View Full Version : Costco 40GB Bundle vs. Upcoming (REGULAR) MGS4 Bundle
aphex187 06-01-08, 09:06 PM I received a 40GB PS3 Costco bundle today. Includes a second Sixxaxis controller, bluetooth remote and HDMI/usb cables.
I'm wondering if I should return this and pick up the 80GB MGS4 PS3 bundle that comes out in about 2 weeks. 80GB, Single DualShock controller (instead of the 2 x Sixaxis) and MGS4 (I have no interest in this). I have about 30 PS2 games but I never really play them so I'm unsure if BC really matters.
What do you guys think? Take the 40GB PS3 w/ Accessories or return and wait till the other bundle comes out?
Are the DS3 controllers that much better? Is the hard drive space that useful?
GW-SMOkeY 06-01-08, 09:09 PM Well it defeats the purpose... LOL I mean the Regular version and the game is a nice bonus + the DS is that much better than regular SIX AXIS imo... 80gb and BC is icing on the cake...
kylebisme 06-01-08, 09:29 PM The rumble is rather weak on the DS3, but at least it is there and I like the weight much better than the Sixaxis as well. As for HDD space, I've yet to run low on my 20GB drive, even while letting old demos linger around far longer than I have any use for.
jeanson 06-01-08, 11:46 PM dont forget costco's lenient warranty
aphex187 06-02-08, 12:00 AM Yeah I thought about that but I'm not sure how they will feel if everything has been opened up.
Doom878 06-02-08, 10:13 AM Price on Costco bundle?
flashfunk 06-02-08, 10:24 AM Yeah I thought about that but I'm not sure how they will feel if everything has been opened up.
They won't care. Thats why its a lifetime warranty, you can return it whenever you want and for whatever reason. Just make sure you return every piece that came with the bundle.
aphex187 06-02-08, 10:24 AM Price on Costco bundle?
$499
Daekwan 06-02-08, 10:32 AM $499 for the bundle (a $399 PS3 + $50 DS3 controller + $25 remote + $6 HDMI isnt a deal) so I say return the costco bundle.
For the same price you are getting 40 more gigs (alot of PS3 games require mandatory installs up to 5 GB's of space per game). You are also getting BC (sure you may never use those 30 PS2 games.. but atleast the ability is there. You also get a memory card reader and 2 more USB slots (which are cheesey upgrades.. but if you do use em.. their priceless).
Oh and you get MGS4 in the box. I have no interest in MGS4 either.. but I know if I can find a store that will accept it as a return its good for $60 in store credit.. or I can sell it on craiglist or ebay for $50 bucks.. or I can try and trade it in gamestop/EB etc for another title. Regardless the "free" MGS4 included in the box is worth something even if you never open the plastic on the game.
Sounds like a no-brainer.. what are you are waiting for?
bryansj 06-02-08, 10:42 AM For me the accessories aren't worth the $100. HDMI cable would be less than $10 value, the PS3 already comes with the USB cable so you don't need an extra (plus I have many of the same cable at home from other devices), a regular Six-Axis controler has very little value (~$30) now that the DS3 is available, and in my case I have no need for a Bluetooth remote since I've got an IR2BT.
But if those items have $100 in value over the MGS4 bundle then do it since it has a great warranty. Another option would be to get the MGS4 bundle and sell the game for about $50 since you said you have no interest in it.
Also, if Costco carries the MGS4 bundle don't expect it to be $499. It would be bundled with controllers and cables which would push the price to about $599.
Edit: (looks like Daekwan said about the same thing I said)
Return it. Get the Metal Gear 80gig package for $399 at Walmart next week. Or, the 40gig one for $299 this week.

Good luck with that. In the past, all bundled games say "Not For Resale", so EB/Gamestop won't allow trade-ins on those because they don't have any real "value". Ebay/Craigslist/Goozex is probably your best bet for it.

Walmart $299? What?

