View Full Version : PS3 -- menu clicks...

Hi all!

When browsing around the main menu interface in the PS3 (is it called the XMB? I'm new), I get some weird behavior.

My impression is that every time I move from one menu item to the other, a clicking noise is supposed to fire.

However, my receiver (Sony STR-K750P hooked up via optical) seems to "wake up" too late to play the clicking sound. If I move over three menu items very quickly, I'll miss the first click, and hear the clicks for the second two.

As I type this out, it's sounding more and more like a receiver "feature", and nothing to do with the PS3... anyone have any ideas?

You have it connected via optical don't you?
I had a similar problem with my old Sony reciever connected via optical.
just turn the click off in the menu settings.

Yup, the optical connection has latency on the XMB and will drop the click sounds. What are the technical reasons for this? They can't send some type of continual signal to the receiver to prevent it from dropping? Does it happen with all receivers or just some?

I have a Harman Kardon AVR 435 connected to my PS3 via optical and I never hear the clicks through the receiver when browsing through the XMB, quick or slow. At first the latency problem bothered me, but then I forgot about it after realizing that hearing the clicks really does not matter.

I *like* the clicks. :)

Ok, thanks for the replies.

It's mostly the receiver, but it's also the PS3. What's happening is the receiver is in auto-sensing mode. So it defaults to listening to the analog jacks on that particular input, but then switches over to the digital input when it picks up activity on it. The changeover takes a second, and when the sound goes away, the receiver goes back to listening to the analog jacks. :)

On my Sony in the bedroom there is a menu option to force listening to only the optical input, fixing this type of problem. See if they kept that option for yours. I don't remember what the option was called, but I do remember that it's available settings were, AUTO, DIGITAL, and ANALOG. My Yamaha in the living room stays on whatever input type I told it to go to. Makes it nice when dealing with ill-behaved devices.

Why is this also the PS3's fault? Well behaved devices spit out a silent digital signal to keep the receiving end synced up. The PS3 is only kicking on it's output when there is sound, but then shutting the output back down when there is nothing to play. Makes it a pain in the ass for the end user.

Got ya, thanks. There was an option to force optical input on my Sony str-de995 but it did not help. Oh well.

That's odd, because the Sony in the bedroom is the STR-DE885. A year older, and one step down. You'd think the 995 would be able to do the same forced lock.
