For those on the fence in the area, let me just say that Ken does a great job. I had him do my original calibration and a follow-up approx 3 years later. Ken is not only one of the best with g90s he knows how to maximize your system. In my case he got my g90 and lumagen working perfectly.

I had the pleasure to meet "the man the legend" in person. Always nice to put a face to the voice. Ken was kind enough to take some time during his travels to stop in and say hi. Within the few quick hours we spent together you knew this man knows his stuff, easy to see why he is in demand. O ya..for you calibration nuts hes got all the cool toys.

Fun visit Ken !!

I second that Alan! One of the more enjoyable experiences of him doing my set up, was having dinner and hearing about his journey through the video world during the early stages of Runco. This guy has been around the block and helped evolve the art of display calibrations. He and Sam were one of the first to bid into the price a professional calibration at time of install with Runco. And from there, he has logged many many hours, and has become on of the most sought after men in the business (consumer and commercial).

However, be prepared for a late night. This guy doesn't leave unless the level of PQ is EXACTLY where the PJ's potential tops out! He was at my house unitl 1:30am and would have went longer if he needed to.

Thanks Ken!

The boys are back in town!

Ken's here! I just walked back from Wallace's HT down the street... we got his PG squared up on unistrut and had a few beers while enjoying the "before" picture. Breakfast at our local diner tomorrow, then Ken can start his real magic.

Allright, so Ken Whitcomb and wallace1234 are on their way over to my house to calibrate my Sony D50Q. Can't wait to see the results.

I'm planning on asking Ken tons of questions so that I can learn more about how these CRTs work.

It did take longer than we had anticipated, but not into the morning hours. Both Ken and wallace1234 looked a bit beat up when then left (they were here for almost 7 hours!). We ran into issues with the IFB-11 interface card that we were trying to use, so had to use an IFB-12 instead. Also had to do a firmware upgrade on the DVDO VP50, which seemed to take forever. We ended up playing a couple of games of pool while the firmware upgrade was going on, talking about high end audio stuff, which we all seem to have a passion for.

Anyway, my D50Q is back up and looking better than it ever has.

ken - thanks for the incredible work on getting this projector looking so good.
wallace1234 - thanks for helping out with the research and support!
clarence - thanks for your help on the IFB-12 manuals and DIP configurations!

Time for a beer and a movie!

If anyone ever gets the opportunity to hang-out with Ken, DO IT! The guy is so dog-gone knowledgeable, it’s a sin.

Well, I am just now getting around to this post. I didn’t have time before as when Ken left Sunday, I had put together my new Popcorn Trolley machine (father’s day gift), grill some steaks, and then of course watch 5 hours of movies and concerts. And then yesterday, get home from work, and hit the HT! :D

Ken’s calibrations result on my NEC 6pg xtra is nothing short of stunning for me. And, my wife agrees completely. While at first before she saw Ken’s work she said “The picture looks fine the way it is”, she acknowledges now that the picture is really, too damn cool!

And when Clarence and Mike Parker agree, I know I got something cool!

The past weekend was great. Clarence came by Thursday evening with some cold brews and helped turn the pj mount around. That was the first thing Ken noticed; I had installed the mount backwards. I mean, what are the odds of me installing it backwards. 50/50 for most people; 90/10 for me! :o And to make maters worse, I probably spent 10 hours deciding which way the mount should go. I felt a little better as he said the manual shows it being mounted backwards. Some quick mechanical and electrical work got us able to watch movies until about 1:30am!!!

Friday, Ken really went to work and did a complete “end-to-end” set-up. Man, he is fast with the remote! And the little secrets he has proved to be the icing on the cake. Clarence and Mike showed up for the day as well. We all enjoyed some BBQ (I guess it was good as we ate most of a whole pork shoulder). Mike said that I had finally step into the big league with the NEC. He is right! Or, I think he just wants first dibs on my Sony 1272 when I sell it. :D;)

Clarence and Mike pointed out how the very small details, sometimes deep in the background, are very visible and sharp. I had not really even looked for those things prior as I knew they weren’t there.

