View Full Version : UK sub bass frequency waterfall graphs.
JBLsound4645 06-03-08, 07:36 AM Here is something that I’ve been playing on and off over the years and it’s never failed to once impress me with its huge deep depth over the single 18” JBL 4645.
With the “A Touch of Surround Madness” track 5 with its assorted range of lows as well as a, variety of directional sounds that have a fair amount low end within each channel. It’s a perfect way to see what the sound system can do at best of reproducing soundtrack to the best of its abilities. Sure there will always be a few compromises with each and sound system, to what it can do and what it can’t do within its technical tolerance levels.
Effectiveness of the frequency response range is a little frightening at first! Because you reach for the volume and (purse the playing) and restart with the volume at lesser level as the sub bass driver is really moving on the lower end.
I few subs of he same name and calibre should produce HUGE level but its not about having it at unnatural levels, sure the lower lows within the infrasonic range need a lot of sub to make up and bit of equalization room acoustics and several electronic crossovers to customize the system.
The top frequency waterfall graph shows the second half of the graph recoding, while the bottom is the start of the graph waterfall chart, play this while excising extreme caution.

Holst the planets “Mars the Bringer of War” has been a favourite of mine for years it’s kinder like the imperial March for Star Wars with its fast rhythmic string movement and deep tympani and brass clashing to an earth moving low.

JBLsound4645 06-26-08, 09:27 AM Frequency waterfall graph of John Williams score for Presumed Innocent end credits. Oh, much, much clearer, that’s pucker that is spot on pucker. Sw-re-mix is used has this is only Dolby stereo 4:2:4 mix.

JBLsound4645 06-26-08, 01:47 PM The Black Hole (1979)
I like catching up with classic, six-track Dolby stereo films Disney’s The Black Hole (1979) has more than enough low end support to give you sweaty palms.
This graph is of the LFE.1 only to my memory the LCR has quite a bit of low end rumbling away as well.
I’m going to try an in-room graph chat reading in the daytime and see how well it fairs with the ECM8000 compared with the direct graph readings, from the sub bass output.

JBLsound4645 07-03-08, 02:43 PM K-19 the Widowmaker (2002) chapter 5 “crash depth.” 0: 36m: 51s
I’ve included time, and that will cost you £10.00 pounds, I’m working my a££ off over here.
As Axexei Vostrilkov gives the command for maximum operational depth of the boat, Mikhail Polenin is against these orders fearing it’s an unwilling risk for the boat and its crew. The depth of the low end smoothly builds up in level and frequency depth to give the viewer an approximation. Now I’ve had small drop of water poured into my ear as hearing test many years ago and was told it would simulate the pressure of around 20 or 30Hz and it was quite discomforting while frequency sine wave test was conducted.
Litres of water in buckets placed onto top of ones head and you’ll soon get the general idea of what pressure means, a few tons, forget it.
This was LFE.1 only and even the LCR and S I think have serious low end that can bring the home cinema to clipping depth!

JBLsound4645 07-03-08, 08:31 PM Chapter 3 12m:15s
More less at 15m:17s there is a deep rolling rumble that is produced by Nostromo’s enormous thrust to slow the vehicle down to slow velocity rate, but all goes wrong as the spacecraft lands on rock, that jolts the everything and everyone around for few brief moments.
Most of the low end in the film is fairly mild in terms of hard bass on standard Dolby stereo mix down to LCRS matrix, the LFE.1 when it comes in is fairly impressive and the Kane scene at dinner, you’d think that would have lots of exaggerated low end, it doesn’t, thou its more or less around the 80Hz to 100Hz, I’d have to test that sequence out to see what our, Mr. waterfall can show us.
By the time it got to Aliens (1986) the low end was heavily supported by the LCRS as too was the LFE.1, I kinder get the feeling Ridley Scott isn’t into much LFE.1 Gladiator uses LFE.1 sparingly while its covered deeply by the LCRS, I think most of its down in the 25Hz range with Zimmer’s score.
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk279/SpectrumsubbassLFE13417/AlienLFE1subbass.jpg
As you can see from chapter 10 "last supper" and what mess blood everywhere! The low end was more or less what I could sense it’s within the 100Hz region. I think Kane should have ordered a dodgy curry rather than noodles; at least it would have been explosive!
Readings for this test was done by patching the LCR into the audio mixer and combining all three channels at once.