Uhm.... the 40g PS3 w/o bundle is $399 WITH the $100 online bonus
$399 - $100 giftcard = $299 for unit.
Technically, it's $399+tax out of your pocket, but you walk away with $100 giftcard.
Fred C Dobbs 06-02-08, 06:21 PM Sunday and Monday Only in store $399 comes with $100 gift card = $299
confidenceman 06-02-08, 06:23 PM Are the DS3 controllers that much better? Is the hard drive space that useful? Now that I've gotten used to no rumble, I don't want the DS3. I've grown annoyed with my rumbling 360 controller. It's a gimmick that doesn't deserve to last. But if you like rumbling controllers, maybe it's worth it.
I use BC all the time, but if you don't, then don't worry about it.
As for the extra hard drive space, you can always replace a smaller HDD with a much larger SATA laptop drive. I popped out my 60gig and replaced it with a 320gig for ~$150. Don't let the extra 40gigs persuade you one way or the other. If HDD space becomes an issue for you, it's a far better value to replace it yourself.
As a fair warning, once you do go with a bigger HDD, it will fill up fast (I've got about 200gigs worth of video, music, PSN downloads, game demos, game data, and game saves).
I'd just hold on to your current console, especially if you're not interested in MGS4.
Your console: $499 $399 console + $50 second sixaxis + $20 remote + $6 HDMI cable
= $575 $475 value for $499 (wtf?!)
MGS4 bundle: $499 console + $60 MGS4 (that you don't want)
= $559 value for $499
There's not much difference in terms of value, plus the MGS4 bundle comes with a game you don't want. You could sell it for $40-45 which would bring the total value to ~$540. IMO, not worth it to you.
EDIT: Wait... the Costco bundle was for the 40gig model?! That's totally a rip-off. Take it back. Did it come with any games? The only real "bonus" in that bundle is the second controller. You don't need the remote (since it's not easy to get working with a universal remote, most folks just use the controller), and you can get an HDMI cable for dirt cheap.
Sunday and Monday Only in store $399 comes with $100 gift card = $299
Sunday ad here and online for my zip code both state all week (June 1 - 7). However, 'Limited Quantities availibles' is listed right above it.
EvilRonin_ 06-03-08, 02:17 AM I ran over after work to pick one up at Walmart with the $100 gift card. Naturally they were all sold out so I headed over to BestBuy to see if they would price match. Evidently several others had already done this so they gave me a gift card which I used on a game and a BluRay remote. For $299, I'm very happy.

good deal. a great game console and the best bluray player on the market for 299.00
aphex187 06-03-08, 09:11 AM Yes - at this point the plan is to return the 40GB PS3. Its not a good deal - Its a little bizzare as this bundle appears to be _ancient_ so I guess my costco had them sitting in the back when the g/f went and picked it up.
I think I'll prefer the 80GBs ability for BC after looking at my library of PS2 games (never finished Dragon Warrior, FFX2..etc). I do like rumble controllers and got used to the feature on the Wii and 360.
As confidenceman pointed out the Costco deal isn't a deal at all - just a convenient bundle - if thats what you want. The most frustrating thing was the fact that it *didn't* come with a game at all, just the 40GB PS3, extra sixaxis, BD remote and HDMI/USB2.0 cable. I have more HDMI & USB cables than i know what to do with and the controller will work just fine for movies. My g/f didn't know at the time that it wasn't a great bundle so no biggie.
Another factor was MGS4, I originally didn't know much about it until a day or so ago and then saw some footage and now really want the game! I managed to Pre-order the MGS4 bundle @ Circuit City so I'm looking forward to that!

Why not get the $100 gift card from Wal-Mart next week with the MGS4 bundle? Maybe you could get CC to match the deal since BestBuy is this week for the 40gb.

