View Full Version : ED A7S 450 vs. Epik Valor
Wafflebird 06-01-08, 09:08 PM Ok guys. I am here almost every day (OK I admit it, every day) I don't have a lot of time to post but read a lot here. I am trying to decide specifically between these two subs. It will be for my bedroom theatre in our new house. The room is 16X13' with 10' celings. What I am after is a very good sub for music but also one that will basically rock you to the core for HT when requeted to. Whichever I go with will be replacing a Martin Logan Dynamo. A gret little sub in it's own right but it will simply not be able to do what I want it to do, which is basically make it feel like the house foundation is moving when Mr. Incredible is fighting the giant robot (you know what I mean;)) or the plane crashes on Flight Of the Pheonix. The price of either is not a problem and the lead-time is not a problem.
It looks on paper like the ED would be the clear winner due to driver size and the 1300 Watt amp option but it does not always work that way from a sound quality stand-point. I listen to a lot of music as well so pitch definition and accuracy is also very important. Is there anyone out there who has been able to do a comparison? Both wesites are a little fuzzy as far as Frequency response. I am not knocking either one of them as both companies just got hammered once the opened up, and I say good for them. I am sure updating the web-pages is on the list but I am pretty sure filling orders and trying to catch up is still a little higher on their list, again I say good for them.
Also I feel rather confident that either one of these subs would be more than capable for HT in a bedroom of this size correct? I am very used to powerful bass, couch moving, floor shuddering:D bass, from my living room HT sub, could I expect the same from either of these two?
Thanks in advance for you input.
CADOBHuK 06-01-08, 11:18 PM Not sure how much you would get out of Valor for HT, depends on your standarts. Your room is pretty small except for the ceiling height. I'd go for a7s-450 if you have the money, doubt it loses out in any area, and it will definetely have a big advantage in output.
Is there anyone out there who has been able to do a comparison?
I'm sure there's no one, just like in most cases, thats why I just post my assumptions.
BluLover 06-01-08, 11:23 PM I would go with the eD, I hear that they are great subs, and they are a very established company. And besides, the wait time is probably the same as an Epik.
I was going to buy an eD myself but I went with the Hsu because I was turned off by the wait time.
I have the A7S-450 and it is a great sub. It is capable of doing both. Great for music, but it has the ability to rock your foundation. I have not heard the Valor.
freeflap 06-02-08, 09:44 AM i also have the eD A7S-450 (pair). it is a great sub. both will likely be more than adequate for your needs. however, if cost isn't a factor, then i'd get the eD. bigger driver, bigger amp. it is very musical also.
when i bought it, i compared it to my axiom ep500 which is a ported 12" with 500w amp. initially, i was not as impressed with the a7s as i thought i would be. during normal listening, any of these subs will be excellent. however, with more careful musical content, esp bass guitar, the difference was DRAMATIC. the ported sub just boomed and the sealed gave a more detailed and natural sound. further, with higher listening levels, the power and depth of the a7s became more clear to me. i know that is not compared against the valor, but is all i can comment on.
don't think anyone here has heard both.
hope that helps.
Rutgers1 06-02-08, 11:05 AM ...with higher listening levels, the power and depth of the a7s became more clear to me...
This is where the A7S-450 rocks. I listen to heavy bass loaded progressive/trance and also enjoy live rock shows as well, and this sub can handle it all and does so effortlessly and with amazing power. The sound is amazingly clean not matter how high I turn the MV.
BTW - Anyone else here have FIOS? Music High Def (MHD) has become my favorite channel since I got my sub. The movies are going to have to wait for now. I watched Foo Fighters acoustic show three times this weekend. I don't think I can do that with any single movie.
Wafflebird 06-02-08, 11:36 AM I kind of figured that these would be the answers I would receive. I went from a Velodyne DLS-R3750 (my first real sub) to a Definitive Technologies Super Cube Reference sub. I know that this is not the end all be all sub but OMG:eek:. Coming from what I had to this sub was actually shocking. As I then knew I had never really experienced real bass before. I would have loved at the time to go with SVS, HU etc. but I had a very limited space where I could put the sub so I went with this one. I am NOT disappointed.
Now I would like the same thing for my bedroom, I have already the 40" LCD, Yamaha RXV-2500 (I know it does not do all of the new codecs, it too will have to be upgraded in the future), HD-DVD and a PS3 for the bedroom with a 5.1. The little Martin Logan is OK for now but it will not be when we move.
Freeflap and Rutgers1, these things are huge right? I mean basically two feet by two feet for all intents and purposes which is basically twice the size of my Dynamo? With a shipping weight of 130, do you have any idea what the weight is minus shipping supplies/packaging? Also I really appreciate all of your input. I really want to do this right. I will be using the Martin Logan in my office for a smaller sound system (2.1) because it is really a great little sub and for music it just shines. But a small enclosure and 200 watts can only do so much.
Hey thanks again guys, how long was your wait? freeflap and Reutgers1 do either one of you have the EQ from ED?