JBLsound4645 07-05-08, 08:34 PM Apollo 13 dts THX laserdisc
Chapters 12 and 13
I’ve done a few dozen waterfall graph charts though chapters 11 12 and 13. this one shows the bass level in the centre channel as the fuel is being pumped along the manifolds to the Saturn V rocket. As the fuel is being pumped in, it creates a creaking sound that Fred Haise and Jack Swigert react too, as it moves from centre front and mildly on left and right and a bit louder on the split-surrounds, its got some depth also in the LFE.1 for brief moment.
Also some of low end in this brief waterfall is combination of effects and James Horner’s thrilling score.
Screen captures are from first edition region 2 DVD waterfall graphs are from the dts THX laserdisc.
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk279/SpectrumsubbassLFE13417/Apollo13dtsTHXlaserdiscchapter12Apo.jpg
Apollo 13 (1995) the launch
The launch of Apollo 13 is nothing but thunderously loud and the mighty Saturn V climbs gracefully, as she clears the tower and heads outwards over the Atlantic Ocean skywards, while rolling and pitching her course on towards the moon. The LFE.1 is used few moments and with well balanced set-up it should be indistinguishable between the LCRS it shouldn’t draw attention to the LFE.1 when using combinations of subs playing different parts or independent parts of LCRS stacked up front with dedicated LFE.1 array of subs, it should blend in seamlessly.
As it cuts from exterior shots to some of the interior shots the fronts LCR LFE.1 are working quite hard on the dts THX laserdisc in full PCM.
LFE.1 is taken from the dts THX laserdisc while screen captures are from the region 2 first edition DVD.
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk279/SpectrumsubbassLFE13417/Apollo13dtsTHXlaserdiscchapter13lau.jpg
Staging of the first part of Saturn V falls away with “little jolt” that made makes me, chuckle as its fairly hard, when on the edge of the seat, then being knocked back with pleasing surprise, the LFE.1 or even some portions of the low end that supports Apollo 13 is good enough, and its like the saying goes what you see is what you get. If I tested the same sequence from region 2 DVD I would say there is no way its going to beat the dts THX laserdisc PCM range.
It would be interesting to compare with the dts-CD-ROM that interlocks with the 35mm print and get some waterfall graphs from that source for side by side comparison.
As Lovell engages the tower jet to remove the cover from the CM the low end is covered by the centre channel that really jolts or pluses with a shuddering effect, then as it moves clear from the Saturn V it heard on the far left front with thud, while LFE.1 accompanies it.

JBLsound4645 07-05-08, 08:40 PM Daylight (1995) dts THX laserdisc
Don’t blame me if you never owned a laserdisc player there are plenty on eBay it may be the same reason why I don’t what HD-DVD or even Bluray, I’ll buy Bluray when there is good support of film titles and prices are cheap on the SONY Bluray sold here in the UK around £400.00 and ASDA prices for Bluray are around £15.00 to £20.00 which is slightly under what PAL laserdisc sold for in the UK 9 years ago, now then.
The tunnel sequence LFE.1 goes nuts on this pucker dts mix and a hard workout for the JBL 4645 that performs with cinematic loudness as well as depth that completely leaves the room in rubbles of falling debris, okay a slight exaggeration it’s a fair acoustical approximation.
Since I don’t own the film on DVD I don’t see the need to buy the DVD the dts THX laserdisc is enough to wow anyone or even someone who hasn’t seen the film or has but not on dts THX laserdisc.