The CC is an online order l can cancel anytime before the 12th. I'm really skeptical on the MGS4 bundle doing the $100 GC however as we get closer and it looks like this may actually be a reality I'll cancel the CC preorder and camp out at my local walmart.
xenon2000 06-03-08, 10:39 AM I bought my 40GB bundle from Costco online with $40 express shipping about a month ago with the explicit plan in mind that I will be returning it and buying the 80GB MGS4 Costco bundle when it comes out.
I even asked my local Costco and Costco online about the return policy on an opened PS3 bundle since it's not specifically listed as one of the 90 day return limited items. And the PS3 bundle can be returned, even if the game is opened. But only requires that 100% of the bundle is there.
I don't really care about MGS4 being included, though I love MGS and would be buying it separately if they didn't have a bundle. And while I would like a DS controller, I don't need it. But I must have my BC because I love my Timesplitters series and there is still not release date for TS4. So I have a tiny handful of PS2 games that I need to be able to play on my PS3.
The reason being that my gaming setup is a 100" 720p projection room. And the PS2 does not properly fill a 16:9 screen. But the PS3 does and it upscales the PS2 games nicely, even if only at 4:3. But with the PS2, it just doesn't work that well.
The PS2 will go to another TV and I could PS2 game there. But I still want BC. Card reader built in and 4 USB ports is a nice touch too.
I just wish that Costco had the 80GB bundle for pre-order, but they don't. They do that with some games, so I was hoping they would do that with the MGS4 bundle in June. 3rd day so far and still no word on if the MGS4 bundle comes out the same day as MGS4.
I paid the $40 for express shipping because I knew I would get a refund on shipping as well when returning the PS3. Hopefully with any luck I can get the new bundle locally, otherwise I will not do the express shipping for the 80GB bundle that I plan on keeping.
Daekwan 06-03-08, 10:53 AM I'm pretty excited to be pulling the trigger on this purchase.. but without a doubt I'm shooting for the 80gig MGS4 bundle with the $100 gift card.
If you guys have any tips on getting this from Walmart (or other places that will pricematch) PLEASE post that information in this thread.
Thanks!!
I'd buy one today if you can find it at Walmart/Best Buy. Then sit on it in hopes of scoring the MGS package next week. I know a few people doing this.
Daekwan 06-03-08, 11:10 AM Rdank I considered that.. but to be honest im pretty stubborn about the 80 gig package. For $100 bucks more I get:
1) MGS4 (which I can sell for $50 bucks back)
2) BC.. (I'm a sportbike racer on the weekends.. and the PS2 game Tourist Trophy by Polyphony is still the best sportbike racing replica game)
3) Memory card reader (trust me.. girls love it.. so easy for them to show everybody their summer vacation pics on the Plasma when I have people over)
4) Extra 40 gigs of space (damn those mandatory game installs)
5) DS3 (the sixaxis is without a doubt too light feeling in my hands.. and I love rumble)
6) Extra USB ports
I see myself using pretty much all of those items. And with the $50 i'll get back from selling MGS4.. I would have only paid $50 **more** for the 80gig PS3.
To be honest.. I'll probably get 80gig MGS4 bundle regardless of the gift card deal. I've wanted the PS3 for a while now, I've just been waiting on the right opportunity to really push me off the fence. So its not so much the dollar amount as it is I feel like I'm getting a "deal" with the free copy of MGS4 and the possibility of a free $100 gift card.

If you check out the link they list and read the full article as well as checking out Walmart.com, you will find that right now the deal is only for the 40GB model. The article speculates that it will also be for the 80GB model. But since the 80 GB model is not available yet even as a pre-order at Walmart.com, there is currently no way to buy it now and get the $100 gift card.
And there is no guarantee that the same deal will apply to the 80 GB when it's released. We will have to wait and see.
But if so, I am tempted to buy my 80 GB model from Walmart instead of Costco to save about $100.

My post right above yours explains there is no word on a $100 gift card for the 80GB MGS4 bundle. We will have to wait until it's either available for pre-order with the deal or until the deal is actually released.
PS. I would be happy to be proven wrong with a link to pre-order the 80GB MGS4 bundle with the $100 gift card.
xenon2000 06-03-08, 01:09 PM .... Also there is speculation that it might be gun metal grey?
It will not be gun metal gray. It will only be in the regular glossy black.
Doom878 06-03-08, 01:27 PM WM has an ad for Father's Day week, which MGS4's release day falls in that week, that ALL Blu Ray players come with a $100 gift card. The ad scan only shows 1 stand alone BR player and a 40GB PS3. Naturally they won't photograph all the BR players and they probably didn't have an official photo of the 80GB to use. No mention of exclusions neither.

