I have an older (almost 10 years) HD tv. It is a Mitsubishi WS-65903. It requires a separate component, the RGB-CV10, to display high definition (1080i) signals. Here is the problem:

I want to connect my PS3 to this TV, but it will only display games that are 1080. I set the output on the PS3 to 1080i and I can see the welcome screen fine and choose which function I want, but if I choose to play a game that out puts at 720, I only get squiggly lines. The tv displays Directv signals that are not 1080, so why won’t it display PS3 signals that are not 1080? Oh , the RGB-CV10 connects to the back of the TV via a 5 connector BNC setup and I don’t know how to connect the PS3 to that. Any suggestions?

Early generation hi-def TVs like yours that can't display 720P are only supported for hi-def output if the game developer includes 1080i/P options in their title. Many games do allow it (more than the first year titles), but for those games that max out at 720P, you will only be able to play in 480P.

Technically speaking, you will still have to deal with input lag in games that allow you to output the 1080i that your set supports because the HDTV will have to convert the signal to (P)rogressive from (i)nterlace. That means there would always be a slight delay from what you try to do with the controller to what eventually happens on screen.

Either way, for 720P or 1080P game playing, to get the best results from your PS3 you would need to eventually get a modern HDTV whenever possible (I had the same problem in 2005; early tech adoption sometimes has consequences I suppose).
