Component and one composite output.

I want to watch HD TV and I realize I cannot record HD on the DVD recorder.

Can I connect the Cable box to the TV with Component AND connect the Cable Box to the DVD recorder with S-Video.

If that works for Video, what do I do for Audio? ONly one audio output from the Cable box.

You can connect the video as you suggest and for the audio you will need to purchase audio splitters to send the signal to the TV and recorder. You can record HD programming in standard definition 480i.

Thanks for the reply!

Should I be getting a video signal on the DVD recorder without having the audio cables connected? Because so far, I am not.

You're not seeing anything on the tv at all? Until you can get some audio splitters as ernie6 suggested, you may need to run cable from wall to recorder..
-then from recorder to cable box...I'm assuming the Toshiba D-R400 can pass the cable signal thru the RF jacks to the tv.
-from cable box, the yellow video, red/white audio wires to tv.

I had selected the correct input on the DVD Recorder, but there was another step. I had to select the "type" of input. I changed it from Video to S-Video and it Works.

Then I connect the S-VHS VCR to the front S-Video input and did the same as above.

I put the Audio Splitter on as we discussed and everything works!! Yippy.

The wife is totally confused, but I'm fine with that, she would have never used it anywas, and the TV works the same as it did before.

Thank you all very much!!!