Sounds promising, but still not solid enough proof. We still don't even have an official release date for the MGS4 PS3 bundle. We all know the game comes out June 12th. But Sony still lists "June 2008" for the release date.
So while it's still highly likely it will release on the same day as the game, it's not 100% for sure. I will believe it when I see it. On June 12th, if the bundle is available with the gift card, I am tempted to go that route instead of Costco. Though I have to return mine to Costco anyways, so if they have the bundle in stock, I may just pick it up there. Since Walmart is about 30 miles from me.
superklye 06-03-08, 01:58 PM $399 - $100 giftcard = $299 for unit.
Technically, it's $399+tax out of your pocket, but you walk away with $100 giftcard.
I don't understand why people say things like this. It's not $299 for the unit and it never will be. You can't use that GC toward the purchase of this unit, so you pay $400 and get an additional $100 to use on more stuff.

Because most people thinking this way are going to spend $100 at Walmart regardless buying groceries/gas/video game assesories, etc. Don't buy the PS3, you still pay for your groceries. Buy it, groceries are free. etc.
bryansj 06-03-08, 02:14 PM Though I have to return mine to Costco anyways, so if they have the bundle in stock, I may just pick it up there. Since Walmart is about 30 miles from me.
I wouldn't count on Costco having the bundle next week or even the week after. Even if they do it will be a double bundle of some sort... MGS4 bundle + Extra DS3 controller + Bluetooth Remote + HDMI Cable = $599
Online their current bundle is the RB6 Vegas 2 bundle for $499. When I got a PS3 on release day at Costco it was bundled with an extra controller and the crap game Genji! I wouldn't doubt that they would take their current RB6V2 bundle and swap only the game for MGS4 and keep clearing out their 40GB Six-Axis inventory. I really like Costco in general, but their console bundling leaves a lot to be desired.
xenon2000 06-03-08, 02:33 PM I wouldn't count on Costco having the bundle next week or even the week after. Even if they do it will be a double bundle of some sort... MGS4 bundle + Extra DS3 controller + Bluetooth Remote + HDMI Cable = $599
That is exactly what I want and was planning on getting. In the end, I need a total of 4 controllers (DS or not), the Bluetooth remote and the MGS4 game. HDMI cable I bought for $5, so included or not is no big deal.
But if I get the Walmart deal (if they get the 80 GB MGS4 bundle with this deal that weekend), then I could spend about $520 instead of $599. :)
Costco might get the bundle later than anyone else. But it's also possible that the MGS4 bundle won't come out June 12th.
xenon2000 06-03-08, 02:37 PM I don't understand why people say things like this. It's not $299 for the unit and it never will be. You can't use that GC toward the purchase of this unit, so you pay $400 and get an additional $100 to use on more stuff.
You can think of it 2 ways. And yes, either way you must spend a total of $399 minimum out of pocket. But...
1. $400 = $300 for the 40GB PS3 + $100 other things like DS and Game(s).
or
2. $400 = $400 for the 40GB PS3 + FREE other things up to $100 in value.
But since #2 doesn't sound right, people will see the deal as #1 in their head. So based on #1, you are only spending $300 on the 40 GB PS3. :) And if you were going to buy a 2nd controller and a game, you have essentially gotten a good bonus at the original $399 price tag.
superklye 06-03-08, 02:37 PM Because most people thinking this way are going to spend $100 at Walmart regardless buying groceries/gas/video game assesories, etc. Don't buy the PS3, you still pay for your groceries. Buy it, groceries are free. etc.
I understand that. That doesn't change the fact you still have to pay $400 to get $100 free. And if you're really buying a PS3 to get $100 free to spend on groceries, it would seem to me that groceries are far more important than a PS3 and saving that other $300 would be a better idea.
The Sony Style deal, however, IS a $299 PS3 after the $100 credit.
xenon2000 06-03-08, 02:48 PM I understand that. That doesn't change the fact you still have to pay $400 to get $100 free. The Sony Style deal, however, IS a $299 PS3 after the $100 credit.
I think the point that was being made about the groceries, is that if you need to buy $100 worth of stuff at Walmart regardless of the PS3. Then you are essentially only paying $300 for the PS3. I don't think they were saying that if you can't afford groceries, that you should spend $400 on the PS3 so you can get $100 worth of groceries for free. That doesn't make any sense.
I think we are all old enough to decide if we can afford a PS3 or not. That was never the point of any of the comments in this thread.
Now if you can show me a Sony Style Store link that puts $100 cash in my pocket, then yes, it's the only true deal that gives you the PS3 for a real total of $299. But that was never the point of this thread. I think we all understand the out of pocket expense of this deal.
EDIT: I found a Sony credit card deal with $100 credit that occurs about 6-8 weeks after purchase with new cards only though. So this could be a good option for new Sony Credit Card applicants.
superklye 06-03-08, 03:24 PM I did not see a Sony Style deal. And when you say credit, I think you have to use the credit with Sony still. So it's the same thing, yet more restrictive.
No, they give you a $100 credit to your account. So you spend $299 or more on the card, after 8-12 weeks, they give you $100 off your total so you'll effectively only be spending $199 since Sony is paying $100 of your bill for you, unlike this which is $399 no matter how you slice it.