Yes, 2 foot cube.
And the packing weighs in at about 5 pounds or so...shipped weight has been exceeding the FedEx limit of 150 pounds by a few ounces lately so the last few have shipped w/o the amplifier installed(Having A7S-450's come straight back from Des Moines = not fun). It does make it easier to carry with one person as well.
SUPERMANROB 06-02-08, 12:19 PM Well I'm no expert to say the least but seems kinda unfair to compare Epik's lowest price sub to the A7s-450. I think if you just kept it to those to only(like you said),I don't think you would have to ask the question. Kinda obvious I would think. Put in the other Epik's in the same price range and I think you would have a challenge :) .
Just my two sents :).

The reason for the comparison would be the similarity between the two designs (both sealed). These subs from each line would be the most likely to be somewhat similar sounding.

Oh yes didnt think of that,Epik's only sealed sub. :D well like I said not very knowledgeable here :). Well I still think that between these two and $ is not an issue :) it's a no-brainer and I own a Caliber :)
penngray 06-02-08, 03:15 PM do either one of you have the EQ from ED?
I dont have the subs but I have that EQ, what do you want to know?
freeflap 06-02-08, 04:31 PM yes, it's a ridiculously big cube. i hope you work out or have strong friends. get a hand dolley / truck.
yes i have the eq2 as well. it has helped a lot to boost the deep 17hz stuff. a sealed sub generally has a gentle roll off in output that starts higher than a ported design. the eq helps flatten out the response. I am committing a faux pas by using some boost rather that cut to get my flatter response, but since i don't play the pair of subs anywhere near their max output i doesn't seem to be a problem.
Wafflebird 06-02-08, 05:05 PM Well as discussed earlier it looks like ED. Actually got to talk to Chris today as well which was very nice to be able to do. We talked for a considerable amount of time and spoke about these subs in particular as well as several other things. I am now sure this thing will be a beast in the room I will be putting it into. I will have to figure out whether I want them to paint it or not, most likely not as I will most likely finish it to match the furniture of the room. This is a nice option.
Knowing that this thing has the capability to be in the triple digits from 12 Hz and up is AWESOME. I am sure I will never push it that hard but it is nice to know that it has the capability of prodigious output, which is what I am after.
I was curious about the EQ just to know what successes it has been able to produce. I understand what it does I was just curious of how it works out in the real world.
Thanks to all of you for your input. Now I just have to sell and move:eek:

Never say never...if you stick around this forum long enough you'll be amazed at the things you'll try (or at least consider)! That sub should create an amazing bass experience in that room. Enjoy!
Rutgers1 06-03-08, 09:23 AM ...Freeflap and Rutgers1, these things are huge right?...
Yes, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Its cheap, its simple and it works but that is all it does.
Pros....
It has auto on/off, It has a SFF, it has two bands so you can tweak to peaks. That is it!! For $100 its great for the simple task!
Cons....
It has only two bands so you can not tweak difficult situations, its manual so no digital or auto configuration.
