View Full Version : Losing signal on start up

When starting up my system, i'm losing my signal from my Cable Box (HD8300DVR) to my receiver(Integra 7.8).
If i unplug the HDMI cable(monoprice 28awg 3ft) from the receiver and plug right back in, the signal comes back up and is fine, and stays on.

Any ideas?
Could the HDMI cable weight be disturbing the connection?
And I've tried 2 cables, and same problem.

My sympathy:o. Sounds like it may be a protocol problem with the HDMI HDCP digital rights management. If the HDCP circuit in the receiver sees something it doesn't like, it cuts off the HDMI connection. It causes problems with many systems and it seems impossible to predict which setup will work and which won't. (Thanks to the paranoid entertainment industry we have to put up with this buggy digital rights management system.)

For example, my system has an Onkyo 805 reciever which, I believe, is very similar to your Integra 7.8 (except the Integra has added features specifically designed for the custom installer) and have add no serious HDMI problems with two different DirecTv boxes (knock on wood). The only glitch was, if my projector was off and I wanted to listen to a music channel, the sound would sometimes glitch on and off.

I assume you're unplugging the cable to the Cable Box and not the one to the TV?

If you turn the Cable Box off and back on with the receiver on, does it then come up?

A possible solution (although not very elegant) may be to place an HDMI switch (say a 2:1 type) in the line, which could simulate unplugging the cable. A switch with a remote control would make this operation reasonably painless, especially if you can program it into a turn-on macro in a universal remote.

I am actually just pulling out the HDMI out of the AVR and right back in.

I have not tried that yet, but will give it a go. I can also try to reboot the DVR w/o touching the HDMI

I have an Oppo switcher which i'm currently not using, not sure that would help much, since its the DVR to AVR where the problem lies.

But I did speak to monoprice. The technical service told me some devices need more than a 28awg HDMI for its signal(or something like that, can't really remember. Anyhow, I have a few 24awg on their way to test that out. Dang 3 24awg HDMI's and a strainrelief pig tail w/ 2-3 day shipping all for under $30 is cheap enough for a try. :D

Just connect the switcher between the DVR and the AVR.

Ahhh, i get you!
Use the switcher as a boost, which it is supposed to do.
If my new cables coming dont work out, i'll try that.
Thanks!

I also meant you can switch from the cable box to an empty channel and back to simulate disconnecting and reconnecting the cable.

I had a similar problem and on the third HD8300 replacement my problem was solved.

Night of the 5th... audio drops... :(
Tried new cables and oppo switch... not fixed.
If i pull the hdmi out of avr, audio is fine, but once i put that back in, i lose signal. arrrgh!
Night of the 9th.... picked up new DVR. Not better at 1st, but got better.
I prefer to keep my older DVR, got lots of shows recorded on it.
Looks like i should get an external HD for my cablebox.

Interesting.
It seems if i start receiver and PJ together. Then start DVR a minute or so later, there are no issues. I will have to test more.
It does seem the issues started upon me using a macro feature to turn all systems on at same time. hmmmmmmmmm.