It was also really cool to go along with Ken and watch him work on someone else’s pj. Again, Ken is fast and very methodical is his approach and the results are astounding as was the case in the Sony D50 that “curtisG” had.

After getting back from “curtisG” Saturday, Ken did some more tweaking. We watched again until 1:30am again. Ken had had enough and crashed, while I went on to watch Cream - Live in Concert until almost 3:30am. On Sunday, I told him he missed a great concert, but he said he heard ever bit of it (I love those Klipsch speakers).

Anyway, what a great time with really cool people, Ken, Clarence and Mike. Just wish Cliff could have made it. But then again, if he did, I still might not be at work!

Big thanks to Clarence. As I now have a wireless PS3 remote (how fricking embarrassing)! :o

And a huge thanks to Ken; The Reverend of Raster for exorcisting the demons that I put in my pj. Also, for showing me the hidden menus and stuff in the 6pg xtra, vp50, xa2 and ps3 (man, again, how embarrassing). I guess it’s time to read some manuals……………..

And, of course, the person that made this all possible, Bid Dawg, Cliff!!!!!!! And dochlywd!!! :D :D :D :D

Yea, this post might look a little corny, but I am happier than a little kid with a new pocket knife!

I'll bet my smile is bigger than yours..

Just got thru our second showing of our HT. The first was with the Sony 1272, and they folks that were over were impressed with that. The folks we had over tonight were floored! Comments like, "Wow, that was a lot better than what I expected. I can't wait to come back and have a full blown BBQ and movie night". :D:D:D:D

And, I did just exactly what you suggested; after they left, we sat back and enjoyed T2! Once again, stunning.

Now, I need to find a way to fit about 8 more hours a day into a 24 hour day.....

Light output was just a hair over 7 footlambert and that's fine for me. Screen is WilsonArt Designer White. Size is: 80"x45".

Ken says a StudioTek 130 would go great.

Hhhhmmmmm, wonder where I could get one???:confused:;)

Wallace I've been all over the USA, and all over the world. I'd have to say your BBQ is in the top ten. I'd rank it up with the salt lick, Stubs, and Dream Land to name a few. But then again BBQ is like Sex and Pizzia, at the end of the day it's still BBQ :)

Yep, and it was a real pleasure to have been there on Saturday to experience first hand both of their work.

The BBQ was off-the-chain, as it was every time I've been so blessed to get my hands on it. Wallace is without a doubt the BEST when it comes to BBQ.

And for the first time, I got to see Ken work his setup magic on a lowly 6PG Xtra. This guy deserves his props big time. Truly someone who knows the NEC very well, and was able to make Don's 6PG one of the best setups I've seen. I was able to see great depth and other finer image qualities from 720P which are better experienced from the 1080 resolutions. The setup was 720P /72hz and it was stunning. Simply amazing what that little projector was putting on that screen. I used to own a 6PG Extra and has always said that it was one of the best CRT projectors manufactured.

Yeah they say you can't get blood from a turnip. Well if you throw it hard enough you can :).... But yes he's something, like a fish in water, or a duck on a pond. When ken's in his element it's really something to behold.

You guys are too good with the BBQ compliments. But, I hate to say, they aint my recipes, well I do modify the recipes I get "just a little :D". But I am a firm believer in the quote of "cook it low and slow and just the right amount of smoke" (hickory that is ).

You need to get over this way in some of your travels. Just make sure I have some time to get the BBQ ready.

Class Act

So yesterday, as I was sitting at my desk at work, I get a call on my cell phone from an out of state number which I didn't recognize. It was Ken calling me.

I had asked Ken a couple of questions when he was over my house, and he hadn't known the answer to one of them (not a CRT question, but one dealing with my iScan VP50). So when he got back to IN, he took so time to do a test set-up on another iScan, just to confirm the answer to my question.

So he was calling to give me the answer to my question.

What a class act!