JBLsound4645 07-05-08, 08:42 PM Opening narration with the ECM8000 and MIC100 connected directly to the computer, and I found most refreshing. I’ll conduct further tests of, this experimentation. ECM8000 was placed 1m away from the LFE.1 sub bass, I’ll try it at the listening position and see how much it drops off by then compare it with the first waterfall graph at 1m.
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk279/SpectrumsubbassLFE13417/WaroftheWorldsLFE11minroomresponceL.jpg
The pulse on the dramatic drum beat at 2m: 27s I can feel a nice sensational feeling in the sofa that fades away, and away as the camera moves into the shipping dock yard.
I also tried standing at the back of the room standing up/ and with my back against the wall and whoa, no wonder it feels like an earthquake in the neighbours flat two floors down, LOL, hey in the daytime I can do what ever I like, in the evening I tone the level down, on to give my ears a break is one thing. The low end just vibrated the wall, now then that’s just one single JBL 4646 sub, one is more than enough for the dedicated LFE.1 channel, in small room.
Taken a reading at the same distance and the level of it is ear popping at from where I was seated at the computer, I turned the level down which passes into the audio mixer LFE.1 and listened to the level from the five primary directional channels and then slowly raised the LFE.1 level up to where its peak output would be and left it there because it had more natural tone without overwhelming the rest of the film mix.

JBLsound4645 07-05-08, 08:43 PM This one kinder pushed the level as well as the frequency up a bit high and the first time I played this in the home, after the pants showing at the Odeon Westover road screen 1 (2002) that didn’t even have one single creditable impact to WOW the audience, it scared the living daylights out of me, (in the home) and I forget which amplifier I was using for the JBL4645 at the time, but not one single issue, just one almighty, tremendous impact on my body, now then.

JBLsound4645 07-08-08, 03:38 PM Here are few moments from a classic Apocalypse Now (1979) version and the (2001) version Redux.
Frequency waterfall response was taken directly from the LFE.1 output only, and seeing its rather early hours there is no flipping way I’m firing up all the subs, as well as taking waterfall graphs of the LCRS there’s plenty on the LFE.1 thou it should be used with a “pinch of slat” otherwise the whole soundtrack will be holy mess of overwhelmed LFE.1 mudding up the rest of the bass and sub bass, it should merely accompany the mix.
Two graphs one is the first edition DVD realised by Paramount Pictures around (2000) on region 2 DVD. Note the difference in the range between the Redux (2001) version and the arc light sequence of B-52 bombings, thundering in the distance with alarming results. This is at the start of chapter 4 on both versions.

JBLsound4645 07-08-08, 05:03 PM Opening moments that wowed the audience as the huge star destroy fills the big screen with thunderous baby boom back in1977 via the 70mm print going though the ages of its evolutionally and controversial Dolby film mix where its fans have mixed views and well we ever see a Road Show 70mm Dolby stereo A type (format 42) version on DVD I think not.