Sony Card is issued by Chase Bank USA, NA, and is subject to credit approval. Your first single sales receipt purchase made at a SonyStyle store, including SonyStyle.com equal or greater than $299 ("Qualifying Purchase") will automatically qualify you for a $100 Statement Credit. Statement Credit will be posted to your Sony Card Statement within 8-12 weeks from Qualifying Purchase.
$100 toward your purchase of $299 or more, thereby making it $199. That actually IS doing what so many people keep claiming the Walmart deal is doing but really isn't

I still don't understand how anyone is coming to the conclusion that spending $400 and then getting another free $100 is somehow lowering the price of the PS3. It's $400. That's it. And the $100 card is being given in hopes you spend MORE than that as it's a substantial discount to merchandise. I know for me, if I was going to do this deal, I would be looking it the $100 card as doubling my game/movie purchasing power.
This deal doesn't lower the cost of the PS3. It gives you $500 for the price of $400. That's it.
Now if you can show me a Sony Style Store link that puts $100 cash in my pocket, then yes, it's the only true deal that gives you the PS3 for a real total of $299. But that was never the point of this thread. I think we all understand the out of pocket expense of this deal.
See above.
Look, I'm not trying to be an ass or create some huge war here or anything. The simple fact of the matter is that saying this deal is making the PS3 $299 instead of $399 is incredibly misleading and absolutely false. It is, as I said before, $500 for the price of $400.
Daekwan 06-03-08, 03:39 PM This debate is silly. Its $399 minimum to "play". No ifs, ands or buts about it. There is no such things as a $299 PS3.
If you have $299 in your pocket u cannot buy a PS3. Nuff said.
That said.. I'm pretty sure 99% of us can easily find a $100 worth of things we can all find extremely useful in Walmart. Not to mention its a giftcard.. so you can use the $100 as you wish.. spend a little now.. spend the rest later. Or if you are in the 1% minority that an cant find anything at Walmart to purchase.. then you could ebay/craigslist the gift card too if you are that pressed for cash. Id guess a $100 card would sell for $75-80 bucks.
xenon2000 06-03-08, 03:40 PM ...

Yes, that is exactly what everyone has been trying to say. I don't think anyone was ever implying that you will only spend $299 out of pocket for a 40GB PS3.
But I still think that most people are used to this type of advertising. And that most people understand the out of pocket cost is the same.
But what fun is it to think that I paid full price for the PS3 and got $100 worth of stuff for free? I would rather think of it as only paying $299 for the PS3 and then spending another $100 on other items. And that statement is just as true as saying I bought $500 worth of stuff for only $400.
So I don't get why stating the same thing in a different way bothers you.
xenon2000 06-03-08, 03:44 PM $499 for the bundle (a $399 PS3 + $50 DS3 controller + $25 remote + $6 HDMI isnt a deal) so I say return the costco bundle.
....
Missed the game that comes with the Costco bundles. Often a $40-60 game. Or in case of the MGS4 bundle, a $60 game.
$399 + $50 + $60 + $25 + $6 = $540 , so $499 is a decent deal is you wanted everything in the bundle and a Costco warranty.
Which is the case for me since I want the MGS4 game and Remote.
xenon2000 06-03-08, 03:48 PM I would like to see an official release date for the 80GB MGS4 PS3 bundle. Right now we are all assuming that this bundle will release the same day as MGS4 on June 12th. But it could be as late as the last week of June and still be "on time" based on Sony's official release date of "June 2008".
I haven't seen any ads with the 80GB bundle yet locally either.

