View Full Version : Gold crown molding in red/black room?
What do you think of gold metallic crown molding on a black ceiling/soffits with burgundy walls/black pillars? I've seen the black/red combo and like it, but I haven't seen many pictures with contrasting crown molding, especially in gold.

Back story:
I'm slowly working my way to a color scheme. This is your chance to give me better ideas, or shoot it down. See my sig link (especially the last page) for a better idea of my theater, if it matters.
I want the front wall and ceiling to be neutral/black (possibly dark grey or very dark night-sky blue for the ceiling). The side walls will be GOM Anchorage Mulberry, 701 Burgundy, maybe Dazian Expo Eggplant (All dark red). Columns will be Black 701.
My problem is the crown molding. My light-shelf/soffit look like this:
http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z196/pgmeyer/avspics/DSC_8204-1-1.jpg
but with black soffit/light-shelf/ceiling/front-wall.
The light shelf pretty much needs to have crown molding under it to give it support and the look I want. I could probably get away without the higher crown molding: TBD. Somehow it bothers me to paint the crown molding black on the black wall. I want at least some contrast to highlight the crown molding/shelf. Gold is my current leaning. Any thoughts? Anybody seen anything like this done?
As far as light when the movie is on, none of the molding is direct line of sight to the screen. It could pick up some reflected light off of the rest of the room. I'm leaning towards a darker gold color.
grigsby 06-02-08, 10:44 AM i think the gold would give it an unintended Liberace feel....
bmwracer3 06-02-08, 11:27 AM what type of finish (flat/satin/gloss) would you be using on the crown? I think the flatter you go, the better off you'd be. A nice bronze might be a better option, but I'm a network engineer, not an interior decorator.
BIGmouthinDC 06-02-08, 11:31 AM CurtisG did his DE designed theater in red/back and gold molding.
Turned out beautiful. I need to tell you though that it helps to paint the molding first then hang and just touch up the nail holes.

I would have said it would be trashy but that does look nice!
JimProuty 06-02-08, 12:16 PM My "Narnia Theater" uses gold crown moulding. I used Modern Masters paint .
I think black/red/gold would be a classy look.

The gold sample I grabbed is actually one of the darker ones (more bronzy). I agree, I want enough contrast to stand out, but not enough to catch your eye during a movie.

Yes, I definitely plan to paint first, then attach and touch up. Painting is easy, masking is a pain.

Perfect! That link is extremely useful. I think my red will be a bit darker (or more burgundy), but that gives me a very good idea of how it might work.
I also like the idea of the more complex crown molding (especially the molding in the Narnia thread!). I had been leaning towards pretty standard molding, but I think the Narnia molding is really sharp looking in gold.
calbear 06-02-08, 03:54 PM Hi pmeyer,
I too am working on my theater with double gold crown moldings, red fabric walls and columns, and black ceiling with mostly black carpet.
Check out the link on my sig, and let me know if I can be of any assistance.
I too would recommend painting before installing. I unfortunately had to install first, but because I dropped the crown to accomodate the rope lighting above, and putting fabric over frame for the lower part of the bottom crown, I only needed to mask around the columns and the bottom of the upper crown. Also note that it takes some time to paint with these metallic gold paint. I am currently on my fifth coat of gold paint. It doesn't seem to apply very evenly.
Good luck.

Cool thread! I'll watch to see how your gold paint turns out. What kind of paint are you using? Did you end up going with the Modern Masters, and if so, which one?
dc_pilgrim 06-02-08, 05:50 PM I was Blue, black and gold. We used the Benjamin Moore two step application. A base gold color (Stewart gold? can't remember), then used their gold metalic glaze (expensive) since I couldn't find a convenient dealer for Modern Masters. Came out real nice.

finishingtouchcu 06-02-08, 09:14 PM I did Benjamin Moore Metallic gold and could not be happier. Gold on black makes a sweet contrast. Go wild !!! And yes, pre paint is a must. I even used my hot glue gun and pre-assembled my shadow boxes, sprayed, used my pin nailer, and you can't even see the holes.Porter cable makes a great pin nailer, pefect for panel moldings. Looking forward to your finished project.

Hi Paul,
The paint was purchased at Michaels, and the brand is Craft Smart "Metallic Gold" paint.
It cost $4 for 16oz, which is quite resonably priced. However, it does take quite a bit of coats to make it look acceptable.
Good luck.

That's hilarious! I looked at your 3d-tour a while back (I remember Dory) and it helped me settle on my red/black theme. However, I guess I never noticed the gold trim (I was just looking main colors at that point). It even validates my 'blue ceiling' idea, although I'll probably go quite a bit darker.
You even have my chairs (black 45004's), although I'm in black microfiber.
(Make sure to post details on your masking system once you get it going)

Looks good, Dave. Do you find the gold across the front is very visible and/or distracting during a movie? That's two votes for benjamin moore.

Ok, you get the prize for the sheer amount of gold trim. That must have been a huge amount of work. The results look worth it, however. Did you spray, or all brush?

Thanks! CurtisG's theater is very close to what I'm looking for, with two levels of gold trim.

That is cheap, and I have a Michaels nearby. The nice thing about those small quantities is I can do samples for cheap.
My color scheme is Purple Navy red black and Gold trim

Gold looks great with red and black.

Visable - yes, a bit. Not distracting though. It is sold now, so I am going from memory. Compared to the 30" HD CRT I now watch. . . I guess my point is if we were being total purist we would only build black or grey rooms. I like a few accents.
The B. Moore paint intially I was worried it didn't have enough of a golden sheen. Really popped when other areas were painted black.

I sprayed all the golds with a simple top load spray gun, and used a yellow ochre as a primer base. I used 2 coats of metallic gold.

This theater may be a challenger for that title. There is a lot of gold trim in each.

His thread, he sprayed his paint (modern masters) off the wall and installed. Some many great theaters on AVS.

Hehehe Thanks Paul.
I'm actually still studying versions of the masking system, Scott's looks promising, but then I saw one that uses a vertically mounted "shade roller" (for lack of a better explanation) that looks good too.
I put it on the "things I really WANT to do this summer, but might not get around to.."

AdamW81 06-30-08, 07:29 PM As is probably obvious from the pics shown throughout this thread, to really pull off gold trim you need a pretty formal room/decor for it to look classy (it goes a long way to making it formal, but fancy carpet, seating, base trim, walls/panels, etc. are things to keep in mind). I would say just make sure all the decor ties together for the overall look.
cabbageheat 07-01-08, 01:22 AM gold would be fantastic. many theaters use the gold combination, with all types of colors. I plan on adding "antique gold" to my HT room, which also falls into the red/black color scheme.
go for it.
Just a followup: I went with red/gold/black. Still no carpet, but probably dark gray.
I experimented with Modern Masters paints (the 6 oz samples of four colors), the craftsmart gold from Michaels, and two types of spray paint from the local big boxes.
Modern Masters: could have looked good, but weren't glossy. I'd have needed some kind of top coat to get the shine.
Craftsmart: couldn't get good results here.
The Winner:

A $3 can of generic gold spray paint from Lowes. Completely took care of my application method questions as well. I ended up using about 4 cans.
This will give a feel for what it looks like:

calbear 09-08-08, 08:14 PM Looks great Paul!
I will have to keep that in mind for next time.
yeah. I like it too. Just goes to show that going with your gut instinct works sometimes.
Ph0n33z 04-15-09, 02:19 PM I wish I would have stumbled across this thread sooner. I just finished painting my crown and trim gold, but with much more expensive paint! I forget the brand, but it cost about $35 a can for the metallic coat on top of a base gold. It came out looking nice, but probably not worth the cost.