JBLsound4645 07-10-08, 04:49 PM http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk123/IndianaJones34/RamboDVDcollcetionboxset.jpg
Finally a slightly better RAMBO DVD collection as arrived on region 2 shores in the bloodiest and brutal forum that standard DVD can do best, although there is just one snag?
Region 2 owners please note: that “Rambo III” (1988) isn’t in Dolby six-track 5.1 it’s the same realise version as the (2005) edition. I’ve spoken to the technical department at, Studio Cann, UK, and they said they’ll look into the issue as this disc shouldn’t have been in the package and thou it has the same DVD menus, only the artwork of the DVD itself gives the impression its newer version with Dolby 5.1.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk123/IndianaJones34/FirstBloodchapter11theoutpostLCRSsu.jpg
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk123/IndianaJones34/RambofirstbloodpartIILFE1andLCRSsub.jpg
When “Rambo First Blood part 2” (1985) was realised around late (1985) on VHS PAL and unaware at the time because it was years later until I brought a Dolby Pro-Logic decoder only, to discover it had very bad phase error on one of the Lt Rt tracks that cursed chronic crosstalk from centre to left and right fronts and matrix surround. The issue was also on the first DVD edition and I have no doubt it was on the laserdisc editions as well?
The newer version doesn’t suffer from this, thou it does seem fake, its not what I would call a true six-track Dolby 5.1 mix as there is still mild dialogue on the monaural surrounds, same with First Blood I would say the same issue exists on the Bluray, so prick up those ears!
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk123/IndianaJones34/RamboLCRSsubbassHelicopterexplosion.jpg
Must say I wasn’t really keen on the graphic violence in “Rambo” (2008) I wouldn’t be surprised if the BBFC cut a few scenes as this was really “over the top” earlier versions of “Rambo III” (1988) on VHS PAL was cut by the BBFC but that was different time the version presented has all the little trimmings that where cut in the first edition DVD that oddly found its way in this box-set, only the wrong version for Dolby 5.1 mix?
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk123/IndianaJones34/JohnRambochapter25LFE1DVD1.jpg
I was also surprised that my JBL control 5 and 1 arrays didn’t sweat with bloody onslaught from Rambo as it was “Just Blood Loud” JBL. Foley effects where nicely edited, the score was a bit disappointing as Jerry Goldsmith, is no longer here. Brian Tyler may take some time to get used to like most new composers, I’ve heard his scores in a few other films like “Constantine” (2005) and “Darkness Falls” (2003), the end credits is close to getting into the Guinness book of records, for longest end credits score topping in at [10 minutes 50 seconds] from the moment John Rambo, takes a look at the road behind him.
JBLsound4645 07-10-08, 05:54 PM Received a replacement DVD for the lost "Rambo III" (1988) 6 days ago, that was mistakenly packaged into the region 2, (Ultimate Rambo 4 disc collection box-set) and I must say it’s a better sounding version in full six-track Dolby stereo discrete.
Leading up to the dramatic sequence with (Rambo and arrow VS Russian helicopter) and nice touch on the Jerry Goldsmith, score with mild percussion horns beating away, while helicopters fly around looking for Rambo and Trautman, just at the last moment the sound of the arrows stings plucked, as its realised off to the screen-right, then impacting into helicopter with devastating explosion, that showers outwards.
Centre channel carries Foley effects as Rambo, quickly assembles the arrow together, some parts of the music is comes though thou, its playing mostly on the left and right fronts and split-surrounds. All the little details are accurately heard including Russian, dialogue right up to the point where the younger Russian pilot sees Rambo aiming something at him, only its too late to manoeuvre out of its path.
Split-surrounds have a few individual flybys only on this scene its used sparingly, the score is cool when listening to only the surrounds, while LCR sub bass are muted. The helicopter has mild thunder reverb as the music fades away.
LFE.1 produced a wonderful slam of depth as the helicopters debris fall to the ground.

JBLsound4645 07-10-08, 07:16 PM Brought Jumper week before last thou I’ve only gotten around to watching the film this later afternoon and was genuinely trilled with the story and onscreen, the style of the ending with John Powell’s score kinder reminded of “The The Bourne Identity” a fast paced percussion of strings and brass, wonderful.

Cloverfield Overture to the end credits LFE.1 only I could have monitored the LCRS sub bass but you’ll have to pay me to do that because this film is so pants and only the Skywalker Sound and end credits rules.
Score doesn’t really start to around -9m.38s chapter 16 or 78m.33s when you hear the deep tympani, with 30Hz and 40Hz beating away, sounds like a piano then the drums and horns and strings start coming in with flute, harps, even a solo voice is heard, sounds like opera.
I’ve watched the end credits to this film more than most of all the top hardcore members on this site and I’ve really lost count now, its got to be at least 100 times, I end up playing the opening with that LFE.1 and then playing a few moments from the middle then skipping to the monster having feast on the helicopter, until it ditches and then I go to the end credits, because this film is pants I can’t stand the camera work its pants.

