I have no idea how to search for this, so I apologize if this is answered.

My inlaws have problems listening to their DVD player through their TV because I believe the dynamic range is too great...e.g., they turn the volume way up to hear the speaking parts...typically quieter, but then the action or louder portions are crazy loud to them.

Is there a player or addon device that could compress this dynamic range to a more listenable level for them? I recall hearing of this (no pun intended) in the past...but I do not recall if it was a receiver function or...?

edit: I saw this potentially called "DRC" or dynamic range compression?

thx, appreciate any help.

Your inlaw's DVD player should have a setting for DRC in the setup menu. If not, you may have better luck getting them a DVD player that has this feature than a standalone unit that does DRC.

Many receivers support DRC as well. They often call this "night mode"

Late Night Mode (High, low, off)- adjusts the dynamic range by making thunderous explosions more neighborhood friendly, and boosting hard to hear whispered dialogue

It depends on the system they've got, and the price point for fixing the problem.