When I see Amazon and Circuit City showing the same release date, I usually suspect it's accurate. Of course, it might not be...
Also, I view it as a $299 PS3. My books at the end of June will show either A) $300 to walmart for groceries or B) $600 for groceries and a PS3. To me, that's a $300 PS3. View it as you wish, we all know the how the deal works and don't get worked up over it.

CC is listing 6/12 as the PS3 MGS4 bundle release date.
Also, preliminary information shows that the BB ad this coming Sunday will list the bundle as on sale 6/12. I don't know if it is appropriate to post a link for that information here so if anyone really wants it, google for ad scans or PM me.

I could not find a listing on Amazon or Circuit City for the 80GB MGS4 PS3 bundle.
If anyone finds any stores with the 80GB MGS4 PS3 bundle as a preorder or anything with a release date for the 80 and not the 40 GB MGS4 bundle, that would be nice to have posted in this thread.

You can find it on Amazon searching for 'Metal Gear Solid bundle'
CC has had their's available off and on the last month. Plenty of people have seen it and a few here have bought it. Currently, it's not listed.
It's in the new BB ad as mentioned above as well.

That amazon link doesn't work. And as you said, it's not currently on CC's website. Also, at least in Oregon, the Best Buy ad only shows the 40 GB model, no signs of the 80GB MGS4 bundle in Oregon Best Buy's ad.
And I think you mean they pre-ordered it, since it's not currently out. And there is currently no official release date. Nor have I seen any store sites with a date listed for the 80GB MGS4 bundle.
If you have seen it... good for you... but would be nice to see it for myself as well via a shared link.

Do I have to do everything for you guys? =)
Here is the direct link to the PS3 MGS4 bundle pre-order. Please note that right now actually trying to order it does NOT work b/c like the other person said this has been available on and off on their website. I confirmed it was working just a couple days ago. This states the release date is 6/12.

Also, the BB ad I am referring to is for NEXT SUNDAY (6/8-6/14). Obviously, this isn't published yet but if you search here and other forums people have already leaked its contents and it contains a listing for this bundle and states "available 6/12". If you are familiar with SD search there and I am sure they will have an ad scan by the EOW if not already.

Yes, that is the Sony official link... which as I already mentioned, states just "June 2008" and not June 12, 2008.
So while I agree that it's highly likely that it will release on the 12th, it is not official and still possible that it will not be released at the same time as the game. Even if Sony won't give us the real data ahead of time, it's 9 days away and it would be nice to see some real signs of the 80GB MGS4 bundle having a date down to the day.

Thanks for the link. Trust me, I tried many searches and was only able to find the 40 GB non-MGS4 listing on Circuit City's website. So I thank you for posting a link.
I am curious how you found that link using the Circuit City search engine. I tried so many things and even resorted to browsing, and was still only able to find the 40GB model. So I wonder if you have this link bookmarked and it's not publicly searchable using CC's search feature.
Regardless, thanks for the link. At least it's something. Let me say again, I am sure June 12th is the date. But it will be nice when the 12th rolls around and we are proven right with 80GB MGS4 bundles on store shelves. Thanks again for the link to CC. I will post anything I find, if I find anything.

This is the only 80GB MGS4 bundle I find on Amazon... but it's NOT sold by amazon and it's a fraud at $899 listing by 3 loser sellers. I would not call this a viable reference.
If you have another Amazon link, I would be interested to find it via searching on Amazon.com :)
Nope, Amazon gets their product information from ASIN numbers from a 3rd party distribution center, not 3rd party sellers. The seller have no controller over the product details. Regardless, I'm done here and don't really care what you believe at this point. Best of luck.

Yeah I couldn't find it on CC either by searching. I've just seen the direct link posted by several other people in several other threads here and other forums.
FWIW, the BB SKU# for the PS3 MGS4 bundle will be 8844389 but it doesn't come up on BB's website as being valid yet. Most likely their online system has an "effective date" parameter so it won't be publicly visible until the release date.