ABC&D testing of the region 2 DVD and PAL laserdisc
First I switched the DRC dynamic range compressor to ON mode, on the Kenwood KRF-X9050D THX select and set the level where Kilmer’s character John Patterson says, “I’m going to sort it out” while firing of single round then reloading the rife then firing off a second shot in vengeful anger.
I set the SPL db level metre up and selected A weighting I wasn’t interested in C weighting, I set the level on the Kenwood for appropriate level to read a simple 70dbA in (dynamic range compression) mode.

Raymond Leggs 07-12-08, 08:20 PM Now its time for some B-movies, wheather theyre good or not it doesnt matter its about the bass! :D
Target of Oppertunity, the opening sequence in the compound. :D
Subzero (2005) I think the mixer of the 2.0/2.1 mix (that's the only one) went way too far with the LFE, the sub is always making some kind of rumbling and booming. :D
Someone Please do octopus (2000) :p I thard about the extensive use of surrounds towards the end of the movie where the octopus eats everybody up.
The Silencers (1996) its only 2.0 but the LFE is Definately overkill for such a low budget action thriller
JBLsound4645 07-12-08, 08:27 PM The continuity of the waterfalls is bit out of sequence I’ve been working hard on these and some 2010 ones with some air-breaking coming later on. What’s more the tone and rumble on the JBL4645 is pucker a nice operatic feeling. I was going to do The Abyss last Sunday but got so tired up with the images and deciding on what waterfalls I should show as the lows didn’t reach down as far as I thought they would, but it still vibrates the sofa .

lfe man 07-13-08, 01:50 PM I think you’re referring to the sequence where Ellie travels though the “wormhole”. Working on it and its still an exciting moment, from the first waterfall frequency graph lows aren’t that low as you might think.
Should be posted in the next 2 hours less it depends on how hard I work at it.

JBLsound4645 07-13-08, 03:21 PM The opening has muffled musical sound that’s hard to localize within the walls of (Folsome prison) where inmates are attending a “Johnny Cash” concert. As the camera goes pass all the cells and nearer and nearer to the beating of hundreds and hundreds of clapping and feet pounding on the floors with an almost deep pulse rumbling.
Left and right have deep low end
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk279/SpectrumsubbassLFE13417/WalktheLineleftandrightsummedsubbas.jpg
Centre channel is just a bit deeper than the main left and right
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk279/SpectrumsubbassLFE13417/WalktheLinecentrechannelsubbassDVD2.jpg
Split-surrounds far less pulse beating
http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk279/SpectrumsubbassLFE13417/walktheLinesurroundssummedsubbassDV.jpg
LFE.1 really takes control from the opening to demonstrate what good sub bass can do with an all most thunderous deep pounding that rumbles with slam and depth pulse, of the inside walls of (Folsome prison) where “Johnny Cash” is performing live to the inmates.

I would have done the destruction sequence at Cape Kennedy. As that sounded wicked with first laserdisc I had many years ago then brought the DVD as my Pioneer CLD-1750 and CLD-2950 don’t support Dolby AC-3 nor was I interested in sending them off for modification so I brought the DVD to play on my first Dolby digital processor which was a Cambardge Audio processor a nice looking small beast.
yeah that's a great scene also
looks like my trusty old Pioneer CLD-D704 laserdisc player finally gave out and it had the AC3 output

Hmm, have you tried many laserdiscs or one of the same just flip the disc to the other side and try the start-up? Seems like the, spindle motor has cowed up on you. It’s easy to replace if it is the spindle motor and all depends if spindle motor is in stock at warehouse. If it is the spindle motor, then again it could be something other.
But I’ve experienced two cases with my laserdisc players and replaced both spindle motors, although I need another part for the CLD-2950 which is in the bedroom at present unused. The CLD-1750 is the oldest and still in current use from time to time.
Sometimes the disc isn’t recognized but, I flip the disc over and press play and it starts running then, I stop play flip the disc back over and press play, its strange ole player now but at least she’s still working she just has attitude that’s all.
thanks i'll have to give it a try
i have a few laserdiscs that sound much better than the dvd version
my Nightmare Before Christmas DTS laserdisc is definitely one of them

JBLsound4645 07-17-08, 04:47 AM When I watched the extras on DVD disc 6 Bonus, several years ago I was wondering what the actual frequency response of the playback at the Zanuck theatre? What type of subs where used and what was SPL db level?
This is the [Fox Zanuck Theatre] link for today and I can’t find any other technical details about it, other than what I see in the link.

