View Full Version : DSP and DAC brands
tausifs 05-31-08, 12:42 PM SHARC DSP and Burr Brown DAC seem to be relatively highly rated components. Are there any blu ray players that utilise both ? The Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player used both and the 5.1 analogue performance was pretty respectable I thought, LFE issue aside.
The Denon 3800BDCI uses burr brown but I don't know which DSP.
Has the LFE bug and 24p been fixed on the Denon yet ?
I don't have your answer, but IMO the Denon 3800 is a ripoff.
For the same price you could get an Onkyo 875 (which has Reon video processing, similar to the Denon's Realta) combined with a Pioneer BDP-51FD Blu-ray player.
That will net you Burr Brown DACs in the Onkyo, Wolfson DACs in the Pioneer, and excellence all around with Reon upconversion for ALL your sources, not just BD/DVD. A much better deal, IMO, and you are getting 2 pieces of gear for the price of 1!

I agree that the Denon is a ripoff, but saying the Reon video processing is similar to the Realta is streching it...

Realta is better than Reon, but finding real-world material to demonstrate the difference is very difficult. Hence, I would consider them similar for the uses of most.
tausifs 05-31-08, 02:48 PM I am after analogue audio performance that includes HD audio and bass crossover of 80Hz or below . And with low jitter- the denon claims to use a masterclock to reduce this.
The denon is the only player that uses a materclock ? It is expensive but there are few or no other players that currently offer this perhaps.
The Pioneer BDP-51FD, which I recommended above, has not only a jitter-reduction circuit - for use with any receiver - but also a seperate circuit that eliminates jitter entirely for use with select receivers.
The BDP-51FD also has Wolfsen high-end DACs for analog audio performance. All for $599. There is also an Elite version of the player (BDP-05FD) which has better component video output and flashier cosmetics, but is otherwise identical for $799...

I would agree wrt cadence issues, but the Realta is also capable of HD noise reduction and the Reon is not...
tausifs 05-31-08, 06:13 PM do you have a link for the pioneer player re the jitter reduction ?
what i had read about the pioneer was what they called pqls and this only applies to cd playback, over hdmi, not movies as i understood it.

Depends on the dac chip. Some are very good, others not so great..Just cause it's a burr brown dac don't assume it must be a great dac. It pisses me off that they never name the DAC chip..Maybe theres a reason for it..;)

My DAC1 is said to be jitter free. But it's only a stereo dac..:(