LOL. Easy to upset I see. Completely not the spirit intended. I think you are misunderstanding me and the tone of these postings.
The whole point I am trying to get to is this. There are a lot of reputable gaming sites. IGN, Gamespot, PSU, etc, etc... none of them are saying June 12th because as of June 3rd, there is no 100% finite release day for the 80GB MGS4 bundle. That is my only point. I too am 99.9% sure that it's June 12th like the rest of you. But I am not trying to prove it's on the 12th. That will be done by Sony and a few others.
But I thought that it would be nice to see some links posted that support the June 12th date. That is all it is, a suggestion, time waster, exercise, etc. Has nothing to do with trying to prove anything.
Sorry if you mistook my posts for something else and with any tone other than enthusiasm and anticipation. None of my posts were meant to feel attacking.
bryansj 06-04-08, 11:29 AM This seems pretty official for a June 12th release from way back in April 10th coming from Sony themselves:

Thanks, that is the closest thing I have seen to official info that specifically states June 12th.
But just for the sake of clarification. It's not from Sony as you say. It's a blog that is hosted by Sony, but the info is from Brandon Laurino of Konami Online. Not from Sony or the SCEA. Not saying this makes it more or less "official", just want it to be clear that the info in that link is not from Sony, only hosted on Sony's PS blog site.
Which is good enough for me for Official. And I thank you for the link. As always, I will keep my eyes open for local ads on the 80GB MGS4 bundle.
Can't wait to get the new bundle so I can return my 40GB bundle back to Costco. Which is the topic of this thread. :) Sadly it's likely true that Costco won't have the new bundle on June 12th or even in June. So I might be force to get my 80GB from someone else, leaving Costco with a return and no sale. Bummer for Costco.
funsocaltiger 06-04-08, 01:35 PM I think an even better question than comparing the existing 40GB Costco bundle vs the upcoming 80GB MGS4 bundle would be to find out if someone knows what the new Costco 80GB bundle is. I'd be curious if it will be any good or if they will just throw in a crap game, HDMI and remote and price it at $599. I'd like to have the Costco "warranty" too but not if the thrown in game is something that I'll never play and is only worth $10 on ebay.

The previous Costco 80GB bundle that I recall was simply the Motorstorm bundle with the extra $100 of crap. At this point Sony would have to release a special 80GB package for it not to include MGS4. I don't remember ever seeing an 80GB system that didn't have Motorstorm so there probably won't be an 80GB bundle at Costco without MGS4. The big question is when would Costco have these in stock. My best guess would be that Costco would take a 40GB system and bundle MGS4 with it until 80GB availablility has increased.
eddy_winds 06-04-08, 02:07 PM Return it.
xenon2000 06-09-08, 03:14 PM Well, my local Father's day weekend 6/8-6/15 only shows the 40GB PS3. While the $100 gift card does specifically say "Any BluRay Player", don't help if they won't be selling the 80GB model. For those seeking the 80GB. I will still be calling to see if they will have 80GB bundles or not.

Most will be selling it. Some people have already purchased it from Walmart.

Well, I know there is that 1 guy that got it from an employee that supposedly didn't know any better at Walmart. But otherwise it's not available until the 12th. I am more interested in how many 80GB units Walmart will have so I know if I need to be there early or not to save $100.
Daekwan 06-10-08, 10:42 AM I've checked two Walmarts in my area everyday this week since Sunday (including this morning).
Its not available until the 12th.
The konami site has the bundle, but it is $599 for a 40G PS3, a dual shock and the game. Is this different from what is being offered at BB/Walmart?

Yes, that is the limited edition with the gun-metal colored PS3. By all accounts, pretty much a ripoff.

Thats what I was thinking. Walmart 40Gp PS3 $399 with $100 online gift card(at my store it says online gift card). Use it to buy the game and a couple $15 movies = $399 + tax vs $599 (although it has a dual shock and walmart has the standard. Gray case and the special box = $200