The discrete LCRS sounds very good on this film for its age that comes out crystal clear good strong dialogue intelligibility and sound effects put to good use for the story. Cheek it out for its good visuals at the end that is one mighty large piece of art that god as made, breath taking.
For the frequency graph I used sw-re-mix on my Kenwood KRF-X9050D THX select since its only Dolby stereo 4.0 it needs some sub bass extension that I send to the JBL 4645 instead of the Eltax A 12-R that I use for six-track Dolby stereo digital or dts films.
The use of the monaural discrete surrounds on the end credits is played at lower level over LCR thou there are way to heighten it without it getting too out of hand when loud moments come. The harmony of choir voices washes over me uniformity spiritual feeling in the room as well as smooth panning of sound effects and musical instruments that the JBL control 1 handle easily.
Look out for the THX logo on the end that’s something very rare that you don’t see today on the end credits. I could only imagine how this would have sounded at the CIC UCI High Wycombe in THX because that cinema had one of the evil wickedest lows second to the Empire Leicester Square. Only two JBL 4645 wow I’m impressed!

Chapter 10 where Charles and Eric go to Jean’s home in an attempt to control the deadly power that she now possess all goes terribly wrong. Awesome sound moment that pushes the limits of home entertainment plenty of bass in the LCRS while LFE.1 “boom channel” goes deeper and deeper as well as higher in range. This shows that Jeans power is bigger than Charles and Eric’s combined.
Its sounds like a HUGE amount of air turbulence rushing around as objects are suspended at the will of Jean’s mind.
43 minutes 53 seconds onwards to 47 minutes 47 seconds
As everything starts to calm down while slowly coming to stand still with objects freely suspended at 47 minutes 08 seconds with mild shuddering low then KABOOM Charles is gone with the house finally slamming down back onto the ground!

JBLsound4645 11-13-08, 10:22 PM I’ll start off with “Amazing Life” (THX introduction trailer) that I first heard at the Empire Leicester Square in THX on Friday August 1st The X-Files I want to Believe and it was quite stunning sat front and centre it dwarfed around with sonic pure deep pulse that reached quite high on the SPL db metre.
I was quite surprised to see it on the start of Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull it just shock the room door not quite off its hinges just vibrating, LOL looks like I’ve got some diy to sort out.
The surrounds with centre back active enveloped all-around with wonderful harmony.
LFE.1, shuddered the sofa, I was tempted to increasing the level but I didn’t want to overcook it, too many chefs spoil the broth.
More to come…I’m using chapters 1 and 2 to motivate me because of the calm, sound I’m starting to really like this now. LOL
Thinking about it £7.98p is cheaper than going to the cinema I mean the amount of times, I get to listen over and over to favourite part would mean you’d have to pay again to see it.:p

JBLsound4645 11-13-08, 10:24 PM (Rocket car sled) looks like trilling ride, chapter 3, 16 minutes 07 seconds, sounds cool as it passes by a herd of chipmunks, along the fronts LCR while thundering over the valley on the surrounds and then passing around on the surrounds.
The LFE.1 propels the rocket sled ride until finally coming to full stop thank god!:D

