Here and there you find a LiteOn or other "second tier" recorder that can be hacked a little, but most of the Japanese recorder brands (Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Pioneer) cannot and should not. I understand that people like the idea of a single unit that does everything they need, but this is unrealistic. The hardware mfrs and content studios simply do not want multi-region recorders to be sold affordably or easily. The only "cheap" solution is to buy the recorder you want and then supplement it with a known-hackable player or a player that is region-free out of the box. If you really must have a recorder that is "region-free", do your homework BEFORE you spend your money: Panasonic and Pioneer both make more-expensive international-use models that are sometimes modified to be region-free by stores that cater to this market niche. These recorders cost 30-50% more than one you'd buy on sale at a chain store, they do NOT do standards conversion, and they usually have inconveniences like weird tuners and funky setup operations. Unless you're in the military and need to take a recorder all around the world, you'll be happier with a recorder designed for your specific country and a companion player that is region-free and does standards conversion. Mr_Mod 06-01-08, 04:12 AM very easy to make region free, take a look over here (http://www.avforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=113) there is plenty of info on how to do that, and also my breif on how to upgrade the HDD. I am currently using a 1TB in my x870 |