If you get the 80GB with MGS4, then it will have the DS3 controller. But like you said, the regular 40GB bundle will not have the DS3 controller.
I am calling today to see what the deal is at my local 24/7 Walmart Supercenter. PS3 is backing up right now and will likely be returned to Costco.
xenon2000 06-12-08, 08:40 PM K, so I returned my 40GB bundle to costco and then bought the 80GB MGS4 unit from Walmart with $100 gift card. Which I then turned around and used for another DS3 controller, Orange Box, and bluray remote. And all with the money I had already used for the 40GB Costco bundle 2 months earlier. So no out of pocket expense for this upgrade for me.
But the lame part. I did a backup of the 40GB and restored to the 80GB unit, and while it kept my game saves, which I expected, it does not appear to have kept the downloads. Which sucks because I had about 10GB of content downloaded. So now I will have to re-download all of that. LAME. I can understand re-downloading purchased content. But the free downloads should be transferable.
Conspiracy* 06-12-08, 09:54 PM Any idea if Costco is going to be getting the MGS4 Bundle? I dont see it listed on their website.

When I asked locally in Oregon, they said they usually see them coming about 1-2 weeks in their system before they get them. And they didn't see them yet. So likely not going to be in June. Hopefully in July for those who want to wait.
aphex187 06-13-08, 12:31 AM I returned my 40GB to Costco today after picking up the 80GB today. Couldn't be happier! Costco actually gave me a hard time regarding the return. Since my reason for return was that it was a bad deal, that the $499 cost wasn't worth the sum of the parts they gave me a hard time about that then tried to tell me I didn't return the included game (there was no game included). In the end however I got my money back and am happily enjoying the 80GB PS3. Will pick up a second Dualshock tomorrow with gift card. Not going to pick up the bluray remote since I'd rather pickup a Harmony 880 and a IR2BT adapter.
I just took pictures of my two daughters girl scout event this evening and I like the fact I could stick the CF card (Digital Rebel) into the PS3 and view the pictures. Couldn't do that with my 40GB and my TV only accepts SD/minisd. That alone makes me happier. I was also suprised that the 80GB includes an ethernet cable but the 40gb does not.

My Costco didn't give me a hard time at all. They didn't even ask why I was returning it or if there was anything wrong with it.
But I too am curious about the game. At least in Oregon and online, Costco ONLY sells the PS3 as a bundle, which ALWAYS includes at least 1 game and extra controller and sometimes the bluray remote.
I have never seen a Costco PS3 bundle without a game. And if you had the receipt, they should have been able to tell you specifically which game it came with.
Anyways, my game was opened and they still didn't care. Returned the $499 40GB bundle, and got my $40 shipping cost, and then bought the 80GB MGS4 deal at 12:01am. :)
aphex187 06-13-08, 09:25 AM No game in my Costco bundle - just an extra Sixaxis, BD Remote and a hdmi/usb cable bundle. Ugh.
Likewise, im just happy to be rid of it and playing on the 80GB!

This was answered above. The 80GB unit is not available at Costco online or at the local stores in Oregon that I have checked. It likely won't be in June. Maybe July. Would have to check each week and online. Good luck.
Waterboy77 06-13-08, 05:48 PM This is the resonse to my inquiry to Costco Canada regarding MSG4
ME
"Are you going to have the new PS3 Metal Gear 4 bundles in your
stores? If so what date will they be available?"
COSTCO
"We will be offering the new Gran Turismo bundle which should be
available in our stores within the next few weeks."
ME
"What size PS3 will it be and will the MGS4 bundle be offer in the future"
COSTCO
"It is the 40GB unit and at this time, there is no indication that we will be offering the Metal Gear bundle."
Hope this helps

No that's not what I am asking. I don't care for the 80GB as I already own a PS3. I'm just asking since there are some Costco members here if the game alone, MGS4, is being sold separately for $54.99 and already available there?

K, then it would have been useful if you said more than "at Costco" in reply to my post that mentions both the game and the bundle. The only thing I can say is that it is available separately from Costco.com, but you would need to call your local store to see if they carry it. For games I have found that Costco often DOES stock the same games they sell online. Often the bundles as well. But you will have to check.
1337H4X 06-16-08, 12:43 PM The rumble is rather weak on the DS3, but at least it is there and I like the weight much better than the Sixaxis as well. As for HDD space, I've yet to run low on my 20GB drive, even while letting old demos linger around far longer than I have any use for.
I have a 40gig and while i was installing part of MGS4 it said i had 500mb left, so i had to delete demos, game saves (which i wasnt even using) amd the like. I'll probably just get an esata HD some day and not have to worry about space.