JBLsound4645 11-27-08, 06:26 AM Not one single gunshot is fired in The X-Files thou cast is walking around with them pointing them no gunshot low end recoil to be felt.
The film does have a few interesting car crashes and nice chase on foot that had some nice deep low end.
When the stalker runs a car off the snowy road with his snowplough to get another victim for spare parts? The crash is very loud and yet very brief most of the low end is carried in the centre. Wow this was really cool in the famous Empire Leicester Square just goes to show its mighty powerful JBL THX is yet again untouchable.
The car crash scene had more or less the same sonic cinematic impact on DVD why spend more money for the same thing…

No not even thou they cheap as biscuits I mean cheap at under £190.00 pounds over my first DVD player that cost £450.00 and that was cheap model from SONY that I gave to friend and he swapped his other SONY because it didn’t support six channel out for his Yamaha that he still has only used for centre back now as he has some AVR Kenwood as I’m running.
Soon I’ll buy one soon its not paramount at the moment.
And you know the funny thing I asked for it back same swap and his answer was NO! LOL I just like the other features on the SONY DVP-S535D wow so attached to it.:D
JBLsound4645 01-23-09, 02:57 PM I forget to look at the German, Italian, French and Spanish, 5.1 language versions might be of interest. I’ll do them as and when I’m ready, same sequence.
JBLsound4645 01-26-09, 06:58 AM The visual effects by John Dykstra’s Star Wars Star Trek the motion picture Firefox Apogee group was rather groundbreaking at the time of the realise of (Lifeforce 1985). I knew there was two version of the film before I brought the DVD as it was aired on TV late or early 1990’s and the sound sucked on the extended version.
Bass seemed heavier on the theatrical cut and bit lower as well, thou the only to tell is if I fire-up VHS PAL player and look for the Dolby stereo theatrical cut.
MGM/UA could have least placed two versions of the film in this single DVD. Version here is six-track Dolby stereo 70mm.
I’ll try a few more later on but in the meantime. It would be far less terrifying. But that’s not important now.:D

JBLsound4645 01-26-09, 02:04 PM dts “A Touch of Surround Madness” track 5 with its assorted range of lows as well as a, variety of directional sounds that have a fair amount low end within each channel. It’s a perfect way to see what the sound system can do at best of reproducing soundtrack to the best of its abilities. Sure there will always be a few compromises with each and sound system, to what it can do and what it can’t do within its technical tolerance levels.

Funny you should mention on the high side as I’ve been doing some experimentation last Saturday with different angle of approach. Monitoring the LFE.1 from (The Goonies 1985) I had the LFE.1 output as normal with the lead patched into the mixer and the pan pot set as central to send it out though another output so I can look at the strength of the signal as it seems too high for bump on the head? There are other effects like playing the skeleton bones where another entrance opens up with rumble quake like sound.
(The Goonies 1985) chapter 15, at 44 minutes 18 seconds Jake Fratelli (Robert Davi) bumping his head on the low ceiling in the basement that peaked at high level for bump!

I’ve also been monitoring Apollo 13 as the two vehicles dock talk back barber pole, [clunk, clunk, clunk BANG!] It peaks quite high and needed smoothing out and retesting while running the launch sequence over and over and it looked good on the RA300 barograph and sounded okay no issues.
LFE.1 only comes in during certain parts of the launch LCRS is mostly active but with levels balanced, I’ll notice it when switching LFE.1 channel off during staging and adding back in adds onto the other parts with bit more slam or rumble or kick depending on what those re-recoding mixers had in mind?
JBLsound4645 02-05-09, 04:14 PM The 70mm six-track Dolby stereo was nominated with an Academy Award® for best sound achievement and its not a bad contender as it packs a wallop!
The missile cylo sequence has good ample supply of low end support over LCRS while LFE.1 adds a little back-up support that would have you ducking for cover under the table!
The surrounds in some parts only carry sound effects while music and some of the other deeper portions of the effects remain up front. When it’s called upon for music to start playing dramatically in the surrounds it fades in.
The baby boom/track aka LFE.1 is used sparingly and affective. The door closing wasn’t as loud as I thought it to be. The bombs dropping
