Yeah G4 is going the way of MTV. No matter how cool or different a station is, as it grows it will inevitably conform.

i used to actually like AOTS when it was good, but now it just sucks.still looking foward to the E3 coverage this year though.

Thats why I enjoy my DVR when watching AOTS. I can skip right to the feed and any other game related information and delete.

Rarely seem to show gaming stuff when I check, but sometimes. It's either some Japanese funky obstacle game show (entertaining sometimes), Bad Boys other other stuff. Sometime they have some weird NES graphic drama show, do people actually want to watch that??

IMHO G4 has sucked it's entire existence. TechTV ftw!

TechTv was better, but Ninja Warrior & Unbeatable Banzuke is awesome. Makes the current American Gladiators show look pathetic.

Xplay is a lot better now that it was. DVR is a good thing when it comes to G4.

I don't know how you could even compare AOTS to TSS. That's kinda like comparing orange soda to pepsi. I guess you could do it, but why?

G4 now is pretty good, imo. It's vastly improved over last year, especially so in the main programs, X-Play and AOTS. They've finally figured out a cohesive vision for their network and are really hitting that demographic, instead of being the mix-and-match that was left after the G4/TechTV merger.

The two pre-merger stations, G4 and TechTV/ZDTV, succeed because they catered to a very narrow range of interest and built a following around that. The gave regular viewers the sense of belonging to a larger group, of being either of "gamer" or "geek" tribe respectively. The attraction to those channels is no different to the attraction to our own AVS forum, or any other highly specialized subgroup. Though, to be fair, a good portion of TechTV was much more general interest (consider the daytime program Call For Help as opposed to the highly technical primetime show, The Screen Savers).

Now, there's an inherent problem with those types of channels. The viewership gains its own identity in time, and from that point on, they are free to reject you if you try to change the formula (when you need to increase viewership or whatever). The content must be consistent with the formed identity, or it will be seen as a betrayal of the group.

And this was the story of G4 and TechTV. The premise that these two stations would have formed synergy was a fatal misunderstanding of how and why these networks managed to capture their viewership in the first place. The ruins of the ill-thought out merger can be seen today, as the OP in this very thread.

Such is the human condition; may it be respected, even if it will never fully understood.

Post-merger G4 had to face an ultimatum; become generic or die. It no longer had a niche, and was in no position to built its own. G4 today has finally completed a transition, and very much for the better, imo. It is in the era of mass-appeal, focus-group tested television. The words of zetram are enlightened, "No matter how cool or different a station is, as it grows it will inevitably conform".

I've never really given it a chance, just assumed it was some kind of soap opera but done with NES graphics from the snippets I've caught. I guess I'll give it a fair shot.

Honestly there isn't much on tv now that I watch anyways. Seems like shows were better when I was younger, A Team, Airwolf, McGuyver, Transformers, Robotech, GI Joe, Old Style cartoons, Cheers (got to love Woody :D) , Knight Rider, Star Trek: NG plus the old school ones with Kirk, Spok and the crew were on.

I heard from a good friend that G4 is suppose to be bringing back some of the game shows. So maybe it is true, Ninja warrior and unbeatable banzuke are fun like once a week not 5 hours a week like they want to play them. And anyshow 2.0 where 2/3 of the screen is 13 year old spam chat is bad.

I don't "hate" G4 like you do. I normally watch AoTS a few times a week and Xplay once in awhile. I really like Kevin and Olivia.

What I don't like is all the crappy filler that they show on the network. i.e. Cops, Cheaters, Ninja Warrior, etc.

Anyway... I am PSYCHED that they are doing a G4 rewind (http://www.g4tv.com/rewind/)! I miss the old shows like Portal, Cinematech, g4tv.com and Judgement Day.

I love Ninja Warrior. My 5 year old son even knows the names of the Ninja Warrior all stars. :) I love the camaraderie that has developed between the regulars on the show. They aren't competing against each other, they are competing against the course. It is a great show. I'm glad that G4 brings it here.

About 95% of the time when I check it out (its right next to Comedy Central) they are playing one damn ninja show or another.

G4 is horrible, but I did not have the channel until last year so I know of no other.

Good point. I don't expect to like every show on any channel. I like Ninja Warrior and Banzuki quite a bit, but I don't care for Cops and Cheaters. I also do like X-Play and AOTS, but Cheat is rather boring as it talks about too many games I don't play.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I prefer they don't only do gaming. My interests are more on technology type stuff than strictly focused on gaming. So, I enjoy how AOTS covers more than just gaming stuff. X-Play is a great gaming show, when I want to watch that kind of thing.

I think AVS could put together a nice TV channel about AV Science and gaming.

Exactly, I think they have contracted the same disease as SciFi get rid of good shows despite good ratings apply a generous helping of reruns (and in SciFi's case crappy original "movies") and hope one or two decent shows are enough to keep $$$ coming in with minimal costs.
